Plenty of Cleveland Cavaliers fans are hoping LeBron James will return to his hometown team after he announced the end of his association with the Los Angeles Lakers earlier this month. However, other teams are also in the mix, with the Eastern Conference’s Philadelphia 76ers emerging as a strong contender in recent speculation. Bob Myers, who is currently the President of Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, which owns the 76ers, even urged James to head to Philadelphia if he wants to win. But not everyone is on board with that.
If James does choose the 76ers, or any other team for that matter, ESPN Cleveland's Tony Rizzo and Chris Oldach would be heartbroken.
"If he went to Philly, I'd be bummed; if he went to Miami, I'd be bummed. What level of bummed? I can't predict," Tony Rizzo said on ESPN Cleveland. "But I'm kinda thinking now, if he doesn't come home, wow."
Chris Oldach continued, "All the tea leaves of his being in Akron, he's been with friends. To me, if it's not us, just rip the band-aid. Don't drag us along here."
The idea of James returning home to the Cavaliers, the hometown team that drafted him in 2003, for one final season is enough to make fans of the franchise shed a few tears. And even setting emotions aside, James has a compelling reason to join them.
The Cavaliers boast a powerful roster, featuring a backcourt of James Harden and Donovan Mitchell, where much of their star power lies. Complementing them is the highly skilled frontcourt duo of Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen.
If James were to join that lineup, he could slot into his natural position at small forward.
He wouldn’t have to worry about being the primary scorer or ball handler; Harden and Mitchell can shoulder that responsibility. Defensively, Mobley and Allen provide strong interior protection.
In this situation, James could lean into his playmaking or play more off the ball, receiving lobs or backdoor passes from either guard. He could also space the floor, now that he’s developed into a more reliable 3-point shooter.
From a narrative standpoint, it would also be a fitting end to his career. He has friends and family there, and he shares a deep history with the fans. If he returned and won another title in Cleveland, it would be a storybook ending to one of the greatest careers in NBA history.
Bob Myers Believes the Philadelphia 76ers Are the Best Choice for LeBron James
As LeBron James continues to drag out his decision, more and more people are sharing their opinions on what he should do. Former Warriors GM Bob Myers wants the King to head over to Philly. Why? Because Myers feels that he has the best chance of winning a fifth championship with the 76ers.
He shared his take on the latest episode of 'Game Over' with James' agent, Rich Paul, and Max Kellerman.
"What I would just say is if it's about winning, let's talk about this team because you can win here in Philadelphia," Myers said.
A major reason for this take is the acquisition of Jaylen Brown. The Sixers added a superstar who is at the top of his game and is only two years removed from winning the Finals MVP.
Even after acquiring him, they still maintained their young backcourt duo of Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe. Also, they still have Joel Embiid, who, when healthy, makes a great impact.
