LeBron James' Agent Reveals How Many Teams Are Pursuing the Lakers Star in Free Agency

LeBron James still carries significant influence around the league, even at 41 years old, despite persistent retirement speculation. He continued to perform at a high level during the 2025-26 season, averaging 21 points per game for the Lakers while remaining a player defenses had to account for on every possession. However, with his future in Los Angeles seemingly uncertain, several teams are reportedly interested in acquiring the four-time NBA champion, even if only for a short-term stint.

During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, LeBron's agent, Rich Paul, was asked how many teams have called to inquire about the four-time champion.

He revealed that about a third of the league is trying to secure LeBron's services for next season, with the exact number ranging between 10 and 12.

However, he did not specifically name those teams.

At the moment, it's safe to assume that one of those interested teams is located in California.

The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly eager to retain James this offseason, despite the King not having signed a new deal with the franchise yet. Then, there's the Golden State Warriors, who reportedly want James to pair up with Stephen Curry and go for a championship.

Outside of the Western Conference, the Cleveland Cavaliers are also in the rumor mill. With Ohio being James' home state, it's not hard to imagine that the Cavs' front office is trying to orchestrate another reunion, and perhaps another shot at the ring.

The first time James returned in 2014, the Cavaliers won their first-ever NBA title, defeating the Warriors in the 2016 Finals after coming back from a 3-1 deficit. This isn't prime James anymore, but having him on the same team as Donovan Mitchell and James Harden could help the Cavs bounce back after they were swept 4-0 in the Eastern Conference Finals last month.

That said, Paul, who has been James' agent since 2012, also made it clear that James has not yet decided what he'll do this summer.

Rich Paul Clarifies That He and LeBron James Haven’t Discussed The Future

During Paul's appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, the former NFL punter turned talk-show host sought additional insight into LeBron James' future, a topic the entire NBA community is eager to learn more about.

Earlier, McAfee asked how many teams had called to inquire about signing James and where the 41-year-old stood in his decision between returning and retiring.

McAfee noted that James appears to be enjoying his time away from the court, leading some to believe he is considering retirement. At the same time, he pointed out that because the four-time NBA champion is still capable of performing at a high level, others expect him to continue playing.

Paul responded by shutting down all the various types of rumors.

"Here's what I'll say," Paul said. "Believe nothing that's out there because I haven't had one conversation with him."

James' agent said he's allowing his client to have the conversation with his family rather than him, since it is a family decision rather than a business one.

LeBron James has not indicated what he'll decide this summer. Whether he's still contemplating or is simply waiting for the right time to make the announcement is a secret.

"I'm still in the moment of like, just taking my time," the four-time NBA champion said on his Mind the Game podcast last month. "I haven't even really thought about it too much. Obviously, I understand that I'm a free agent and I can control my own destiny, (if it's) being here with this (Lakers) franchise for the foreseeable future, or if it's going somewhere else."

Once James is ready to tell the world, though, it's safe to assume that Rich Paul would be among the very first people to know.

Until that decision is announced, speculations, rumors, and hypothetical scenarios will continue to circulate.
