Brian Windhorst Sends Warning to 3 Teams About Signing LeBron James: "They Better Have a Very Compelling Roster"

There's a new arms race emerging in the NBA, and this time, it's for LeBron James. The King announced earlier this week that he won't return to the Los Angeles Lakers for the 2026-27 season, putting front offices around the league on alert. As an unrestricted free agent, almost any team can give him a call and pitch the idea of joining its organization next season. However, that doesn't mean every team has an equal chance of landing him.

This isn't because of financial constraints, but because, at this stage of his career, the 41-year-old star needs to be on a team capable of making a deep postseason run. The last time he won a title was in 2020, and he would love to retire with a ring on every finger.

Insider Brian Windhorst said on 'First Take' that whichever team takes James doesn't have to worry about finances. That's because he claims that James is willing to sign as much as the $15 million non-taxpayer mid-level exception, or even the minimum contract.

"So that means if you're gonna get him at incredible value, your team better damn well be set and ready to go," Windhorst said.

He then added that James is not necessarily looking to sign with a top contender. After that, he issued a message to the top teams linked to James: the Warriors, the Cavaliers, and the Heat.

"The mandate for the Warriors, the [Cavaliers], and the Heat is when they come to him, they better have a very compelling roster," Windhorst said. "And I do think we can have a team or two emerge that we don't maybe expect."

Typically, when a star of this caliber becomes available, teams don't have the luxury of time. Pursuing that superstar is the top priority, and building around him comes after.

With James, that appears to be flipped. He wants to join a squad that's poised for a deep postseason run, and he's in no rush to make a decision. Money also doesn't seem to be a motivating factor for him at this stage as he prepares for Year 24 in the league.

With that in mind, teams hoping to sign him can instead focus on building the strongest possible supporting cast. And for some franchises, time is of the essence.

The Golden State Warriors’ Window to Sign LeBron James Might Be Closing

This summer, the league is closer than ever to seeing LeBron James and Stephen Curry on the same team. But even so, there's still no guarantee it will happen.

Initially, reports claimed that they could lure the 41-year-old star by trading for Anthony Davis. However, the Washington Wizards are reportedly uninterested in taking forward Jimmy Butler (who will be out with an ACL injury until late 2026 or early 2027) from the Warriors.

This means Golden State's front office will need to find another team that'll serve as a facilitator for such a deal. If they spend too much time on that, their window to acquire James might slam shut completely.

Meanwhile, other teams being linked to James already have a compelling roster without having to make major moves this summer.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have a strong core with Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen. With the four of them together, Cleveland has enough talent and star power to be a playoff squad.

The Miami Heat, even after losing Tyler Herro and Norman Powell, still have a star duo in Bam Adebayo and two-time league MVP and 2021 champion Giannis Antetokounmpo. They also just retained Andrew Wiggins and added Tim Hardaway Jr.

In terms of the LeBron James arms race, the Warriors are already starting on their back foot. But that doesn't mean they're completely out of the race just yet. James and Curry have both said they'd love to link up one day. And that alone could be a motivation for James.

For now, this arms race continues. But in the days and weeks to come, conversations surrounding James' future won't die down. If anything, they'll only intensify.
