LeBron James’ willingness to listen to offers from just about any team in the NBA has sent front offices around the country into a frenzy. And while some teams, like the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat, have stood out as favorites, it hasn’t stopped others from trying everything possible to make a move for the King. For James and his agent Rich Paul, it’s like having the league at their fingertips, with the freedom to weigh every option available.
Paul has taken a different approach to mapping out the possibilities. First, on his podcast Game Over, he trotted out a whiteboard listing the most realistic destinations for his client. But now, he has sent a warning, letting the league know that there's no one perfect destination.
While speaking with Max Kellerman on a recent episode of Game Over, he explained his reasoning behind the whiteboard and why he shared it. Then, he talked about his and James' mentality during this free agency period.
"I wanted to just give people insight and a little peek behind the curtain," Paul said. "Here's the thing, in times like this, it's actually pretty cool, because you can't take yourself too seriously. This is a fun time for us. It's an admiration for [LeBron]."
Later, Paul also said that the details he shared on the whiteboard, which included the players and assets each of the 10 to 12 teams had, were not the only factors he and James were considering when deciding on his next team.
"We didn't have enough space on the other whiteboard," Paul said, "Because there are other components to things, and just dots you're connecting."
"You have to try to help the picture be painted to a place in which you understand there is no perfect scenario," Paul continued. "But you gotta dump everything out to help someone make the best decision for themselves."
In all honesty, picking one team for James as he heads into what could very well be his final year in the league is difficult. Almost every possibility makes sense. He could head down to Miami, partner with Giannis, and make a case for a third ring with the Heat. He could also return home to Cleveland to end his career on a fairytale note. Or he could choose to materialize the dream of many fans by pairing up with Stephen Curry and the Warriors.
It’s quite a big decision to make, and Paul has admitted that he’s gone into greater detail to help his client decide where he’ll play next.
Rich Paul Has Looked Into Advanced Analytics Amidst LeBron James' Free Agency
In an earlier episode of Game Over, Rich Paul already said that happiness would play a major factor in deciding where LeBron James heads. What happiness entails in this context remains a bit of a mystery. Although at this stage it's clear that money or a massive contract isn't a major part of the equation.
James appears willing to sign for a significantly smaller contract. That's the only explanation as to why he's not rushing to make a decision and is allowing teams to build their rosters before he commits to anything.
Another thing that seems to be taken into consideration is that James wants to go to a winning situation. In an effort to ensure that he ends up in one, Paul has looked into important stats.
He shared with Kellerman that he's started looking into defensive ratings and on-ball and help defensive stats. That's not all he's looked into, though. He's also started studying how coaches run their offenses.
Afterward, he admitted that he doesn't really have to do all that; he's not huge on analytics, but he chooses to do so because it's a vital step right now.
With his next destination likely to be the last one, making the right decision matters more than ever to James. It's not one he can make lightly, knowing that he doesn't have a lengthy career left to correct any mistakes.
