The USA did not waste any time taking over the game at the Sinan Erdem Dome with a 21-2 first-quarter run to go ahead by 18 points and it was clear sailing the rest of the way.
Koa Peat scored 26 points with 8 rebounds and 4 assists and Cameron Boozer collected 24 points and 13 rebounds. The USA spent the entire tournament breaking records and they snapped their mark for most points scored in a Final, besting their 111-80 win over Poland in 2010.
USA has won all seven editions of the biennial championship, adding the trophy to the ones in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2022. The 2024 team shattered several records throughout the tournament, including the most points in a single game, most assists, and most steals, and finished the tournament with an average winning margin of 64.3 points - another U17 World Cup record.
Cameron Boozer will take home another piece of hardware as he was named TISSOT Most Valuable Player of the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2024 after guiding the United States to the championship.

The 2023-2024 NBA season has wrapped up and the race for the league&rsquo;s annual awards has officially ended. Here&rsquo;s a look at my picks of the NBA's award winners.
Most Improved Player: Tyrese Maxey, Philadelphia 76ers
(Runner-ups: Coby White, Jalen Johnson)
Notes: In the end, Tyrese Maxey takes the award with the amount of burden and responsibility in a Philadelphia team reeling from the loss of James Harden to become a true No. 2 option behind reigning MVP Joel Embiid. White improved a lot this year, increasing his averages both numbers and his shooting percentages. Johnson, like White, has also increased his usage and averages by a lot, featuring as the third option behind DeJounte Murray and Trae Young, or even as the second option without one of those two. A jumbo playmaking forward, Johnson showed improvements in his playmaking as well as his ability to score and had increased numbers in shooting as well. Ultimately, Maxey wins this award out because he was a guy who increased his usage and his role while playing most of the season without Embiid.
Sixth Man of the Year: Naz Reid, Minnesota Timberwolves
(Runner-ups: Malik Monk, Bobby Portis)
Notes: Naz Reid has been the best player off the bench this season with the way he has been an offensive spark plug for the Timberwolves this season. He&rsquo;s had a phenomenal season, and he had to start and fill in for Karl-Anthony Towns when he went down while still being an efficient scorer as he is. If you factor in all the stuff for these awards, you could actually make a case for Monk, for Portis, maybe even guys like Norman Powell for the Clippers and Bogdan Bogdanovic for the Hawks. But with Minnesota going 56-26 and having the second most wins in franchise history &ndash; ultimately ending up atop the three best teams in the West, this gives a little bit of boost to Naz Reid due to his importance to the team.
Defensive Player of the Year: Rudy Gobert, Minnesota Timberwolves
(Runner-ups: Victor Wembanyama, Anthony Davis; Honorable mention: Bam Adebayo)
Notes: One of the hardest awards to figure out. Minnesota had the best defense in the league for a reason, and based on that Rudy Gobert would be a deserving winner of the award. When he&rsquo;s off the floor, the team does not perform defensively the way it does when Gobert is on the floor. This was hard because Wembanyama had a legitimate case, being the generational defender that he was. Davis also had a strong case with how he carried single-handedly the Lakers&rsquo; defense, while Adebayo had the immense burden of playing all the defensive schemes in Miami. Ultimately, it ended up with Gobert with the way he lifted a good defensive team to the best in the league, manning that paint and being that anchor that holds all of the pieces together.

