Shai Gilgeous-Alexander downplays big win over Spurs: “Tonight wasn’t our super bowl”
After the Oklahoma City Thunder finally beat the San Antonio Spurs for the first time this season, reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander offered a candid take on the victory, emphasizing that it’s just one game in a long season.
Gilgeous-Alexander scored 34 points, grabbed five rebounds, dished five assists and blocked four shots to lead OKC’s 119-98 win, snapping a three-game skid against the Spurs and handing San Antonio its first loss to Oklahoma City this year.
Despite the significance of breaking through against a team that had dominated them, SGA was quick to temper the moment. In a postgame interview, he said simply:
“Tonight wasn’t our Super Bowl. It wasn’t anything else but another game in an 82-game season.” He added that while the team felt good about the win and the way they competed, they still need to keep improving and stay focused on the bigger goals ahead.
Gilgeous-Alexander also highlighted how improved defense and growth from past matchups helped the Thunder finally get the upper hand. He noted that previous losses showed areas the team needed to work on – and that beating the Spurs wasn’t treated as an endpoint but a step forward in a long campaign.
