Mavericks’ Kyrie Irving Trade Idea Comes to Light Amid Heat Rumors, Per Insider

The Dallas Mavericks are now rebuilding their roster around their upcoming sophomore, Cooper Flagg. After former Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison flopped the Luka Doncic trade, arguably making the team worse than what it once was, the new management did damage control. The injury-prone Anthony Davis was shipped to DC, and earlier this summer, Klay Thompson was waived, resulting in his joining the Miami Heat.

Aside from Flagg, the only other star remaining on the roster is Kyrie Irving. Many are wondering what the future looks like for Kyrie. While the Mavericks have declared they have no intention of trading Irving this summer, recent reports suggest they could let him go as the 2026-27 season progresses. Heat insider Brendan Tobin claims that Kyrie could soon join Thompson in South Beach.

"Durant and Irving, I saw a little Durant post on IG; those two, to me, I think could be primed to be a Heat swing if it doesn’t go well for whatever reason," Tobin said on his YouTube show. That, to me, looks like if you snoop around and be like, what’s the obvious... I was getting hit up on the Kyrie Irving thing nonstop... I’m not telling you the Heat won’t trade for Kyrie Irving... I think it would be unbelievably cool."

What makes Tobin's speculation worth taking seriously is the structural logic underneath it. Miami has quietly positioned itself as a landing spot for stars on expiring or restructured deals, and Irving, coming off an ACL tear at 34, fits the profile of a player whose market value may not survive a slow start. Tobin himself framed it less as a rumor and more as a pattern recognition.

Other sources reported that while the Mavericks have been actively rejecting offers for Irving this summer, there's a strong possibility they will re-evaluate his contract closer to the trade deadline in February 2027.

Dallas will also be closely observing how Kyrie will perform at the start of the season, especially after coming from a career-threatening ACL tear.

This is where the calculus gets complicated for Dallas. If Irving plays well, his trade value rises, but so does his usefulness to a Flagg-centered rebuild. If he struggles, his value craters and they're stuck. The Mavericks are essentially watching a ticking clock, with the February deadline functioning as a forced decision point rather than a moment of leverage.

Mavericks Star Looking Forwards to Kyrie Irving's Return

Since getting drafted to the Dallas Mavericks last year, Cooper Flagg hasn't had the opportunity to play with Kyrie Irving yet. This was due to Irving's ACL tear, which he sustained in March 2025. While there were reports that he'd make a comeback last season, the severity of his injury and the time it took to recover hindered him from doing so.

However, now that Kyrie is reportedly 100% healthy, it appears that he's making up for lost time and is now training with Flagg this summer. NBA training camp doesn't start until towards the end of September. But some stars, including Irving and Flagg, have already opted to train and work on their chemistry before training camp commences.

The incoming sophomore recently opened up about how it felt to train next to Irving for the first time and what his expectations are heading into the 2026-27 season.

"To get in the gym with Kyrie this offseason, he's back healthy. Kyrie is obviously one of the greats, so to be able to share the floor with him and learn from him on the fly, and be able to go out there to compete, it's going to be a lot of fun," Flagg said in a workout interview reposted by MFFL NATION on X.

Given Irving's championship experience and veteran status, it'll be interesting to see how much further he can help elevate Flagg into the next level this coming season.

The significance of this pairing goes beyond locker room chemistry. Irving is one of the few players in NBA history whose offensive footprint, the angles he creates, the hesitations he forces, physically teaches defenders things they can't prepare for in film sessions.

For a player like Flagg, who already arrives with elite instincts, training daily against that kind of unpredictability could accelerate his development in ways that a conventional offseason program simply can't replicate.

The real question heading into the season isn't just whether Kyrie is healthy. It's whether Dallas gets enough time with this version of him before the league's trade machinery comes calling.
