While everyone's attention was initially on the Miami Heat after they traded for Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Minnesota Timberwolves and Charlotte Hornets have made some big moves. As of June 25, LaMelo Ball has been traded to the Timberwolves. The Hornets traded Ball and Josh Green for the Wolves' Naz Reid and several draft picks.
LaMelo's father, LaVar Ball, was ecstatic to learn that his youngest son was traded to Minnesota. However, LaVar went on social media to ask the Timberwolves to sign LaMelo's older brothers, Lonzo and Gelo.
"Minnesota Timberwolves, y'all did the coldest move in the game," LaVar said. "You went and got that Melo. But here's the thing. Let me give you the recipe. You got to get the other two Ball boys. You get the other two Ball boys, it will be the most-watched team ever in the NBA, trust me when I tell you."
"Melo can win by himself, but I'll tell you, with his brothers, I guarantee y'all a championship," LaVar added. "Together, you can't beat them. ... You can get Lonzo damn near for nothing. You can get Gelo damn near for nothing. ... Whenever them Ball boys together, can't lose."
Lonzo Ball is currently an unrestricted free agent. His salary is projected to cost around $10 million per year. However, the Timberwolves currently have a negative cap space. This might prove to be a tricky situation for Minnesota if they ever consider LaVar's suggestion.
Meanwhile, LiAngelo Ball is currently pursuing his career in music under the stage name 'GELO'. While Gelo expressed his interest in making his return to the NBA, it might be difficult for him to secure a spot in the league, especially since his previous stints weren't as prominent as his brothers' careers.
NBA Insider Explains Why the Hornets Traded LaMelo Ball
LaMelo Ball trade was a move few expected. Since Ball's arrival in 2020, he singlehandedly put the Hornets back on the map. However, Ball never truly elevated the team into playoff contenders, which is exactly what NBA insider Zach Lowe pointed out on his podcast.
Lowe said that the reason the Hornets would abruptly trade their biggest star in years could be because his style of play never led them to the postseason.
"I think it really comes down to a physical toughness question that they have about LaMelo Ball," Lowe said.
"What are you gonna do in Game 5 of a playoff series when Stephon Castle has been in your jersey for five straight games? When you're switching between Jalen Williams and Kason Wallace and Alex Caruso bumping you, physically just manhandling you up and down the court? Are you actually game for that?"
"The Hornets know the numbers. They know their offense wasn't good when LaMelo was on the bench. They know all of that stuff, and they decided anyway, 'We just don't think we can win the biggest games with this guy on our team.'"
Meanwhile, LaMelo playing next to Anthony Edwards is something many are looking forward to. Melo and Ant are two of the brightest stars in the league, whose personalities also match. This could translate to how they gel together on the hardwood.
Now that Ball is playing for a contending team, we could see a more focused version of him with the Timberwolves next season.