Gobert, Wembanyama, Davis, and Adebayo are no-brainers considering their defensive impact for each of their teams, while Jones takes the last spot in the 1st team for his ability to disrupt offenses as well as guarding each team&rsquo;s best player night in and night out for the Pelicans.&nbsp;
The second team features White (most blocks for a guard), Suggs and Isaac (best defensive players for the 4th best defense in the league, helping to lead the Magic back to the playoffs), McDaniels (best wing defender for the best defense in the league), and the perennial all-defense player Caruso who brings it in defensively every game.
Rookie of the Year: Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio Spurs
(Runner-up: Chet Holmgren)
Notes: Despite Holmgren having far and away the better team success, there&rsquo;s no denying Wembanyama&rsquo;s greatness in his rookie year. The French phenom has transcended the game both figuratively and on the eye test &ndash; he is simply a generational talent who is going to take over the league soon. Holmgren got off to a hot start in the first two months of the season but since January, Wembanyama has locked up the award for himself with out-of-the-world numbers for a rookie. He was dubbed as the best prospect since LeBron James and now he is well on his way to being one of the greatest of all time if he remains healthy after a historic rookie season.
All-Rookie Team:
1st Team - Victor Wembanyama, Chet Holmgren, Brandon Miller, Jaime Jaquez Jr., GG Jackson
2nd Team - Ausar Thompson, Amen Thompson, Keyonte George, Brandin Podziemski, Trayce Jackson-Davis
Notes: There were several names to choose from here, and it felt hard to cut some of them here. Jordan Hawkins of the Pelicans has had a good start to the year when the team had all those injuries paving the way for him to play early into the season but has seen the bench since as NOLA got healthier and players came back; Cason Wallace had such a good shooting year off the bench for the No.1 seeded Thunder despite shooting being labeled by scouts as his biggest weakness coming into the NBA; Dereck Lively II being center that Luka Doncic needed and fit well with by catching all those lobs and helping the Mavs&rsquo; defense this season big time; No.2 overall pick Scoot Henderson had a good close to his rookie year.
All in all, these 10 rookies have felt like the best rookies in terms of production, opportunity, and narratives surrounding them. Of course, Wembanyama and Holmgren are automatic locks; Miller has been the best player in Charlotte without LaMelo Ball and Mark Williams; Jaquez is a vital piece off the bench for Erik Spoelstra&rsquo;s playoff-bound Heat team; and GG Jackson becoming a legit NBA scorer despite being the youngest player in the league to round out the first team.
The Thompson twins have just been defensive monsters ever since stepping foot in the league; George playing point guard at Utah has turned some heads and he has stepped up with the opportunity given to him; while Podziemski and Jackson-Davis have arguably been rotational pieces to the Warriors despite being rookies and has contributed a lot to them finding a way to fit in a complex team.
Coach of the Year: Mark Daigneault, Oklahoma City Thunder
(Runner-ups: Chris Finch, Jamahl Mosley)
Notes: There have been so many good coaches this season that have elevated their teams to good records, say Ime Udoka of the Houston Rockets and Tom Thibodeau from the New York Knicks. But my Coach of the Year pick goes to Mark Daigneault of the OKC Thunder because this award tends to favor the expectations set for a team before the start of the season. The Thunder weren&rsquo;t supposed to be this good this season, but Daigneault catapulted them into one of the best teams not just in the West but the entire NBA. The evidence is written on the wall: No.1 in the West despite being the second youngest team in the league; having a top 5 ranking on both offense and defense and no.2 overall net rating. Finch and Mosley take the runner-up spots with the work they had to lift both the Timberwolves and the Magic to being top 4 seeds in their conferences as well as having top-rated defenses in the league.
Clutch Player of the Year: Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors
(Runner-ups: DeMar DeRozan, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander)
Notes: Another tough and close race, but ultimately it goes to Curry. Despite the Warriors&rsquo; so-so record, Curry had the most clutch time points, shot 50% from the field, and 46% from three in clutch time. Curry had the most threes than anyone in crunch time &ndash; being just the incredible clutch-time performer that he is &ndash; and always been.
All-NBA Team:
1st Team - Nikola Jokic, Luka Doncic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jayson Tatum
2nd Team - Jalen Brunson, Kevin Durant, Anthony Davis, Anthony Edwards, LeBron James
3rd Team - Stephen Curry, Domantas Sabonis, Kawhi Leonard, Devin Booker, Tyrese Haliburton
Notes: With Jalen Brunson carrying the Knicks to a second seed in the East playing without Julius Randle since January, it was incredibly hard to leave him off the 1st team. However, by the slightest of margins, I gave the nod to Tatum for being the best player on the best team in the league by a wide margin.
All the other picks were pretty explanatory, with the top 4 in the MVP race in Jokic, Doncic, SGA, and Giannis all expected to be first-teamers. The second team kind of got tougher besides Brunson, with legends Durant and James making the list because of the seasons they had leading their team as well as playing their most regular season game in years. Rounding out the second team were Edwards and Davis, two stars with the biggest impacts on their teams in the tough Western Conference.
The third team is actually a toss-up with a lot of good cases from the league all around, but ultimately I went with Curry, Sabonis, Leonard, Booker, and Haliburton.
Most Valuable Player: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander&nbsp;
(Runners-up: Nikola Jokic, Luka Doncic; Honorable mention: Giannis Antetokounmpo)
Perhaps the closest race out of all the awards, all three players here are each deserving with their narratives and the numbers that support each of their cases. You can never go wrong picking one over the other, so it came down to personal opinion on who I thought had the strongest case this season. His case?
-Leading the second youngest team in the league to No.1 in the West
-3-1 series vs Denver
-3-1 series vs Dallas
-First player since Steph and MJ to average 30/5/5 in a season with 2+ steals
-Second in defensive net rating for guards
One could make the argument for Nikola Jokic being the best player in the world having better numbers than his two MVP seasons while Luka Doncic had one of the best seasons statistically in all facets of the game, but there&rsquo;s no denying SGA&rsquo;s strong case as well given the expectations for this young Thunder team.

I take pride in my defense. I&rsquo;ve always enjoyed guarding the best scorer on the other team. I look forward to it. When I&rsquo;m assigned one of those match-ups, I know it&rsquo;s gonna be a fun night.
In my 13 years as an NBA player, I guarded many perennial All-Stars and future Hall-of-Famers. I&rsquo;m talking about the best of the best. I tried to contain them and get under their skin. I'd constantly poke my hands in to try to get a pick or at least throw off their rhythm. If I could get scorers to think and worry about my hands, that was a win for me. But for these guys, it was basically impossible. They were always locked in.
What is it like to guard these superstars? In part one, I shared <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/nba-corey-brewer-guarding-stars-lebron-james-giannis-antetokounmpo-james-harden-kevin-durant-stephen-curry-damian-lillard-russell-westbrook-kawhi-leonard-carmelo-anthony" target="_blank" rel="noopener">my experiences defending current elite scorers</a>. Today, I&rsquo;ll break down some of the retired legends that I matched up against:
Kobe Bryant
You never forget the first time you played against Kobe Bryant. For me, it was in my rookie year in Minnesota and he dropped 30 on us. When he stepped on the court, just his swag, his whole demeanor, made me feel like, &ldquo;Damn, this is Kobe Bryant!&rdquo;&nbsp;
Kobe was a nightmare to guard. Seriously. He knew what he wanted to do, and I couldn't make him do anything different. It was like the game was a script to him; it was really a Hollywood script, and he was going to put me in his movie. I can&rsquo;t explain it any other way except that I was in Kobe&rsquo;s movie. When I was in the mid-post with him, he knew what he was about to do. It was: &ldquo;I'm gonna fake left and then fade over my right shoulder,&rdquo; or, &ldquo;I'm gonna pump-fake you, make you foul me and get the and-one,&rdquo; or &ldquo;I&rsquo;m gonna pump fake and go dunk on your head.&rdquo; He had a plan and he executed it. He was amazing, man. Unbelievable. Kobe would make so many difficult shots and I&rsquo;d just be amazed.

