LeBron James has announced that he will leave the Los Angeles Lakers after eight years, and many expect him to sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers this summer. If he does, it would mark his second reunion with the franchise, bringing him back to where his NBA career began. While he has yet to officially sign with the Cavs, James’ recent trip to Ohio has fueled speculation about another reunion. Adding to that speculation, he was also seen spending time with someone closely connected to the organization.
An image of the four-time MVP was shared on social media, which showed him hanging out with some of his high school teammates. Among them is Brandon Weems, who is now an Assistant General Manager with the Cavs.
Of course, the two hanging out with their other friends is not a definitive indication that James is also coming back. This could just be two good friends hanging out while the 41-year-old free agent is back in town.
A few other teams are pursuing James, and each offers a compelling case for why he should join them. In fact, even his agent, Rich Paul, recognizes that the Cavs are not the only realistic option.
According to Paul on 'Game Over,' teams like the Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, Denver Nuggets, and Minnesota Timberwolves.
He also mentioned that the Golden State Warriors could be in consideration, but they are nowhere near the top of the list.
Since James is reportedly willing to take a smaller contract, he does not have to rush into choosing his destination. As long as whichever team wants him leaves an open roster spot, they can sign him later on once their other pieces are in place.
Should he decide to come to Cleveland, though, the Cavaliers are reportedly keeping two roster spots open.
The Cavaliers Will Keep a Spot for Bronny James as Well
The Los Angeles Lakers helped fulfill one of LeBron James’ dreams when they drafted his son, Bronny James, in 2024. They also became the first father-son duo to share the court in an actual NBA game. However, there’s no guarantee that will happen again.
LeBron is now an unrestricted free agent. Meanwhile, Bronny remains in LA, still on his rookie contract.
Should LeBron decide to join the Cavaliers, though, the dream of being on the same team as his son might live on.
According to Marc Stein and Jake Fischer on The Stein Line, the Cavs’ front office will be leaving an extra roster spot open. So, if LeBron decides to return to Cleveland next season, they can trade for Bronny.
If LeBron does go back to Cleveland, the Cavs will have one of the most stacked starting fives in the league next season.
James Harden and Donovan Mitchell together in the backcourt are already an explosive duo. Both are capable of dominating the offense, and they already have reliable defenders backing them up.
Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen are two of the most elite big men in the league today. Mobley was named Defensive Player of the Year in 2025, and his game fits well alongside the team’s star backcourt.
Allen is a tenacious rebounder who has the length to bother shots inside. With him patrolling the paint, the team also has a potent lob threat.
LeBron, on paper, has a skill set that fits nearly any lineup. He can set up his teammates while still scoring when needed. If he came in as the Cavaliers’ starting small forward, the team would have a solid chance of making a deep postseason run and a legitimate shot at the championship.
