The OKC Thunder are looking to bounce back after failing to defend their NBA title last season. In the 2026 Western Conference Finals, the San Antonio Spurs dethroned the 2025 NBA champions in seven games. It was a heartbreaking series for Thunder fans. Still, it was a strong finish for OKC, and the Thunder remain one of the top contenders in the West heading into the 2026-27 season.

However, the Thunder won't enter the new season without any setbacks. According to Thunder insider Clemente Almanza, rookie Otega Oweh suffered a torn Achilles tendon and has already undergone surgery. He will miss the entire 2026-27 season.

"Otega Oweh has sustained a torn Achilles tendon. He had surgery for it today. He will miss the 2026-27 season," Almanza wrote on X.

Almanza also posted an official statement from the Thunder regarding Oweh's injury situation.

"Oklahoma City Thunder guard Otega Oweh underwent a successful procedure today to address a ruptured right Achilles tendon, the team announced," the statement reads.

"The procedure was performed by Dr. Martin O'Malley at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, with Thunder medical personnel present," the statement continued.

"Oweh sustained the injury during the Thunder's preseason game versus the Indiana Pacers on Oct. 13. Oweh will miss the remainder of the 2026-27 season. Further updates will be provided as appropriate," the statement concluded.

This is an unfortunate turn of events for the Thunder, especially since Oweh’s injury keeps a haunting streak alive. This is the third consecutive year that a Thunder rookie has missed their supposed debut due to a season-ending injury.

The Athletic's Law Murray also noted that this is the fourth out of five seasons that a Thunder rookie has been ruled out for the season.

The first to miss their debut was Chet Holmgren in 2022 due to a Lisfranc injury. Then, in 2024 and 2025, Nikola Topic and Thomas Sorber both suffered an ACL injury. Now, in 2026, Oweh suffered a torn Achilles.

Thunder HC Opens Up About His Other Rookie

While it's sad to see OKC Thunder rookie Oweh go out with a torn Achilles, the team still has another rookie to look forward to. The 12th overall pick of the 2026 NBA Draft, Aday Mara, has impressed in his first preseason with the team.

Looking at the four preseason games he's played for the team so far, Mara has put up incredible numbers. He's currently averaging 15.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.8 blocks per game, while also shooting a highly efficient 79.3% from the field.

In his first two preseason games, Mara could not miss. He went a combined 15-for-15 from the field on October 6 and 7, scoring 34 points in that stretch.

That start has caught his coach's attention, and Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault seems to be pleased with Mara.

"He's got a two-end impact," Daigneault told Thunder beat writer Clemente Almanza. "He’s a very good screen setter for a young player. He obviously has good passing instincts. He's got great hands. He's a great roller, an elite roller. Actually, it's probably his best offensive skill."

With a promising rookie on the roster, the Thunder may have significantly bolstered their lineup, potentially finding the Victor Wembanyama stopper.

For now, everything remains to be seen. We're unsure how Mara would perform in the grueling 82-game regular season.