He was a no-nonsense killer, and that's why I'm glad I got to play him in the playoffs a couple of times. Just to see him in that environment, playing at that level and being the way he is on the basketball court, that's why everybody respects him so much. He was that good, and he was really a student of the game. That's why he played for 20 years. He worked his tail off, and he was that good for so long because he was such a hard worker in all the nuances and technical aspects of the game. He was everything. He was relentless and steadfast in his plan: from his footwork to his bank shots to getting fouled--everything he did, I knew he had thought about it, worked on it and watched film on it. He loved the game. That's why Kobe Bryant was Kobe Bryant. Rest in Peace.
Dirk Nowitzki
I actually used to get to guard Dirk a lot. Dirk's tough, man -- the one-leggers! He's a "footer" meaning he's at least 7 feet tall, so I'm not gonna block his shot, and I'm not gonna speed him up no matter what. Like Kobe, he had a plan and I just hoped I could try to do something that made him get out of a rhythm. When I guarded Dirk, I just tried to deny him in his favorite spots or front the post. I just tried to be a little 6-9 pest. It felt like the only thing I could do guarding Dirk was be a nuisance because when he got the ball, it was over. He might miss, but he was typically going to get the shots he wanted. If I could just force him to shoot 12 inches away from where he most wanted to go, I did my job.&nbsp;
Dirk is one of the best scorers I've seen in the NBA. Ever. I played with him in 2011, when he had that incredible postseason and got us a Championship ring when we defeated the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals. It didn&rsquo;t matter who they put out there, he wasn't going to be stopped during our run to the championship.&nbsp;

Dirk is for sure the reason we have all these stretch-fours now. The trail three, that was his bread and butter! At the time, bigs used to run back into the paint, but Dirk Nowitzki trailed in, stopped at the three-point line and let it fly -- and it would splash. Dirk was a bad boy, man.&nbsp;
While we all revel in how he shot the ball, it was the tireless work he put into his craft that made him that kind of shooter. He worked on the one-leg jumper so much. It wasn&rsquo;t just some random move he would do sometimes; he worked on it a lot, and that's why he made so many and why it became his go-to. He changed the game and evolved the big man position we all see now.&nbsp;
Dwyane Wade
I hated guarding D-Wade because his pump fake was just unbelievable. He was so athletic. Going to the rim, he&rsquo;d dunk on people. Then he'd go and just stop on a dime, pump fake, then draw a foul. I knew his plan so I'd try not to foul him, but that&rsquo;s when he had me right where he wanted--not as aggressive as I normally am. He was just tough with the way he approached the game, the way he played the game and how good he was at getting to the basket and finishing.&nbsp;

And, seriously, Dwyane Wade's pump fake has to be up there as one of the greatest ever. I hated that pump fake. My goal there was just to stay down and make him shoot a jump shot over me. I feel like if I did that, I did my job -- which, a lot of times, it still wasn't good enough. But hey, I did my job; I'd rather him pump fake, shoot a jump shot and make it than him pump fake and draw a foul or dunk on me or my teammate -- because his dunks would always get his team and the crowd going. My job wasn't to stop scorers like him, it was to get them to take shots they were less likely to make than they otherwise would if I didn't do my job. Fouling was the worst thing I could do--most scorers shoot free throws well.&nbsp;
Gilbert Arenas
If Gilbert Arenas didn&rsquo;t get hurt, we&rsquo;d be talking about him on a different level. I feel like people don't realize how good he was and how well he played during his prime. When he got that big contract, he deserved it. He just got hurt and had bad luck. That's all you can say. But he was a tough guard with the way he could shoot it.&nbsp;
I wanted him to pass. I would try to send him to my help and get the ball out of his hands because when he had that ball in his hands, he could get going. They didn't call him "Hibachi" for nothing! When he got going, he got going. He heated up fast when his confidence soared.
Gilbert Arenas was actually one of the first dudes to be coming off the pick-and-roll and pull it from deep. He used to pull from deep, and he had the ball on a string; when he went to the basket, that was his thing. Gilbert was tough, and I feel like if he didn't get hurt, we're talking about him in a different sense. But I have to show him love because he was that good.
Tracy McGrady
I caught T-Mac toward the end of his time with the Houston Rockets. T-Mac was tough. I remember the first time I played T-Mac, he'd catch it and he'd jab step. He'd jab me off, and it was a thing of beauty. I&rsquo;d be thinking, &ldquo;What is he gonna do? Is he gonna pull up? Is he gonna try to get by me?&rdquo; His jab step was one of the best ever. I wish I could&rsquo;ve faced off against T-Mac more.

