All-NBA Star Warned He Could End Up Like Jonathan Kuminga as $190M Pistons Offer Remains on the Table

Despite receiving multiple hefty salary offers, Jonathan Kuminga ended up signing with the Minnesota Timberwolves on a smaller contract. Kuminga is currently signed to a two-year contract worth $12.4 million with the Wolves. That's approximately $6.2 million annually, which is less than what the Los Angeles Lakers offered him earlier this summer.

The Lakers offered him approximately $15 million annually over three years. That's almost $9 million more per year. However, due to waiting for an ideal situation, Kuminga ultimately ended up in Minnesota. Former NBA player Brendan Haywood recently warned free agent Jalen Duren of a similar fate he could encounter if he doesn't accept the Detroit Pistons' $190 million offer.

"Don't miss out on $190 million trying to chase that extra $10 million," Haywood said in Gil's Arena. "If you got $190 million, you're going to live the same life. But if you don't get to $190 million, things can be a little different... I've seen way too many guys mess up their bag pocket watching. 'Oh, if he got $200 million, they've got to give me $200 million.' Listen, if that guy's getting $42 million a year, and you're getting $38 million a year, take the damn $38 million a year."

Detroit's last offer was a five-year deal in the $190 million range, but Duren's camp has turned it down and is seeking at least $200 million. That $10 million gap, spread over five years, is narrower than it sounds. Because Duren earned All-NBA Third Team honors last season, he qualifies for the Rose Rule, making him eligible for a five-year contract starting at 30% of the salary cap, worth approximately $287 million.

Detroit's offer sits well below even the standard 25% max that three of his 2022 draft classmates, Chet Holmgren, Paolo Banchero, and Jalen Williams, received at five years and $239 million. Duren, technically, is eligible for more than all of them.

If no deal comes together by the end of September, Duren is increasingly prepared to play the 2026-27 season on his $9.6 million qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

That path has a firm logistical deadline: under the collective bargaining agreement, the qualifying offer deadline can be pushed as late as March 1. Accepting it would cost Duren enormous guaranteed money in the short term, but it would also strip Detroit of the restricted free agency matching rights it currently holds over him, transforming the entire power dynamic heading into the 2027 offseason.

Pistons Competing For Jalen Duren With Another NBA Team

As mentioned earlier, the Sacramento Kings are heavily scouting the Jalen Duren situation with the Detroit Pistons. Apparently, it's due to Duren's close relationship with Kings general manager Scott Perry.

NBA insider Marc Spears revealed that Duren and Perry's relationship dates back to Duren's 2022 draft. It's because of this bond that Duren could be holding out until the Pistons set him free from the shackles of being a restricted free agent.

However, it doesn't seem like the Pistons have any intention of letting him go anytime soon. Spears also mentioned that Detroit's priority is to get Duren back on the roster immediately.

"Scott Perry has a relationship with Jalen Duren dating to when he was trying to get the Knicks to draft him, which they did, but they traded him to the Pistons," Spears said on NBA Today.

"Duren likes Scott Perry a lot; he likes Sacramento a lot, but the Pistons, they're focused on bringing him back," Spears added. "They have some optimism, but it's complicated. I just hear that Jalen- it's not about money right now. He feels disrespected…There's a black cloud going into camp… They gotta try to fix it, and I don't know if they can in time."

For now, all we can do is wait and see how the Pistons and Duren will resolve the contract issue.
