For NBA fans, the idea of watching LeBron James and Stephen Curry team up was simply unfathomable a few years ago. But now, with James set to change teams ahead of his 26th season, that possibility is as close to becoming reality as it may ever get. Two of the greatest players of their generation could join forces with the Golden State Warriors. But as far as Paul Pierce is concerned, it would be nothing more than a show if it happens at all.

"When I think about the Warriors, I cringe a little bit," Pierce said on the No Fouls Given podcast. Understandably, this statement prompted one of his co-hosts to ask why.

"Because now, it's just like, man, come on. How many, like, hall-of-fame superstars you want to team up with?" Pierce replied.

"It starts to turn into, like, a spectacle. You know, it starts to turn into that, because you guys aren't going to win, but you guys are two of the biggest superstars the NBA's ever had."

Later, Pierce admitted that, as a fan, he'd want to watch James and Curry play together. However, he also said it would be for entertainment value, not because they'll be playing winning basketball.

Together, Curry and James can still lead a team to plenty of wins over the course of a season. Both looked elite during the 2025-26 campaign. But can they really lead the Warriors to a championship? Curry is already 38 and played only 43 games last season due to injuries.

James will turn 42 in December, and while he remains a threat to score, make plays, and control the tempo of a game, he no longer has the same explosiveness he once did.

Plus, the Warriors don't really have any other star who can play the protagonist role. There's Draymond Green, of course. But he, too, is 36. And although he remains one of the most impactful players in the league defensively, he doesn't have too much of an impact on the box score. At least, not as much as he used to in his prime.

The Warriors do have a chance to acquire another star in Anthony Davis, but that might hinge on finding the right trade partner.

The Golden State Warriors' Plans to Acquire Anthony Davis Just Got Harder

Even before LeBron James announced that he would test free agency, rumors began swirling that the Golden State Warriors were targeting another star to lure him in. Anthony Davis, who won a championship with James in 2020, was reportedly in the Warriors' crosshairs.

The problem is that Davis is not a free agent and is under contract with the Washington Wizards. He's in year two of a three-year deal, and while he has a player option for next season, he can't just decide on his next team and go there this summer.

Initially, the Warriors reportedly had a trade package in place that included Jimmy Butler, several first-round picks, and a handful of pick swaps.

Since a trade did not materialize, it's safe to assume that the Wizards were not impressed by this package. Now, conflicting reports have emerged on this front.

Insider Marc J. Spears reported that the Wizards front office is not listening to any offers for Davis. He has not played a single game for them yet, but Washington has a solid core led by guard Trae Young, who said that they are not willing to break up just yet.

Meanwhile, Sam Amico of 'HoopsWire' posted on X that Washington will trade Davis, but not for Butler. This means the Warriors' front office needs to find other teams to help facilitate the deal.

If Golden State does acquire Davis, they might finally have the star power to make a much deeper run in the postseason next year, after their play-in loss in 2026. They'll only need to find the depth required to sustain a deep run, and possibly compete for a title.