For decades, the United States dominated on the hardwood. Now, that&rsquo;s changing.
Today, the U.S. still produces some of the best players in the world and certainly has the deepest talent pool, but other countries have closed the gap considerably. International superstars have taken the league by storm.
With the success of players like Giannis Antetokounmpo (Greece), Nikola Jokic (Serbia), Joel Embiid (Cameroon), Luka Dončić (Slovenia) and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Canada), it's no surprise that people are high on international players. 
Antetokounmpo, Jokic and Embiid have combined for the last five Most Valuable Player awards, and four of the last six Defensive Player of the Year awards have gone to foreign players (Giannis and Rudy Gobert). Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks won the 2021 NBA championship, and now Jokic and the Denver Nuggets are the reigning champs.&nbsp;
Whether it&rsquo;s the FIBA Basketball World Cup or in the NBA, international players are often beating their United States counterparts.&nbsp;
Americans have been outshined as of late, but the U.S. continues to produce some of the very best players in the world. Veteran superstars like LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Damian Lillard, Kawhi Leonard, Paul George and Kyrie Irving continue to excel, while younger studs like Jayson Tatum, Devin Booker, Ja Morant, Donovan Mitchell, Zion Williamson, LaMelo Ball, Tyrese Haliburton, Anthony Edwards, are still realizing their full potential and could challenge the influx of international competition. However, Victor Wembanyama (France) enters the 2023-24 season as the most highly anticipated rookie since LeBron James.
Now, let's take a look at the numbers. A year ago, Basketball News&rsquo; Alex Kennedy <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/an-inside-look-at-how-international-players-are-taking-over-the-nba">talked with Troy Justice,</a> the NBA&rsquo;s vice president, head of international basketball development about the international takeover on basketball&rsquo;s biggest stages.
&ldquo;Thirty years ago, there were only 23 international players. Now, we have 121. And to be real honest, I think we're only scratching the surface in terms of not only talent identification but just the development of the game globally,&rdquo; Justice said. &ldquo;So, it's amazing.&rdquo;
Of the 537 active NBA players, 128 are from outside the United States (just under 25%). International players received 88% of the votes in the 2022-23 MVP race, with Embiid, Jokic and Antetokounmpo garnering 84% combined. Of the top-eight vote-getters, only Tatum and Mitchell were American.
And that&rsquo;s not just a one-off. You have to go back to the 2020-21 NBA season to find an American player in the top-three of MVP voting, which was Curry at third (closely followed by Giannis). The last American player to win the MVP award was James Harden in 2017-18. Interestingly, there were no international players in the top-five of MVP voting that year, although Antetokounmpo barely missed out.
Also, following that season, the Larry O&rsquo;Brien trophy has been very much up for grabs. Previously, the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors were the perennial NBA Finals matchup and no other teams really came close. LeBron and Steph were the NBA&rsquo;s poster boys, competing for a ring every year. We hadn&rsquo;t seen an international superstar lead his team to a title since Dirk Nowitzki defeated LeBron, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in 2011.
There are many reasons for this championship diversity &ndash; with five different winners in the past five years &ndash; but a big factor is the emergence of these international juggernauts like Jokic and Antetokounmpo. However, it&rsquo;s worth noting that teams with American superstars won three-out-of-five of these championships, led by Kawhi, LeBron and Steph, respectively.
The NBA landscape is volatile and this season will be telling. Will an international player win the MVP award for a sixth-straight time? Which team will be standing after the smoke clears at the end? Can Jokic and the Nuggets repeat? Will Giannis and Dame bring another title to Milwaukee? Or will one of the other contenders win it all?
American players are no doubt still some of the best in the sport and are well ahead in terms of numbers. But, particularly at the top, international players have fully closed the gap and have begun building their own disparity.&nbsp;

Look, whenever a team has been able to land LeBron in free agency, it has led to at least one championship and been a big deal. In 2018, it was the Los Angeles Lakers who won the LeBron sweepstakes. James' arrival instantly restored hope and expectations for the franchise, as he brought his unparalleled basketball prowess, leadership and championship pedigree to a team in need of rejuvenation. Beyond the on-court success, James' influence off the court revitalized the Lakers' culture, fostering a winning mentality and attracting other marquee players to join him in Los Angeles (particularly Anthony Davis). James and Davis would lead the Lakers to a championship in 2020, and they continue to go on deep playoff runs to this day.
SUNS SIGN STEVE NASH, 2004
When Steve Nash returned to the Phoenix Suns in 2004, few could have predicted the revolution he would ignite. MIAMI (AP) &mdash; Heat coach Erik Spoelstra walked into the postgame interview room, a cup of a celebratory beverage in his hand, took a seat and began explaining how difficult the journey has been for Heat.
The regular season was a struggle. They needed to survive the play-in. They were three minutes away from going home before the playoffs even started, needing a rally just to earn the right to play top-seeded Milwaukee.
All forgotten. They&rsquo;re in the NBA&rsquo;s final four &mdash; getting there as a No. 8 seed.
Jimmy Butler scored 24 points, Bam Adebayo added 23 and the Heat are headed back to the Eastern Conference finals after topping the New York Knicks 96-92 in Game 6 on Friday night.
&ldquo;It is really frickin&rsquo; hard to get to the Eastern Conference finals,&rdquo; Spoelstra said.
Maybe for some franchises. Not for Miami. The Heat are headed there for the 10th time overall, the seventh time in the last 13 years and the third time in the past four seasons. They&rsquo;ll play Game 1 at either Boston or Philadelphia on Wednesday; those teams will decide their East semifinal series Sunday.
Max Strus scored 14 points and Kyle Lowry had 11 points and nine assists for the Heat. They&rsquo;re the second No. 8 seed in NBA history to make the conference finals &mdash; joining the Knicks, who pulled it off in 1999.
Jalen Brunson was spectacular for New York, scoring 41 points on 14-for-22 shooting. But his teammates combined for only 51 points &mdash; Julius Randle had 15 and RJ Barrett 11 on 1-for-10 shooting. Josh Hart also had 11 points for the Knicks.
&ldquo;Congratulations to the Heat, to the organization, to the coaching staff, Spo and Pat Riley and all their players,&rdquo; Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said. &ldquo;They played tough in this series and hats off to them. But I&rsquo;m proud of our guys. There&rsquo;s always disappointment in the end of the season and in the end, there&rsquo;ll be one team standing. ... Proud of the way this team worked all year.&rdquo;
It was dicey at the end, but Miami survived. Gabe Vincent was called for a flagrant-1 against Brunson with just under a minute left, starting a run where the Knicks scored four points in 4.6 seconds.
Brunson made the free throws, Hart added a layup and a 92-86 lead was down to 92-90.
The Knicks got a stop at the other end, but never got a shot off on the next possession. Lowry knocked the ball away for a steal, Butler made two free throws with 14.4 seconds left and the countdown back to the conference finals was on.
&ldquo;It was a battle,&rdquo; Lowry said. &ldquo;A Tom Thibodeau-coached team, they&rsquo;re always going to play hard. ... This was a grind and we found a way.&rdquo;
Miami was whistled for four fouls in the first 2:15 of the fourth quarter, setting the tone for New York to keep getting to the line throughout the final period.
The Knicks tied it early in the third, but missed 10 other field-goal attempts in the second half &mdash; along with two free throws &mdash; that would have pulled New York into a tie or given it the lead.
Brunson had 22 points in the first half, tying his third-most before intermission in any game this season &ndash; and his most ever by halftime of a playoff game. He had 15 in the first quarter when the Knicks came out flying to grab early control.
New York led 14 in the opening quarter, and Miami never led by more than two in the first 24 minutes. But it was Miami with the lead at the half, going up 51-50 by the break in large part because it finally kept New York off the line.
The Knicks made 11 free throws in the first quarter &mdash; the most by any Heat opponent this season and tying the fourth-most against Miami in an opening period over the last decade. But they didn&rsquo;t even get to the line in the final 15:16 of the half.
The score to that point: Knicks 29, Heat 17. The score over the rest of the half: Heat 34, Knicks 21. And the lead never changed hands again.
&ldquo;We&rsquo;ve got guys that just want it,&rdquo; Lowry said.

