Kevin Durant open to play for Team USA in Los Angeles 2028 Olympics

Houston Rockets superstar Kevin Durant has made it clear he’s interested in representing Team USA once again at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, potentially aiming to compete for a historic fifth Olympic gold medal despite his age.

The 18-season veteran expressed his willingness to play for Team USA two years from now and spoke candidly about his Olympic aspirations following a strong performance for Houston this season, emphasizing that he wants to earn a roster spot, not simply receive one due to his legacy.

Durant – already the United States men’s Olympic basketball all-time scoring leader and a four-time Olympic gold medalist – told reporters he would “love” to suit up for the Olympics again, even as he approaches 40 years old when the Los Angeles Games begin. However, he stressed that his decision to play would hinge on being a meaningful contributor on the court, not merely riding on reputation.

“I didn’t want to just take my name out of consideration just because of the simple fact that I’m older … I’d love to be part of it until I’m done playing,” Durant said after a Rockets win this week, noting that he informed USA Basketball managing director Grant Hill of his intentions.

Durant’s commitment to Team USA is about helping the US to claim yet another gold medal. With a pipeline of emerging stars rising through the NBA ranks, he acknowledged that earning a roster spot in 2028 won’t be automatic, even for a future Hall of Famer.

Though not ruling out the idea that other veteran teammates such as LeBron James or Stephen Curry could return, Durant’s has highlighted his personal competitiveness and love for representing his country.

If Durant does make the 2028 team, he’ll be doing something few in NBA history have achieved – competing at five separate Olympic Games – and solidifying his place as one of the most decorated figures in American basketball history.
