The Los Angeles Lakers are set to enter a new NBA season without LeBron James for the first time in eight years. Now leading the Lakers is none other than last season's scoring champion, Luka Doncic. Despite the blasphemy he receives from fans and analysts for not working hard on the court, it appears that Doncic is taking a different approach this summer.
When the new Lakers crew flew out to Slovenia to bond and work on their chemistry, images of Luka went viral on social media. This is due to his new appearance. Doncic looks significantly slimmer and has obviously been working hard in the gym. Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas recently reacted to Luka's new physique and how it benefits the Lakers.
"Y'all in trouble," Arenas said about Doncic's new physique on his podcast. "Laker Nation, that leading scorer and trophy is going to be ours. It's going to have our name on it ... Because if the fat one averaged 32 or 33 on you, what do you think the skinny one is about to average with no LeBron James?"
Arenas then briefly noted his observation on why Doncic suddenly transformed his physique.
"You see? Women will do that to you," Arenas added. "There ain't no way he didn't work out. That's the wife. Got his a** stressing. Sometimes, that negativity burns you for you to be successful."
Doncic is currently undergoing a battle for custody over his two young daughters. The Slovenian superstar ended his engagement with his long-time fiancée in March. This was simply due to the couple arguing over where they want their family to live moving forward.
However, we can't necessarily confirm that it's because of his ongoing dispute that Doncic has lost a significant amount of weight. It could also be due to his focus and desire to help the Lakers win the championship this coming season. Whatever the case may be, 'Skinny' Luka could turn out to be a threat in the league once the season commences.
Luka Doncic Invites Dirk Nowitzki's Mentor to Help Lakers Practice
Luka Doncic seems to be taking the upcoming 2026-27 season seriously after his recent body transformation. To add the cherry on top, a month ahead of the NBA training camp, Doncic also hosted a private practice session with his Los Angeles Lakers teammates in Slovenia.
While everyone was initially aware that Luka's teammates were coming to his hometown to bond, what we didn't see coming was them working on the hardwood. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Doncic invited Dirk Nowitzki's shooting coach and mentor, Holger Geschwinder.
Apparently, Geschwinder now also works with Doncic as they help the youth hone their skills on their path to becoming the next big basketball star.
Geschwinder is also responsible for the Hall of Fame career Nowitzki had in the NBA. Having someone of his caliber training the Lakers will undoubtedly help bolster the team, especially in shooting.
