Earlier in March, Stephen Curry turned 38. That means Steph is already in the twilight years of his career. Typically, when NBA players reach a certain age, their playing time begins to decline due to load management. Gone are the days when an older player could accommodate 30+ minutes on a nightly basis in a grueling 82-game season.
Apparently, Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr is aware of Curry's situation and is expected to lower his playing time in the 2026-27 season. Warriors beat writer Danny Emerman shared on X that Kerr has already warned fans about buying tickets. Kerr understands that many Warriors fans buy tickets to see Curry or other veteran players. However, the head coach advised them to check the lineup on certain days first before purchasing a ticket.
"We'll finish off the preseason schedule tomorrow, and then we've got three days of practice," Kerr said in a statement shared by Emerman on X. "There will be those discussions during that time, where we'll start trying to map out week-by-week what's what."
"But, to be really frank, every year we run into this where we have a bunch of games stacked together, back-to-backs, we have fans who buy tickets expecting to see Steph," Kerr added. "People expecting to see vets."
"Then we have a back-to-back, and then we don't play them. I would just come out and tell the fans out there to be mindful when you're buying the tickets of the schedule," Kerr continued.
"Take a look. Because we've got not just Steph, but we've got multiple vets who we are going to try to manage. Because it's the only way we can do this."
Now that we know that Curry and the rest of the older guys on the Warriors roster will be put under load management, Bay Area fans should expect to see a lot more from younger players like Yaxel Lendeborg.
While some may be upset with Kerr's decision to lessen Steph's minutes, the move honestly makes sense. Last season, Curry was limited to 43 games due to runner's knee.
It took quite some time for Steph to recover from his injury, which led to his lengthy absence. Kerr will likely attempt to avoid that situation from happening again as much as possible.
Stephen Curry Shares His Motivation Heading Into the Upcoming Season
Now that Stephen Curry is approaching 40 years old, many are anticipating the day that the Golden State Warriors legend will call it quits and hang up his laces. Honestly speaking, the idea doesn't sound too far-fetched, especially now that the Warriors have been struggling to contend for a title again.
Despite those circumstances, Curry remains motivated to play basketball. In a recent interview with SiriusXM NBA Radio, Steph revealed why he's still playing at this stage in his career. He shared how he still wants to chase after championships despite their rough situation.
"That is why I'm playing. Especially to (win an NBA championship) in the same place that I've been doing it for the last 17 years, I feel like that's the ultimate challenge," Curry said. "Of course, I want to win. You're hoping that you can be in the mix... If we have one more run at it, that would be ideal. That’s what we’re all fully committed to."
Because the Warriors failed to surround Steph with notable pieces who could've helped him achieve his championship aspirations, it'll be interesting to see how he'll make do with his situation in the 2026-27 season.
