'Renewed optimism' exists for potential Kyrie Irving return this season

There is renewed optimism around All-NBA guard Kyrie Irving returning to the Brooklyn Nets this season, sources tell The Athletic.

It's unclear whether Irving would get vaccinated in order to meet New York City's requirement to return, or if Brooklyn would allow him to play road games and practice at home. Sources have indicated a renewed belief that Irving could play this season after all.

ANALYSIS: Irving currently needs at least one COVID-19 vaccine shot to be eligible to participate in Nets home games. The team decided in the fall that if Irving could not participate at home, he would also not play on the road.

The star guard has not played at all this season. Charania writes that there is no evidence of New York City lifting its mandate; in fact, on Dec. 27, Irving will instead need at least two doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines.
