“Better Defender Than LeBron”: Brian Windhorst Makes Stunning Remark About Cooper Flagg

Brian Windhorst has been building to this comparison for most of a year, in careful stages rather than all at once. Back in January, after Cooper Flagg dropped a historic 49 points against Charlotte, Windhorst put him in rare company for the first time, naming LeBron James, Luka Doncic and Victor Wembanyama as the only teenagers who'd ever impressed him that much in 24 years covering the league.

Even then, he was careful with the framing. He asserted that Flagg's defensive dominance set him apart from James' game at that age, while noting James still had the more polished scorer's instincts. Nine months later, Windhorst dropped the caution entirely.

"Cooper Flagg's a better defender than LeBron at 19," Windhorst said. "Cooper Flagg's got a better fundamental jump shot at 19. Cooper Flagg is more positionally versatile defensively at age 19."

Where his January comments stopped short of ranking the two outright, this version left no doubt about which 19-year-old Windhorst believes is the more complete player, at least on that side of the ball.

The numbers back up part of the case. Cooper Flagg averaged 21.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists across 70 games as a rookie, leading Dallas outright in points, rebounds, assists and steals while becoming the first teenager in league history to top his own team in all four categories.

He won Rookie of the Year after a tight race with former Duke teammate and Charlotte Hornets star, Kon Knueppel. He earned All-Rookie First Team honors, and had a production Windhorst has already suggested could translate into a LeBron-like leap into the league's top five as soon as his second season.

Why the Defensive Comparison Carries Real Weight

Windhorst's praise isn't just about potential. He's pointed specifically to Flagg's ability to defend multiple positions as a teenager, a skill James, for all his generational gifts, didn't fully display until later in his career.

James entered the league as a dominant offensive force first. The four-time MVP's defensive versatility developed over his first several seasons in Cleveland rather than showing up immediately as a rookie.

That's the exact gap Windhorst is highlighting. He did not argue Flagg is a better overall player than peak LeBron, or even than 19-year-old LeBron in totality; James still finished sixth in MVP voting by his second season, a bar Flagg hasn't come close to touching yet.

The claim is narrower and more specific: at this exact age, on defense and in shooting style, Flagg already looks further along. For an insider who's spent decades carefully measuring every young star against the league's all-time standard, that's about as strong an endorsement as Windhorst's own track record allows him to give.

Dallas has started the season with two wins and two losses. Flagg, in three games played, is averaging 25 points, 5.3 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game.
