The Boston Celtics' front office remains willing to let Jaylen Brown go even after missing out on Giannis Antetokounmpo. However, after missing out on acquiring the two-time league MVP, their asking price appears to have gotten steeper.
Originally, reports stated that they were okay with surrendering picks along with Brown. Now, though, they are reportedly the ones demanding multiple draft assets in return for the 2024 NBA Finals MVP.
According to ESPN Insider Shams Charania, the Celtics' front office has asked for at least four first-round picks. The way Charania framed it, though, is that demand is not similar across the teams they've had conversations with.
The number of picks they want in exchange might depend on which players they get back in a deal. If a particular team can offer multiple win-now pieces or a high-profile All-Star-caliber player, the number of picks they want might be less.
Considering that Jaylen Brown just had his best season yet, averaging a career-high 28.7 points and 5.1 assists, one can see why that asking price remains high.
If Boston is asking for a package consisting of players and picks, though, they might also be thinking of what their future looks like.
They are expected to remain competitive, especially once Jayson Tatum returns and is fully healthy. At the same time, they could simply be looking to add young assets that will develop during a time when the team is legitimately contending.
Tatum, of course, has remained quiet through all this. He has not commented on potentially acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo when he was available.
He also has not said anything about his running mate being apparently on the trading block.
Jayson Tatum Gets Called Out For Remaining Silent Amidst Jaylen Brown Trade Talks
The Boston Celtics just suffered a major blow to their squad's chemistry. Right now, one can only imagine how Jaylen Brown feels about being at the center of the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade talks.
By including him in the package alongside picks, the Celtics front office might have made an admission that they view Antetokounmpo as the better player.
Of course, they won't say that out loud to anyone. In fact, they've done the opposite, with team President Brad Stevens stating that Brown is a valuable member of the team.
Now that Stevens has issued a statement, Jayson Tatum is being urged to do the same. Not by the team, but by ESPN's Seth Greenberg.
Greenberg said on 'Get Up' that it is now Tatum's turn to stand up for his teammate.
"The only person that hasn't talked during this whole scenario, has been Jayson Tatum," the ESPN analyst said. "Jayson Tatum needs to step up and say, 'that's my dude.'"
Tatum and Brown have already shown that together, they can lead a well-curated roster to a championship. They might have even been in a position to compete for multiple titles in a row, had Tatum not gotten injured.
Now, their chance of winning multiple titles together is being threatened by a looking trade.