Knicks: Brunson and Quentin Grimes played all 48 minutes of Game 5, but that was quickly off the table in Game 6. Heat top Knicks 96-92 in Game 6, advance to Conference Finals

Exactly two months ago, the Dallas Mavericks were the fourth seed in the Western Conference and all eyes were on them after their blockbuster acquisition of Kyrie Irving.
The Mavericks thought they'd found the perfect co-star for Luka Doncic, someone who could help them make another deep playoff run after advancing to the Western Conference Finals the year before.
However, on Friday night, the Mavericks were officially eliminated from the postseason after opting to sit Irving, Christian Wood, Josh Green, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Maxi Kleber against the Chicago Bulls, and resting Doncic after the first quarter.&nbsp;
Dallas prioritized their draft pick over potentially making the play-in, as they owe their first-round pick to the New York Knicks (as part of the Kristaps Porzingis trade) but it's top-10 protected, and losing to the Bulls gave Dallas the 10th-best lottery odds in the league.
While much of the conversation about the Mavericks&rsquo; uncertain future has centered around Irving&rsquo;s upcoming free agency and whether Jason Kidd will return as head coach, ESPN&rsquo;s Tim MacMahon <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/36111588/the-end-dallas-mavericks-season-marks-beginning-franchise-altering-questions" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reports</a> that sources within the Mavericks fear that "Doncic, who publicly and privately expressed extreme frustration this season, could consider requesting a trade as soon as the summer of 2024 if Dallas doesn&rsquo;t make significant progress by then.&rdquo;
MacMahon <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/36111588/the-end-dallas-mavericks-season-marks-beginning-franchise-altering-questions" target="_blank" rel="noopener">adds</a> that &ldquo;there&rsquo;s a strong sense of urgency within the organization to expedite the process before Doncic loses faith in the Mavs&rsquo; ability to build a contender around him.&rdquo;
While the Mavs have Doncic on a five-year, $215 million supermax contract, he could still request a trade in the near future if he's unhappy. There&rsquo;s no question that Doncic was frustrated throughout this season.
"I think you can see it with me on the court," Doncic said following a disappointing loss to the shorthanded Charlotte Hornets last month. "Sometimes, I don't feel it's me. I'm just being out there. I used to have really fun, smiling on the court, but it's just been so frustrating for a lot of reasons, not just basketball."

Recently, Doncic admitted that the Mavs&rsquo; chemistry declined &ldquo;a lot&rdquo; from last season to this year, while acknowledging that losing Jalen Brunson in free agency played a significant role in the team&rsquo;s drop off.&nbsp;
The hope was that Irving could help fill the hole left by Brunson's departure and give Dallas the perfect running mate for Doncic. However, as MacMahon <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/36111588/the-end-dallas-mavericks-season-marks-beginning-franchise-altering-questions" target="_blank" rel="noopener">noted</a>, the Mavs went 5-11 when Doncic and Irving were both in the lineup, the worst winning percentage (.313) that a pair of All-Star teammates have posted since the NBA-ABA merger in 1976-77.
Dallas enters this offseason with some big decisions to make. They have a number of key players hitting unrestricted free agency including Irving, Wood and Dwight Powell. Mark Cuban told reporters that the priority is to keep Irving long-term.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s not Kyrie or bust, but we want to keep him,&rdquo; Cuban <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/mavs-cuban-says-keeping-irving-is-priority-supports-kidd" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. &ldquo;I want him to stay for sure, and I think we have a good shot. I think he&rsquo;s happy here. He told me he&rsquo;s happy here.&rdquo;
Cuban also stressed that the team will be looking to add defenders over the summer, so they can be more competitive on that side of the floor.
&ldquo;We&rsquo;ve got the best offensive rating, I think, with those two guys when they play together,&rdquo; Cuban said. &ldquo;We could not find a way to get stops in close games. I don&rsquo;t think you can point to any one thing, but we&rsquo;ll have to make changes, obviously, to be able to get better defensively.&rdquo;
While there&rsquo;s been plenty of speculation that the Mavs may replace Kidd, Cuban told reporters that he doesn&rsquo;t blame Kidd for the team&rsquo;s struggles, so perhaps a coaching change isn&rsquo;t coming.
&ldquo;I don&rsquo;t think it&rsquo;s J-Kidd&rsquo;s problem that we didn&rsquo;t have an identity,&rdquo; Cuban <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/mavs-cuban-says-keeping-irving-is-priority-supports-kidd" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. &ldquo;The game changed in ways we didn&rsquo;t expect it to change. So I blew it. It was on me personally because the game changed in terms of the &lsquo;take&rsquo; fouls and the speed of the game and where you need to be defensively.&rdquo;
As for Doncic&rsquo;s future, it remains to be seen if the Mavericks can put the right pieces around him and become a perennial contender. Several days ago, Cuban was asked about Doncic&rsquo;s long-term optimism and whether he&rsquo;ll be the new Dirk Nowitzki, who spent 21 seasons with the Mavs.
&ldquo;Players don&rsquo;t talk like that, &lsquo;Hey, I&rsquo;ll be here for the next 17 years,&rsquo;&rdquo; Cuban <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/mavs-cuban-says-keeping-irving-is-priority-supports-kidd" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. &ldquo;He&rsquo;d like to be here the whole time, but we&rsquo;ve got to earn that.&rdquo;

