While the embers of the Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum feud keep burning despite the 2024 Finals MVP moving to Philly this season, former NBA star Baron Davis just revealed a lead on what may have caused or fueled the “beef” in the first place.
“I saw it in the Finals when Brown was gonna get it,” the former two-time NBA All-Star said, per an X post by NBA Central. “Jayson Tatum kept firing at the end of the last game. Everybody who’s played this game knows the series was wrapped up. They knew Jayson Tatum was trying to get that Finals MVP, man. That went to Jaylen Brown. That hurt that kid, man. That crushed him.”
In the Celtics’ 106-88 Game 5 victory over the Dallas Mavericks in 2024, Tatum’s 22.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 7.2 assists overshadowed Brown’s 20.8 points, 5.4 rebounds and 5.0 assists. But regardless of Brown sharing his honor with his “Partner in crime,” Tatum, the turn of events was, per Davis, “crushed” Tatum.

But even if the two of them managed to keep their feud away from the public eye, Brown’s move to the Philadelphia 76ers has brought matters to light. And, shockingly enough, Celtics analyst Brian Scalabrine stated that the former Celtics star was the one pushing for a trade.
“I think Jaylen Brown lives in his own reality,” Scalabrine shared on SiriusXM NBA radio, per another X post by NBA Central. “But because it wasn’t being documented that he demanded to be traded, then I don’t think that anybody, anybody thinks that he could. Now, he could say that it was Tatum’s fault. Like, he could just make stuff up. But my understanding is Jaylen Brown went to the organization and had a list of demands. And it was like, ‘You either do this, or you trade me.’”
He even specified that it was Milwaukee that Brown was rooting to get into and “called some other teammates” to join him. However, Scalabrine’s claims fell short in front of several other variable, unbiased sources stating otherwise.
As per ESPN’s senior NBA insider Shams Charania, Boston “was full-blown shopping Brown around the league,” and “Brown never requested a trade out of Boston.” ClutchPoints NBA insider and reporter Brett Siegel also weighed in on this, posting, “If Jaylen Brown had requested a trade back in June, that would've been widely reported. And we would've heard about it,” on X on October 27.
But regardless of the truthfulness of either side, Brown undeniably has been keeping the heat on. As Tatum has recently expressed that Brown’s move caught him off guard like everyone else, Brown responded to that with a blue baseball cap emoji, implying that Tatum is lying.
Although Tatum has clarified on having no beef with Brown, Brown retorted about having “little lamb chops and some gravy.”
But so far, Davis’ statement remains unchanged. After all, the MVP award could’ve been the trigger for the drama that keeps going on.
