Donovan Mitchell Responds to LeBron James-Cavs Reunion Rumors After Knicks Sweep

May 26, 2026, 7:31 AM CUT

The Knicks swept the Cavaliers 4-0 on Monday, ending Mitchell's first ECF run, and whispers of LeBron's return to Cleveland are already growing louder. For the first time in his career, Donovan Mitchell made it to the Eastern Conference Finals, also leading the Cavs to their first ECF since 2018.

While this could be considered a huge improvement for the Cavs compared to previous seasons, many still consider their ECF loss to be a failure. With that in mind, rumors of LeBron James returning to Cleveland to help them make another championship run have begun circulating. Mitchell was asked directly about those rumors, and while he deflected to the front office, his comments hinted at a player confident in his team's current direction.

"That is not for me," Mitchell said. "I am not trying to get a headline. That's a Koby Altman question, that's a Mike Gansey question."

Mitchell's deflection suggests he's prioritizing trust in the organization over inserting himself into roster decisions - a sign he believes the front office can find the right pieces without him lobbying publicly. Whether that confidence extends to being open to a LeBron reunion or whether Mitchell prefers to remain the unquestioned centerpiece of this team, he kept close to his chest.

Cavaliers president Koby Altman and general manager Mike Gansey will have a lot of restrategizing to do now that they're in their offseason. The organization will need to figure out how to take Mitchell to the finals, whether that involves bringing back the King or not.

It's also worth noting that the idea isn't entirely far-fetched. LeBron James, now 41, has expressed his desire to play for a team that can help him win one more championship before he retires. His prior return to Cleveland in 2014 resulted in a historic 2016 championship, the franchise's only title and the Cavs' deep playoff run this year could make the situation enticing for a homecoming retirement tour.

Cleveland also carries cap flexibility heading into the offseason, and their Eastern Conference Finals appearance signals a legitimate championship window.

Donovan Mitchell Apologizes to Cavs Fans After Getting Swept

The New York Knicks completed the sweep after beating the Cleveland Cavaliers, 130-93, on Monday. It was a bittersweet moment for Donovan Mitchell. Despite successfully making his first conference finals while leading the Cavs to their first since 2018, he feels bad for getting swept.

During a postgame press conference, Mitchell expressed his apologies to the city of Cleveland. He hated how his team was swept from the conference finals, but promised to come back better next season.

Despite the bitterness, Mitchell was man enough to admit that the Knicks were the better team. He had zero excuses. To the star guard, he believes that the Cavs can take their elimination, charge it to experience, and hopefully use it as motivation to climb all the way to the finals next year.

"Yeah, I have no doubt that (the Knicks) can (win the finals)," Mitchell said. "I've said that all year. I think the biggest thing is we should use this as a learning lesson. It's a tough learning lesson."

"This team that we just faced had to go through (losing the ECF last season)," Mitchell added. "Maybe not this way, but they've been a core group & had to go through this tough experience. It's our turn. I'm sorry for the city of Cleveland for it to be like this in a sweep, that's a**."

According to reports, Mitchell is eligible for a four-year extension worth $277 million this summer. Given the turn of events, it's tough to say whether or not he'll extend his contract with the Cavs. But he is expected to play in the second year of his current three-year contract next season.

James Harden's future also remains uncertain due to his player option for the 2026-27 season. Reports suggest that Harden is expected to decline his player option to ask the organization for more money. However, considering how poorly Harden played against the Knicks, that might be a tough negotiation.

In Game 1, Harden allowed Jalen Brunson to score 16 points on him, which also enabled the Knicks star to catch fire. Brunson's stellar late-game performance allowed the Knicks to catch up from a 22-point lead held by the Cavs.

Harden also shot poorly from the field throughout four games, averaging only 17.9% from 3-point territory and 37.5% shooting from the field overall.

If Harden does end up leaving Cleveland, this will further open the possibility of LeBron James making a huge comeback to his hometown.
