LeBron James Could Be Tempted to Rejoin Lakers Again, Per LA Insider

Despite LeBron James choosing to become a free agent, the Los Angeles Lakers seems to have done very well in retooling. They managed to acquire several players via signings and trades who can impact winning now.

Due to how deep the Lakers seem on paper, it might actually lead the 41-year-old star to return. At least, that's what insider Trevor Lane thinks when discussing how well-built the current roster is on paper.

"Alright, not everybody's going to agree with this," Lane said. "But with all the talk about where LeBron James is going to land, it's interesting that the best spot for him is actually to reconsider and go back to the Lakers."

According to him, James would fit perfectly as the starting power forward for the new look Lakers. He added that, given the depth they amassed this summer, they have a real chance to contend for a title, making them the ideal landing spot for James.

Interestingly, the Lakers were the only team not included in the James sweepstakes when he first announced he was entering free agency.

The league-wide assessment was that, technically, any of the 29 other teams had a chance to sign him. The one organization that was not part of it was his most recent team, the Lakers.

After all, he had just decided that he wasn't going to come back. In fact, Rich Paul, his agent, said on 'Game Over' that while the Lakers were interested in re-signing James, they didn't even hold a meeting to discuss a new contract since it would have been a waste of time.

Now, pundits and fans are putting James in hypothetical scenarios to see which teams he'd best fit in with.

The Lakers haven't been part of that conversation since he has already ruled them out, but hypothetically, it might actually be a good place for him.

How Would LeBron James Fit In With the Lakers?

LeBron James proved last season that he was still capable of being the primary option. Through 60 games in 2026-27, he put up 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists.

His scoring and playmaking remain vital aspects of his game, but what makes him truly valuable at 41 is his tremendous basketball IQ and ability to control the pace of a game. These are important assets regardless of which team he joins.

What makes it work well with the Los Angeles Lakers is that he already has chemistry with Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, who will be head coach JJ Redick's primary options next season.

He also already knows Redick's system, so there likely won't be any growing pains there.

In terms of fit, it's safe to say the Lakers currently don't have a clear starting forward. They could go with Sandro Mamukelashvili, Jake LaRavia, or Jarred Vanderbilt, but no one would bat an eye or complain if James is named the starter.

Not because they don't have talent, but James is clearly a better choice to fill that role, should he decide to return to the Lakers.
