Ever since the start of the 2026-27 NBA season, one of the most interesting teams to watch has been the Minnesota Timberwolves. This is due to the new duo of LaMelo Ball and Anthony Edwards. Their combination- Ball's flair in ball-handling combined with Edwards' explosiveness- in Minnesota has arguably been one of the most exciting sights to watch in the league today.
However, it might be some time before we get to see the duo play together again. According to NBA insider Shams Charania, after only four regular-season games, Edwards needs to undergo surgery on his right knee. The recovery time from his procedure could take up to two months.
"Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards will undergo an arthroscopic procedure on his ailing right knee and miss up to two months, sources tell ESPN," Charania wrote on X.
The reason this has been kept from fans is that Edwards himself decided to play through his already injured right knee. Prior to the start of the season, Ant had already been dealing with soreness and pain in his knee.
It started back in the 2026 NBA Playoffs. During the Wolves' playoff series against the Denver Nuggets, there was already inflammation and swelling in his right knee.
Fast forward to the 2026 NBA Preseason, sources report that Edwards still felt pain in his right knee, but decided to battle through it. For someone who's technically injured, Ant has had an amazing start to his season.
Looking at his numbers, he's averaging 33.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.0 steals. He's also had two 40+-point games: 45 points against the Miami Heat and 47 points against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Despite the positive result, it was the Timberwolves who made the tough decision to mandate that Edwards get an arthroscopic procedure.
NBA Legend Expresses Concerns About Stars Getting Injured After Anthony Edwards' Abrupt Sideline
The 2026-27 NBA season has only begun, and a plethora of prominent players have already been sidelined due to injury. Aside from the recently announced surgery on Anthony Edwards, guys like Jalen Williams, Ben Simmons, Kawhi Leonard, and Brandon Ingram, along with many other notable names, have been forced to sit out due to injury.
NBA legend Tracy McGrady recently expressed concern about how many stars are getting hurt this early in the regular season. He then expressed his disappointment, as he had been looking forward to the new duo of Edwards and LaMelo Ball flourishing in Minnesota.
"It's a disappointing start of the NBA season as a whole," McGrady said on NBC. "You have stars going down. To hear this about Antman, with a team that I felt like was ascending in the right space, made a good deal bringing in LaMelo. Adding great personalities that matches, Ant and everybody else in that locker room... For me, it's like, you went from chasing or going for the top seed to now trying to stay afloat with Antman being out."
As NBA insider Shams Charania mentioned, Edwards could be out for up to two months. That means the earliest Ant could make his return is by Christmas. But he could also recover much quicker and return sooner.
