"Questioning My Character": NBA Legend Breaks Silence on Jaylen Brown's Team USA Controversy

Philadelphia 76ers guard Jaylen Brown spoke out back in 2024 about being snubbed for the Paris Olympics team, with a specific spurn for shoe brand Nike. This has recently been addressed by NBA legend Grant Hill, as he was the managing director of the USA Men's National Team at the time.

Brown's former teammates, Jayson Tatum and Derrick White, were selected instead, while the 2024 Finals MVP was left behind. Brown took to social media to speculate about conspiracy theories, blaming Nike, who are the official sponsor for the USA Basketball team, for influencing Team USA's recruitment process. Hill took offense to this comment and opened up about the situation on the Road Trippin’ Show on July 20.

"Something got lost there, and the implication that a shoe company, like, to me, look, you guys can criticize my leadership. You can criticize the ability to put together a roster... But to imply that a shoe company told me what to do. Now you're questioning my character, and that was the thing that was weird."

White was selected over Brown when Kawhi Leonard withdrew from Team USA. Initially, everyone believed that Brown's rants were directed towards his former Celtics teammate. However, Brown made sure to contact White personally and clarify that it was the organization that he was after. He even spoke to reporters at the NBA Summer League games that year about the same, per NBC Sports Boston.

"I wasn’t surprised. But my reaction was, I was happy for D-White. It’s dope to have so much of our guys on there. I was happy for those guys. But I wasn’t surprised."

Two years of silence were shattered when Hill spoke on Road Trippin. And it comes at a time when Brown is heading back to Boston as a Sixer for the first time.

Jaylen Brown Set to Make Boston Return

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has yet to finalize the entire league schedule. This is due to LeBron James not making his decision yet regarding which team he wants to play for this coming season.

However, the schedule for the preseason has already rolled out. One of the interesting matchups during the preseason will be the game between the Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics. Both teams are set to face off on October 10. The Celtics will have home court advantage.

Having that in mind, this will be the first time Jaylen Brown makes his appearance at TD Garden as part of the opposing team. Though we're not entirely sure if the Sixers plan on having Brown play during the preseason games.

Former Sixer PJ Tucker recently opened up about what a matchup between the Sixers and Celtics would look like.

"If you look at the playoff series this year, (Paul George) might have had a better series than (Jaylen Brown). So how does Philly win (the trade)? I think it’s tough. I’m rocking with PG. Like, I’m hating how everybody I mean, respect to JB, but PG is still a hell of a player. If PG don’t get suspended and all that stuff don’t happen, then I think we having another conversation. ... I’m still liking (Jayson Tatum) and PG in a series. I like the Celtics, bro."

Both Brown and George, respectively, should be looking forward to familiarizing themselves with their new teammates come the NBA training camp this coming September. It remains to be seen whether Brown, along with Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid, can lead the Celtics to victory during the regular season matchups.
