Insider Reveals Victor Wembanyama's Insane Physical Transformation Story as Meeting with Rob Pelinka Comes to Light

Victor Wembanyama has already spent parts of his young career learning from basketball royalty.
Hall of Famers like Tim Duncan, David Robinson, and Kevin Garnett have all helped shape pieces of his development, while Gregg Popovich built the foundation of his NBA growth in San Antonio.
But one of the more unexpected influences on Wembanyama’s recent transformation turned out to be Rob Pelinka.
Younger NBA fans know Pelinka as the architect of the Los Angeles Lakers front office. Long before that, though, he was the longtime agent of Kobe Bryant, and it was Bryant’s obsessive preparation methods that ultimately connected Pelinka to Wembanyama’s camp.
According to Ramona Shelburne of ESPN, Wembanyama’s agent, Bouna Ndiaye, reached out to Pelinka in April 2025 searching for unconventional ways to help his client physically and mentally evolve after his season-ending blood clot diagnosis.
Pelinka explained how Bryant once studied great white sharks to understand patience, angles, and timing while preparing to defend Allen Iverson. He also arranged a private Sistine Chapel tour for Bryant so he could study Michelangelo’s perseverance while creating a masterpiece under brutal physical conditions.
Soon after the Pelinka meeting, Wembanyama began one of the most unconventional offseason programs the NBA has seen in years.
The Spurs superstar traveled to a Shaolin temple in China, where he spent roughly 10 days training with monks in an effort to improve his balance, conditioning, center of gravity, and mental discipline ahead of the 2025-26 season.
The training reportedly included meditation sessions, kung fu drills, forest sprints, uneven-terrain exercises, and nighttime mountain hikes designed to sharpen awareness and mental toughness.
Physically, the focus was helping Wembanyama absorb NBA contact without sacrificing the fluidity that makes him unique. Mentally, the goal was building endurance, focus, and calm under pressure.

The payoff from that transformation was on full display in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Facing the NBA’s best defense on the road, Wembanyama delivered one of the greatest conference finals performances ever by a player his age.
Wembanyama exploded for 41 points on 14-of-25 shooting while playing a career-high 49 minutes in San Antonio’s double-overtime win.
The signature moment came in the first overtime period when he buried a deep logo three to tie the game and completely silence the Oklahoma City crowd.
He also grabbed 24 rebounds, including nine offensive boards that repeatedly extended possessions for San Antonio.
Defensively, he added three blocks while altering countless other shots around the rim, continuing the dominant two-way impact that made him one of the frontrunners for Defensive Player of the Year all season.
The performance placed Wembanyama alongside legends like Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Charles Barkley, Moses Malone, and Elgin Baylor as one of the only players ever to record a 40-point, 20-rebound game at this stage of the playoffs.
Wembanyama also became the youngest player to accomplish the feat.
Rookie guard Dylan Harper also delivered a historic performance alongside Wembanyama, finishing with 24 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, and seven steals.
Harper’s seven steals set a new Spurs playoff record, breaking marks previously shared by Kawhi Leonard, Manu Ginóbili, and Avery Johnson.
He also joined Magic Johnson as one of the only rookies in NBA history to post at least 20 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, and five steals in a playoff game.
