Pelicans victorious in historic 2025 NBA Melbourne Series

The New Orleans Pelicans made history as the first NBA team to ever play on Australian soil, and they marked the occasion with a 107-97 victory over Melbourne United at Rod Laver Arena.

The win, part of the inaugural NBA × NBL: Melbourne Series, not only showcased the growing international reach of the league but also gave fans Down Under a memorable preview of the 2025-26 season.

Zion Williamson, moving with a leaner frame and renewed energy, delivered a highlight-laden 15-point performance in just 16 minutes of playing time. He added five assists, two steals, and two rebounds, punctuating the night with an electrifying alley-oop over a Melbourne defender after a pass from Saddiq Bey.

Trey Murphy III paced the Pelicans with 18 points, showing efficiency and aggression off the bench. Meanwhile, Jordan Poole, Jose Alvarado, and Bryce McGowens chipped in in limited stints, giving New Orleans steady secondary production.

Melbourne United, far from passive on their home floor, leaned heavily on Milton Doyle, who led all scorers with 25 points. Finn Delany added 13, and viable contributions came from Jesse Edwards and young prospect Dash Daniels, who scored in double digits as well.

The Australian side even won the third quarter 28-23, narrowing the margin and forcing late drama, but New Orleans’ size, athleticism, and composure in the final stretch sealed the deal.

Game 2 in the series pits New Orleans against South East Melbourne Phoenix on October 5. The matchup, expected to feature similar NBA energy and international flair, gives the Pelicans more runway to test rotations, chemistry, and fan engagement in Australia.
