LeBron James’ decision to travel between New York and Philadelphia in a Fanatics helicopter has attracted attention across the NBA.

The helicopter may make his journey easier, but it has also raised questions about his business deal with Fanatics and its CEO, Michael Rubin, who once owned a minority stake in the Philadelphia 76ers.

Journalist Pablo Torre has also discussed the issue. He revealed that some NBA owners have contacted him about the story.

“We're also getting tips from NBA owners who are sending me your story being like, ‘What is this?’” Torre said at Front Office Sports’ Tuned In conference.

His comments show that the story has caught the attention of people beyond fans and the media. However, they do not prove that anyone has broken NBA rules.

According to Front Office Sports, LeBron James can use Fanatics' corporate aviation because of a multi-year trading-card deal he signed in January 2024. He signed this deal while playing for the Los Angeles Lakers, before joining the 76ers in 2026.

A spokesperson for James confirmed the arrangement to FOS. “The deal we signed with Fanatics almost three years ago includes access to their corporate aviation,” the spokesperson said.

James splits his time between New York and Philadelphia, so he needs to travel regularly between the two places. A helicopter can complete the journey in around 30 minutes. A car journey can take between 90 minutes and two hours.

Front Office Sports also reported that a one-way helicopter trip on this route can cost between $4,000 and $10,000.

This matters because James reportedly had access to the aircraft before he joined Philadelphia.

On his show, Pablo Torre Finds Out, Torre also discussed how the news of James' signing became public. He pointed out that Topps, a trading-card company owned by Fanatics, broke the news.

“I have never seen a big announcement like this broken by a trading card company, but here it was,” Torre said.

Torre also said that league sources had wondered whether Rubin convinced James to join Philadelphia at Fanatics Fest. However, this is only speculation. No confirmed information proves that this is how the signing happened, and Torre said the 76ers’ PR team didn’t reply when his show asked for comment.

Torre has made it clear that he is not accusing James or the 76ers of breaking any rules.

He said, “This is not me alleging this is cap circumvention.”

Salary-cap circumvention happens when a team or player uses an arrangement to get around NBA salary rules. However, receiving a benefit through an existing business deal does not automatically mean that someone has broken those rules.

At the Tuned In conference, Torre said his team was “looking into all of the ways that it is both a good story as well as something of interest to the league.”

He also accepted that the story might simply be an interesting business issue rather than a rule violation.

This arrangement has attracted more attention because of Rubin's past connection to the 76ers.

Rubin once owned a minority stake in the 76ers but sold it in 2022. According to PhillyVoice, he left the ownership group as Fanatics expanded into sports betting. This move helped avoid possible conflicts with NBA ownership rules.

Rubin remains closely connected to Fanatics. The company is behind James' trading-card deal and his reported access to its helicopter. This connection has raised questions about whether the arrangement could concern the NBA.

For now, the available information links James' helicopter access to his existing Fanatics deal. No rule violation has been established by the information discussed here.

However, NBA owners have reportedly contacted Torre about the story, and he continues to examine the details.