Mavs fear Luka Doncic may request trade unless they build contender

HOUSTON (AP) &mdash; The transfer portal. Name, image and likeness deals. Sixth-year seniors. Conference realignment. The ever-shifting prospects of the one-and-done rule.
The once semipredictable ground that underpinned college basketball has been changing at lightning speed over the past 24 months, leaving coaches and their bosses scrambling to adjust to whatever comes next.
The NCAA Tournament closes out Monday when UConn plays San Diego State, and will go down as one of the most unpredictable ever. Unanswered is the question of whether the shifting landscape in college sports was the reason for all bracket madness or simply background noise for an event that is always hard to handicap.
Either way, things are changing and coaches are trying to adjust on the fly.
&ldquo;These might be some of the greatest challenges we&rsquo;re facing with the portal and NIL and just lack of direction and rules and regulations,&rdquo; said Mark Few of Gonzaga, a perennial powerhouse that has reached the Sweet 16 in eight straight seasons.
The four teams that made it to Houston &mdash; Florida Atlantic and Miami saw their seasons end Saturday &mdash; got here in part because they adapted quickly. All four added players from the transfer portal, some of whom were given an extra year of eligibility due to the pandemic, and some of whom were lured by the promise of sponsorship money under the loosely regulated NIL system.&nbsp;
Very few coaches want to go on record saying that allowing players to earn money through NIL or to freely move around in a billion-dollar business that imposes no such restrictions on the coaches themselves is a bad thing.
Few also want to touch on the bottom line of conference realignment, which is placing familiar schools in strange places &mdash; Texas in the Southeastern Conference and UCLA and USC in the Big Ten &mdash; in the service of generating more revenue.
And none want to be painted as dinosaurs who don&rsquo;t believe players should share in the game&rsquo;s considerable financial windfall.
Some, however, concede they are uneasy about the implications of all this.
&ldquo;I wish someone would understand the effect of the system,&rdquo; Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton said. &ldquo;The story is the number of kids who have been adversely affected by the climate as it is today.&rdquo;
Hamilton is not the only coach concerned by a recent NCAA study that showed 43% of Division I athletes who enter the transfer portal &mdash; taking advantage of their newfound ability to switch schools without having to sit out a year &mdash; end up without a place to play.
&ldquo;Is it great that 43% of young people decided to remove themselves from an experience of a lifetime?&rdquo; said UMass coach Frank Martin. &ldquo;People talk about a lot of the great things happening for young students now, but nobody really talks about that.&rdquo;
Now, the one-and-done rule, which used to be considered one of the biggest destabilizers in college sports, is barely a blip on the radar. For most of the past year, the NBA had made it a priority to eliminate the 17-year-old rule from the upcoming collective bargaining agreement. But that got scuttled at the last minute, and the rule will remain.
&ldquo;However it all shakes out, what I want is whatever is best for the kids,&rdquo; said Kentucky coach John Calipari, who for years has embraced the one-and-done system.
Calipari said he&rsquo;s more concerned about &ldquo;27-year-olds playing against 19-year-olds.&rdquo;
&ldquo;I think that&rsquo;s an issue that we&rsquo;re going to have to deal with that we&rsquo;re totally avoiding,&rdquo; he said.
The extra year of eligibility granted because of COVID-19, combined with redshirt years being handed out for varying reasons, has, indeed, extended some players&rsquo; careers into their mid-20s.
Exhibit A: Since the NBA trade deadline last month, the Houston Cougars, who came into the tournament as a No. 1 seed and were ousted in the Sweet 16, had a starting five that was older than the starters for NBA&rsquo;s rebuilding Houston Rockets.
Exhibit B: Including 25-year-old guard Adam Seiko, San Diego State has four key contributors who are in their fifth or sixth year of college.
The NCAA is taking somewhat of a passive approach to all of the issues. It has largely refused to get into the regulation of NIL deals, instead leaving it to state governments to decide. Last week, Congress held the latest in a series of hearings that resolved nothing, even as the NCAA asks for a national standard.
&ldquo;I think one athletic director said that the only truth about NIL is that everybody lies,&rdquo; the NCAA&rsquo;s new president, Charlie Baker, said in a brief interview at the Final Four.
Baker would like to see the creation of a registry of contracts, financial literacy programs for families, a certification process for agents and a uniform standard contract for NIL deals.
For now, though, NIL and the portal have produced a free-for-all.
It played out at FAU, where coach Dusty May said some of his players were being approached while the team was in the middle of its run.
In another instance, after a run to the Sweet 16 last season, Maryland&rsquo;s women lost five players, including two who made it to the Final Four with their new teams this year. (The Terps still made the Elite Eight this year.)
Before the tournament started, Belmont women&rsquo;s coach Jamey Givens, whose Bruins missed the tournament after upsetting Oregon in the first round, last year put a fine point on it, tweeting good luck to all the teams in the tournament &mdash; &ldquo;except for those who have been actively recruiting off our roster all spring.&rdquo;
Martin, a former high school math teacher who got fired at South Carolina five seasons after reaching the Final Four, has long leaned into the importance of athletes getting an education. He is also a realist and an optimist, trying to thread the needle in a rapidly changing landscape.
&ldquo;For the most part, we tend to be fairly intelligent people who adapt,&rdquo; he said, &ldquo;and we&rsquo;ll figure it out, and we&rsquo;ll adapt, and we&rsquo;ll grow.&rdquo;

