Mike Bibby Named Head Coach at Sacramento State

Former Sacramento Kings standout Mike Bibby has been appointed as the head men's basketball coach at Sacramento State University, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Bibby becomes the 17th head coach in the program's history, returning to the city where he became a fan favorite during his NBA tenure.

Bibby, the second overall pick in the 1998 NBA Draft, had a distinguished 14-year NBA career, with a significant portion spent with the Sacramento Kings. During his time with the Kings, he was instrumental in leading the team to multiple playoff appearances in the early 2000s.

Prior to his professional career, Bibby achieved collegiate success at the University of Arizona, where he was a first-team All-American and the Pac-10 Conference Player of the Year. He played a pivotal role in guiding the Wildcats to the 1997 NCAA national championship.

Following his retirement from professional play in 2012, Bibby transitioned into coaching. He led Shadow Mountain High School in Phoenix to five state titles over six seasons and served as an assistant coach for the Puerto Rican National Team, as well as for NBA Summer League teams associated with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Memphis Grizzlies.

Expressing enthusiasm about his new role, Bibby stated, "Since 2001, Sacramento has felt like home to me."  Sacramento State Director of Athletics Mark Orr also expressed confidence in Bibby's leadership, highlighting his ability to recruit talented student-athletes and foster a culture of success both on and off the court.

Bibby's appointment is anticipated to bring renewed energy and experience to the Sacramento State Hornets as they prepare for the upcoming season.
