The much-awaited reunion between Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson ended with the Golden State Warriors’ 120-100 victory over the Miami Heat, setting their record at 6-3 with the sixth consecutive win. Curry made it clear afterward that the friendship does not dull his competitive edge, while teammate Jimmy Butler playfully mocked Thompson online.
“I texted Draymond right after, just told him, ‘Killer Klay,’” the Golden State icon said of the surreality of playing against his Splash Bro. “It's always great to see him having fun. But then you obviously wanted to come in and shut his water off tonight, but it’s still surreal playing against him. It’s always going to be that way. Cause we’ve gone through so many battles together.”
Curry’s game-high 29 points, 4 assists, and 1 rebound gave the Warriors a soaring victory against the Heat, whose star Giannis Antetokounmpo recorded 20 points, 14 rebounds, and 4 assists. Thompson, on the other hand, just had 11 points, 3 assists, and 2 blocks. But there was nothing but appreciation between the former teammates, especially with Curry talking about those parts of Thompson’s play that don’t always show in the box.

“It’s kind of cool to guard him, and you know, he still runs the same,” he added. “The same petty actions; you’ve been on the other side of it for so long, so there’s an appreciation there. But I think mostly, it’s just an excitement of the fact that we’re still able to have battles. And everyone that you get is one closer to the end, so you try to appreciate it, even though there’s definitely a competitive spirit out there.”
In fact, amid a campaign full of revenge arcs and players getting back at former teams, Thompson himself entered Chase Center with excitement. Speaking a day earlier about facing the Warriors, the current Heat star said it would be fun to play against his “old friends.”
“Hopefully I can continue to stay afloat because I made a lot of buckets in that building,” Thompson said following the 117-116 win over the LA Clippers. “It’s fun to beat up on old friends, so that would be awesome to come away with a back-to-back win.”
Although the “back-to-back” win didn’t really come through, there was no animosity. The two friends chatted about the Davidson Wildcats beating the Washington State Cougars, and Curry got the “best end of that bet.” If all of this didn’t already speak for their friendship, there was Warriors star Jimmy Butler, ready with an Instagram post to make the moment even better.
Following the Warriors’ win over Miami, Butler posted an AI-generated video of Curry and Thompson, where the Heat star could be seen handing Curry a “W” (win). To that, Curry replied, “No, don't just hand it to me. I gotta take it from you.”
The scene escalated to Curry ultimately taking the “W” through a fight, saying to Thompson, “Remember, you don’t know me anymore.”
Again, it was a playful reminder that the jerseys may change, but the years-long friendship remains unshakable. But that obviously doesn’t mean there won’t be competition in the paint.
