Jalen Duren Holds Firm on $40M Demand Despite Hefty Contract Offers From Pistons

Jalen Duren and the Detroit Pistons are currently $5 million apart in their contract expectations. Duren, who had a fantastic outing last season when he broke out of his shell for 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds while shooting 65% from the field, is a free agent after four seasons with the Pistons.

His efforts helped Cade Cunningham and the Pistons notch the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference for the 2026 NBA Playoffs. Because of that impact, the team is looking to bring Duren back, especially since he's a restricted free agent, meaning they have leverage in re-signing him.

Per ESPN's Tim MacMahon, Detroit reportedly offered him a five-year deal, paying him $35 million annually. While it's a huge upgrade compared to his previous four-year, $19.4 million contract, Duren is expecting over $40 million annually and will remain firm on that asking price.

"There's still a gap," an executive from another team told ESPN, "and it's going to drag."

As of this writing, Duren's situation in Detroit remains a blur. Because he's a restricted free agent, he doesn't have the freedom of choice to simply sign with another team.

If Duren and the Pistons fail to reach an agreement, the breakout star will have to sign his one-year qualifying offer worth $9.6 million before hitting free agency in 2027.

Jalen Duren has a huge decision to make this offseason. Per Bleacher Report, he is the only one of six members of the 2022 draft class that has received a qualifying offer, while the other five - Mark Williams, Bennedict Mathurin, Tari Eason, Walker Kessler, and Peyton Watson - have signed multi-year deals.

Based on the current situation, NBA insider Brett Siegel believes that Duren will eventually give in, especially since there's no way out of Detroit for the 22-year-old.

On last week's episode of "Clutch Scoops," Siegel revealed that Duren's contract talks stalled in mid-August, with neither party engaging for around two weeks. But that changed last week.

"Conversations have since resumed," Siegel said via @ClutchPoints on X. "He and his management have been talking with the Pistons lately. And it does seem like that within the next 14 to 20 days or so, we're gonna get some contract details here, and I think that they're gonna reach a long-term agreement because there's no sign-and-trade on the table."

Siegel also pointed out that no other teams have the salary cap space to accommodate Duren, and all signs point to an extension with the Pistons. Whether that would be a multi-year signing or the acceptance of a qualifying offer to hit free agency in 2027 remains to be seen.
