Kawhi Leonard Trade Gets Delayed Again as Clippers Take Another Step

In 2019, the Kawhi Leonard sweepstakes took so long to resolve. Reporters camped out for weeks trying to guess where he'd land, with the Clippers, Lakers, and Raptors all waiting on an answer. Six years later, a Leonard-involved transaction is dragging out again, except this time it isn't Leonard making anyone wait. It's the organization around him.

Bleacher Report's Jake Fischer reported that the Kawhi Leonard trade to the Toronto Raptors, agreed to in principle since June 30, still hasn't been finalized. And the holdup has nothing to do with basketball.

"The Clippers are still working through their new front office structure," Fischer wrote, following the suspensions of owner Steve Ballmer and basketball operations president Lawrence Frank as part of the league's sanctions in the salary cap circumvention investigation.

Both men were central figures in every major roster decision the Clippers have made over the past several seasons. And their simultaneous removal from day-to-day operations has left the front office needing to reestablish who is actually authorized to sign off on finalizing a trade of this scale.

The delay is a direct consequence of the historic punishment the NBA handed down on Sept. 2. The league found that the Clippers had violated salary cap rules by funneling money to Leonard through no-show endorsement deals, and responded by stripping the franchise of five consecutive first-round draft picks from 2029 through 2033, fining the team $30 million.

They suspended Ballmer for a full year and handed Frank a six-month suspension. Business operations president Gillian Zucker also received a one-year unpaid suspension.

With all three of the organization's most senior decision-makers sidelined simultaneously, the basic structure needed to close out a major trade is missing.

Signing off on medical reviews, finalizing draft compensation language, and coordinating with the league office were all slowed, even though all parties involved reportedly still intend to complete the deal as originally structured.

The trade itself remains unchanged. Toronto is sending Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, multiple first-round picks, second-round picks, and a first-round pick swap to Los Angeles in exchange for Leonard, who will return to the city where he won a championship and Finals MVP in 2019.

Both Ingram and Dick have been left in limbo since the deal was agreed to in June. Unable to report to either team while the investigation and now the front-office reorganization play out around them.

GM Trent Redden, pulled up from Cleveland's front office and widely respected across the league, remains in place and is expected to be the primary figure. He will be tasked with steering the Clippers through the transition, alongside longtime assistant GM Mark Hughes. Still, even a competent supporting staff needs clarity on the chain of command before signing off on a franchise-altering trade.

Leonard, for his part, has already been fined $700,000 individually as part of the league's findings, but was not suspended. He remains eligible to play the moment the trade is completed.
