In his second NBA season, Jalen Suggs went down in the first quarter of a preseason game against the Dallas Mavericks and was later diagnosed with a left knee capsule sprain and bone bruise. That scare came with no timetable, and reports warned that bone bruises "can be tricky." On Sunday night, Suggs hit the floor in Madison Square Garden with the other knee, and the Magic got an answer that is much better than they feared.
Orlando Magic guard Suggs has been diagnosed with a mild bone bruise in his right knee and will be re-evaluated in two weeks, sources tell ESPN's Shams Charania. He avoided any other major structural damage.
The team announced the diagnosis Monday. The two-week window is a re-evaluation date, not a guaranteed return, and Suggs will miss at least that long.
The injury looked serious when it happened. Suggs went up for an easy fast-break layup in the fourth quarter of the Magic's 111-102 win in New York, and his right knee buckled hard. He stayed down for quite some time before limping off, barely putting any weight on the leg.
Coach Sean Sweeney was hopeful that he had just hyperextended the knee, and said Suggs was in good spirits after the game.
The diagnosis was a relief for a team already dealing with injuries. Suggs finished with four points, six rebounds and six assists in the win, which was Orlando's first of the new season. He joins star Paolo Banchero, who suffered a low-grade high ankle sprain in Friday's loss to the Timberwolves and is likely to miss four to six weeks. Losing both players at once will test the Magic's depth early in the year.
The numbers show why his absence matters. The 25-year-old, a former No. 5 overall pick, is in his sixth season and averaged 13.8 points and 5.5 assists per game last year as the Magic reached the playoffs for a third straight year. With Banchero already sidelined, Suggs was expected to carry a bigger share of the ball handling.
His history adds to the concern. Suggs has played just 92 games over the last two seasons, and 2023-24 is the only season in which he has played more than 57 games. In March 2025, he had arthroscopic surgery to remove a cartilage fragment from his left knee, which ended his season.
This latest injury is to his right knee.
The Magic have an incentive to be careful, and their recovery plan will likely depend on how the knee responds to rehab. Two weeks from Monday's diagnosis is around Nov. 9.
The loss is felt most on defense. Losing his defense and energy still leaves the Magic with work to do, especially without Banchero. That puts more pressure on the rest of the guard rotation to handle the toughest perimeter assignments, and it makes this early stretch harder to navigate.
The Magic will take the relief of avoiding a major injury, but the next two weeks will show whether a mild bone bruise stays mild.