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (AP) &mdash; Tobin Anderson is leaving NCAA Cinderella FDU after one story-book season and replacing Rick Pitino at Iona.
Iona athletic director Matt Glovaski announced the hiring on Tuesday, just a day after Pitino left to take the job at St. John&rsquo;s of the Big East Conference.
Anderson led the No. 16 seeded Knights to a win over No. 1 Purdue in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament last week, only the second time a No. 16 seed has knocked off a top-seeded team. UMBC beat No. 1 Virginia in 2018.
&ldquo;Iona University represents everything my family and I were looking for in a school, a basketball program and a campus atmosphere,&rdquo; Anderson said in a statement. &ldquo;Our goal is to build upon the tremendous tradition of Iona basketball and elevate the program to greater heights.&rdquo;
Iona of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference was knocked out of this year&rsquo;s tournament by UConn on Friday.
&ldquo;We have long known him to be a fantastic coach and an even better person,&rdquo; Glovaski said. &ldquo;Now, with his team&rsquo;s impressive run in the NCAA tournament, everyone paying attention to March Madness also knows this. We&rsquo;re delighted that he will be at the helm of our men&rsquo;s basketball program.&rdquo;
Anderson led FDU to a 21-16 overall record and went 10-6 in Northeast Conference play. The Knights lost to Merrimack in the conference title game, but got the NCAA berth because Merrimack was ineligible to compete as a transitioning school from Division II.
FDU, one of the shorter teams in the 68-team field, beat Texas Southern in a First Four game and followed that with the upset over Purdue. Florida Atlantic knocked them out of the tournament on Sunday.
FDU had a 4-22 record in 2021-22. Anderson was hired after running a successful program at St. Thomas Aquinas, located less than 25 miles from Iona&rsquo;s New Rochelle campus. In nine seasons, he turned the team into a perennial Top 25 program in Division II after inheriting a team that won just five games prior to his hire.
Anderson got his first taste of Division I coaching, serving as an assistant at Siena for two seasons from 2011&ndash;2013. Before his time at Siena, Anderson was a head coach at the Division III level at Hamilton College and Clarkson University in upstate New York. He worked as an assistant at Clarkson and Le Moyne College.
Anderson graduated from Wesleyan University in 1995.

The final week of the regular season is here, the calendar rounding toward March Madness.
A handful of regular-season titles are already wrapped up. Several are still up in the air.
Top-ranked Houston clinched the American Athletic Conference crown, earning at least a share for the fourth time in five years. No. 4 UCLA has its first Pac-12 championship since 2012-13.
No. 10 Gonzaga and No. 17 Saint Mary&rsquo;s shared the West Coast Conference title after the Zags&rsquo; 77-68 win last weekend. They could meet again in the WCC championship game March 7.
The rest of the major conferences will go down to the wire. A look at the regular-season titles still up for grabs in this week&rsquo;s AP Top 25:
ACC
The Atlantic Coast Conference has turned on its head as perennial powers like North Carolina and Duke have not lived up to expectations.
No. 25 Pittsburgh has been the biggest surprise.
Picked to finish 14th out of 15 teams in the preseason poll, the Panthers enter the final week of the regular season with a half-game lead over No. 16 Miami at 14-4 in conference play.
Pitt (21-8) moved into the AP Top 25 this week for the first time since 2016. The Panthers can clinch their first ACC regular-season title since joining the league in 2013 with wins over Notre Dame on Wednesday and Miami on Saturday.
The Hurricanes (23-6, 14-5), another surprise ACC team, can clinch at least a share of the title with a win over Pittsburgh.
No. 13 Virginia (21-6, 13-5) and Clemson (21-8, 13-5) are still in the mix to share the crown by winning both games this week if Pitt loses twice. One will be eliminated from contention when the Cavaliers and Tigers play each other on Tuesday.
BIG 12
Another season, another Kansas run at a Big 12 title.
The No. 3 Jayhawks (24-5, 12-4) have won six straight games and received eight first-place votes in this week&rsquo;s AP Top 25.
Kansas has a tough week ahead, facing Texas Tech on Tuesday and No. 9 Texas on Saturday. The Jayhawks pulled out a three-point win at Texas Tech earlier this season and beat the Longhorns by eight.
Texas (22-7, 11-5) is a game back with a matchup against No. 22 TCU on Wednesday. No. 7 Baylor is 1 1/2 games back after beating Oklahoma State on Monday night and closes the regular season at home against Iowa State on Saturday.
No. 11 Kansas State is two games behind the Jayhawks at 10-6, with games against Oklahoma on Wednesday and West Virginia on Saturday.
BIG TEN
No. 5 Purdue (24-5, 13-5) has a share of the Big Ten title and can clinch it outright with a win over Wisconsin on Thursday or Illinois on Sunday.
No. 15 Indiana, which beat Purdue twice this season, No. 21 Maryland, Northwestern and Michigan are all two games behind the Boilermakers at 11-7.
SEC
No. 2 Alabama (25-4, 15-1) has navigated off-court issues to claim a share of the Southeastern Conference title. The Crimson Tide have opportunities to clinch outright against Auburn on Wednesday and No. 24 Texas A&amp;M on Saturday.
Alabama has a two-game lead over the Aggies (21-8, 13-3).
BIG EAST
No. 6 Marquette (23-6, 15-3) has its highest ranking since 1977-78 and has secured a share of the Big East title. The Golden Eagles can clinch outright with a win over Butler on Tuesday or St. John&rsquo;s on Saturday.
No. 19 Xavier and No. 20 Providence are two games back at 13-5.
MOUNTAIN WEST
No. 18 San Diego State (23-5, 14-2) has a share of the Mountain West Conference title and can earn the outright championship Tuesday against Boise State or Saturday against Wyoming.
Boise State and Nevada are two games back at 12-4.

