There are two men named James whom the Cleveland Cavaliers need to factor into their decision-making. One is James Harden, who has a player option for the 2026-27 season. The other is LeBron James, who could be coming back for another reunion.

The deadline for Harden to decide on his player option is fast approaching. Most people expect him to decline that player option and renegotiate a longer deal to remain in Cleveland.

By declining that option, he'll be leaving over $42 million on the table. Instead, he can lock in a longer-term deal.

Per NBA Insiders Jake Fischer and Marc Stein, that's exactly what's going to happen between Harden and the Cavs soon. They did not give specifics on how long and how much Harden's new contract will be, but those details should become available soon.

By opting for a longer deal, Harden is likely taking less money to remain in Cleveland. This decision actually puts him and the Cavs in a win-win scenario.

The Cavs duck below the second apron, which gives them more flexibility in making roster moves. This, in turn, puts the team in a better position to compete for an NBA Title.

A championship has remained elusive to Harden so far. He's won nearly every award the league has, but he hasn't even reached the NBA Finals since 2012.

By locking in the James Harden and Donovan Mitchell backcourt duo, the Cavs might also be putting themselves in a better position to entice LeBron James to come back.

Is LeBron James Coming Back to Cleveland?

There are plenty of rumors swirling around LeBron James and his future as the league approaches the free agency period. There are reportedly around a dozen teams interested in negotiating a deal with him.

Before those teams can actually talk numbers with him, though, he needs to make an important announcement: Is he retiring or coming back for another season?

Once he makes that announcement, teams will need to wait and see whether he chooses to remain with the Los Angeles Lakers. If not, then everyone who wants a shot at signing him has a chance to negotiate.

One team rumored to be at the forefront if he chooses to remain in the league is the Cleveland Cavaliers.

LeBron is a native of Ohio, and his professional career began in Cleveland. Coming back to the franchise that drafted him would be a storybook ending to a legendary career.

If he ends up winning a title there, then it becomes the type of swan song narrative that sports fans love.

There are two ways that James can return to Cleveland. He can, as a free agent, choose to directly negotiate with the Cavs' front office. In this scenario, he will get a much smaller contract than he's worth.

The other is to tell LA he wants to return to Cleveland, and the two teams can engage in a sign-and-trade deal. James gets the money, but the Cavs lose significant assets.

In the first scenario, he gets less money, but the team remains extremely competitive, giving him a much better shot at winning another title.

In the second, he gets paid accordingly, but the Cavs lose some of their competitive edge.
