Raptors Make Decision on Kawhi Leonard’s Future After Clippers Owner Steve Ballmer Accepts NBA Punishment

When Steve Ballmer issued his apology statement accepting the NBA's punishment for salary cap circumvention, he never once mentioned Kawhi Leonard by name. It was a silence that left many people wondering whether the Clippers still intended to complete the trade to Toronto at all. That uncertainty is over as the Raptors and Clippers have now given the final sign-off needed to send Leonard back to Toronto, exactly as originally agreed.

According to ESPN's Shams Charania, the Clippers and Raptors have both agreed to complete the blockbuster trade sending Leonard to Toronto. The two sides are now working to schedule the official trade call with the league. The deal had originally been struck on June 30, then paused for more than two months while the NBA investigated the Clippers over Leonard's compensation arrangements.

The terms remain unchanged from the original agreement. Kawhi Leonard heads to Toronto in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a first-round pick swap in 2027, and second-round picks in 2030 and 2033.

It's a substantial return for a Clippers team that entered the offseason desperate to move on from the Leonard era and was further hampered when the league stripped Los Angeles of five additional first-round picks as part of its punishment.

Charania reported that the Clippers used the 13 days since the NBA handed down its punishment to absorb the fallout. They worked through internal roster logistics before giving their final sign-off on Monday.

That gap is what fueled speculation in the days immediately after the punishment was announced. The Clippers stayed quiet on the trade, and Ballmer's own statement made no mention of Leonard at all.

That silence was enough to raise real doubts. With the Clippers offering no public confirmation and Ballmer's statement avoiding Leonard's name, some speculated that the front office might be exploring an alternative path rather than sticking with the Raptors deal already on the table.

The Ingram-and-Dick package pushes the Clippers to 17 players under contract for next season. Meaning the front office still needs to trim at least two spots before the regular season begins. On top of that was the unusual complication of finalizing a major trade while the team's own owner served a suspension. .

With the sign-off now official, the Clippers can finally shift their full attention to reshaping the rest of the roster around Ingram. The Raptors will turn to figuring out how a 34-year-old Leonard fits into a new frontcourt built around the franchise's 2019 championship memory.
