Mavs Part Ways With Jason Kidd as Masai Ujiri Makes First Bold Change as President

May 20, 2026, 4:55 AM CUT

Six months of uncertainty came to an end this May when the Dallas Mavericks finally filled their long-vacant front-office seat, appointing Masai Ujiri as President of Basketball Operations. It was a move that signaled urgency but also recognized that the organization had drifted far off course.

Throughout the 2025-26 season, the Mavericks struggled both on and off the court. The organization faced many challenges when former general manager and president Nico Harrison made poor decisions, such as the trade of Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.

With Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving injured, the team struggled further to become a contender in the Western Conference. While they ended up securing the first pick in the 2025 draft, picking up Cooper Flagg, it still wasn't enough to solve their problems.

Jason Kidd also faced difficulties leading an injured team while relying on his rookie. This resulted in a 26-56 record. With that in mind, it appears Ujiri would like to see some positive changes in Dallas, as he fired Kidd, the head coach, marking this as his first act as the team's president.

According to Tim MacMahon of ESPN, Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont gave Ujiri the green light to decide the future of the team's head coach. Dumont, interestingly enough, was the executive who extended Kidd's contract after the Mavs' NBA Finals run in 2024.

MacMahon also noted that Kidd was reportedly kept out of the loop throughout the hiring process of Ujiri. Kidd previously expressed interest in assuming the position of president. However, Dumont declined the idea and told him that the organization had no plans to consider him for office.

Mavericks President Brings Clarity to His Firing of Jason Kidd

After a terrible 2025-26 season, the Dallas Mavericks will look to improve their performance next season. The Mavs' new president, Masai Ujiri, is already on top of things, as he has already made one major change to the team.

Firing Jason Kidd from the head coach position might be questionable to some, especially after nearly leading the team to its second NBA title in franchise history in 2024.

Given their intentions to surround Cooper Flagg with new teammates, Ujiri wants to step into a new direction. Unfortunately for Kidd, his getting fired was part of the new president's vision.

"As we evaluate the future of our basketball program, we believe this is the right moment for a new direction for our team," Ujiri said. "We have high expectations for this franchise and a responsibility to build a basketball organization capable of sustained championship contention. We will conduct a thorough, disciplined search for our next head coach and continue to evaluate our entire basketball operations staff to ensure we compete at the standard Mavs fans expect and deserve."

On another note, Ujiri did praise Kidd for his success as the Mavericks' head coach. However, the new president would like to test the waters with a new system within the organization. For now, all we can do is wait for what else transpires during the offseason.
