What Is a Trade Kicker? New Details From LeBron James’ 76ers Signing Emerge as It Turns Official

As of Sunday, LeBron James is officially a part of the Philadelphia 76ers. James shocked the world on Friday when he announced that he was joining the 76ers. While Philly was part of the top five teams on LeBron's list, it was still a curveball to many.

NBA insider Sham Charania reported on X that James signed a two-year deal worth $8 million with the Sixers on Sunday, including a player option. Charania also noted that the contract has a 15% trade kicker.

"LeBron James has officially signed his two-year, $8 million contract with the Philadelphia 76ers with a player option -- plus a full 15% trade kicker," Charania wrote on X.

For those unfamiliar, a trade kicker is a special clause in which a player is guaranteed a bonus if he is traded to another team. In the case of James, if the 76ers decide to trade him, he will receive a bonus of 15% of the base salary remaining in his contract.

It's also worth noting that the bonus money will count towards the Sixers' salary cap. This could be used to help match salaries in trade scenarios.

The trade kicker won't apply to James in his second year. This is because his second year is a player option. If LeBron opts in his player option but gets traded during that season, he will no longer receive the 15% bonus of his base salary.

According to NBA rules, teams are not allowed to offer anything beyond 15% for trade kicker clauses.

A player could also waive the bonus in certain trade scenarios if they wish to even out the salaries.

LeBron James Breaks Silence on 76ers Decision

LeBron James is set to form a superteam with the Philadelphia 76ers. His new star teammates include Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey. The addition of James might've sealed the deal for a trip to the 2027 NBA Finals.

Apparently, that's exactly why LeBron chose to go to Philly. He believes that he could win another championship playing with the 76ers. James went on social media to explain his decision.

"I thought I was done when the season ended," James wrote on X. "I wasn't ready to announce it, and I knew I needed some time to really decide, but I was pretty sure I played my last game. I was honest at that last press conference when I said I needed to look at myself and decide if I still love this game. I still truly love this game, and I have more to give."

"The last few weeks have really been special," James continued. "I’ve never been able to have no clue what to do and take real time to just think. I’ve had an incredible few months with all the people I love trying to figure it all out. This is my last decision. I’m not going for money. I’m not going for family. What am I really playing for at this point?"

"I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win, and to have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship. I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team, and I am so excited to energize a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time," James concluded.

While many others wanted to see James go back home to Cleveland or finally team up with Stephen Curry, joining the Sixers makes the most sense. Philly is looking to win it all this coming season.

The trio of Brown, Embiid, and Maxey alone was already quite concerning for other contending teams in the Eastern Conference. But now that James is in the picture, who knows what the four of them can accomplish, especially when healthy.