Conference championships on the line in season’s final week

NEW YORK (AP) &mdash; James Harden arrived in Brooklyn and predicted his partnership with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving would be &ldquo;&nbsp;scary hours.&rdquo;
It was over in a New York minute.
Not just that trio, but an entire era in Brooklyn.
It ended so quickly, in fact, that when Harden returns to Brooklyn on Saturday for the first time in the regular season, barely a year after he was traded to Philadelphia, he won&rsquo;t find either&nbsp;Durant&nbsp;or&nbsp;Irving&nbsp;waiting.
Now they&rsquo;re gone. Three superstars came, and one by one asked to be traded.
&ldquo;So it didn&rsquo;t work,&rdquo; general manager Sean Marks said. &ldquo;Some of that is through things we can control and that we can&rsquo;t control.&rdquo;
Durant was the last to leave, traded to Phoenix on Thursday. Irving was dealt to Dallas just days earlier.
Those two friends had decided to come to Brooklyn together in 2019. Harden joined them early in the 2020-21 season after a trade.
Durant and Harden had combined for seven scoring titles. All three were perennial All-Stars. The Nets were favored to finally win the championship they&rsquo;ve been chasing since joining the NBA.
&ldquo;We had James and we were supposed to be this super team,&rdquo; Irving said. &ldquo;We played very limited time together and there were a lot of injuries and things that took place. I would have liked to see that work for the long term, but there are no mistakes, no coincidences.&rdquo;
Nor was there anything close to a championship.
There were illness and injuries, so sometimes they just couldn&rsquo;t play.
In Irving&rsquo;s case, sometimes he just wouldn&rsquo;t.
The bottom line is Durant, Irving and Harden played just 16 games together, winning one playoff series.
&ldquo;We&rsquo;ve had a lot of frustration here with not being able to get that group on the court consistently and seeing what it really looks like,&rdquo; Marks said. &ldquo;I think that&rsquo;s one of the biggest frustrations, where we really didn&rsquo;t see them and what they could look like.&rdquo;
It looked awesome at its peak. The Nets rolled past Boston in five games in the first round of the 2021 playoffs and overpowered Milwaukee in the first two games of the Eastern Conference semifinals.
But Harden strained his hamstring early in that series and Irving sprained his ankle in Game 4. The Bucks would rally and win the series with an overtime victory in Game 7 in Brooklyn and go on to win the championship.
The Nets figured to be favorites again in 2021-22, but the season was derailed right from the preseason when Irving refused to get vaccinated against the coronavirus. That meant he was ineligible to play in home games and the Nets at first said he wouldn&rsquo;t play at all until he could play in all their games.
Eventually, they brought him back in January to play on the road, but by then Harden had become disillusioned. He asked out and the Nets sent him to the 76ers in a deal that brought back Ben Simmons on Feb. 10, 2022.
After they were swept in the first round by Boston, Durant asked to be traded, frustrated in part by the Nets&rsquo; 5-16 record while he was sidelined by a sprained knee ligament. Around the same time, the Nets were refusing to give Irving a contract extension, having grown to question his reliability and forcing him to opt into the final year of his deal.
Durant eventually withdrew that, but they couldn&rsquo;t convince him to stay once Irving asked to be traded last week and the Nets quickly accommodated the point guard. Marks didn&rsquo;t want to say if Durant&rsquo;s desire to leave was due to Irving&rsquo;s departure.
&ldquo;I don&rsquo;t want to speak for the guys that are no longer here and why they left,&rdquo; Marks said.
The Nets still have a chance to be a playoff team. They are 33-22, fifth in the East, having gotten as high as second after ripping off an 18-2 stretch earlier this season when Durant and Irving enjoyed perhaps their best run together.
Mikal Bridges and Cam Johnson from Phoenix, and Spencer Dinwiddie and Dorian Finney-Smith from Dallas all should fit well with the Nets&rsquo; style of play under Jacque Vaughn and strengthen the team defensively. The draft picks they acquired along with them will provide options to shape the roster.

But it almost always takes having superstars on the roster to win an NBA title. The Nets had three.
&ldquo;For the last couple of years, we have been a team that you could have said if things go right &mdash; health, whatever, consistency, continuity on the court &mdash; they have a chance to win a championship, you know, purely from talent,&rdquo; Marks said.
Those days, and now Durant and Irving, are gone.
&ldquo;They&rsquo;re taking their talents elsewhere,&rdquo; Marks said, &ldquo;and like all other basketball fans, we&rsquo;ll be watching from afar. But our focus now is the guys in the locker room.&rdquo;

Perennial powers frontloaded the final poll of the 2012-13 college basketball season.
The top 10 included Louisville, Kansas, Duke, Indiana and Georgetown. Gonzaga was No. 1, at the start of its rise to the sport&rsquo;s upper echelon.
Flash forward 10 years and the AP Top 25 has a different look and feel.
New programs have risen to the top tier. Upsets have turned up the madness in March even more. A few bluebloods have lost a bit of their shine.
&ldquo;When you look at college basketball, there are some new bloods,&rdquo; said ESPN college basketball analyst and former coach Seth Greenberg. &ldquo;The bluebloods have an opportunity to reemerge as the season goes along, but we&rsquo;ve got some new bloods that are stepping up and making a statement.&rdquo;
Changes in the sport have led to the shuffling at the top.
Elite recruits have become more willing to eschew the traditional powers for smaller schools, spreading talent across the country. NIL deals have helped facilitate the shift, offering players opportunities they had never had before at those schools.
The transfer portal has allowed schools to replenish rosters quickly, pull in players who have experience and maturity that can fit in quickly. Some schools have invested more in facilities and coaches, adding to the allure of their programs.
The lasting effects of the pandemic &mdash; namely the extra year of eligibility &mdash; has also made teams older, adding cohesiveness and coachability.
&ldquo;Because of the COVID year, you have older, more experienced teams that have grown or been put together that have the maturity and understanding of what it takes to be successful,&rdquo; Greenberg said. &ldquo;But the big thing is new coaches in certain leagues have done a really good job of evaluating and recruiting.&rdquo;
The evidence is in the rankings.
Purdue has continued its rise under coach Matt Painter, spending six weeks atop the poll this season after earning the program&rsquo;s first No. 1 ranking a year ago. Tennessee has become a defensive menace, steadily rising until reaching No. 2 this week.
Kelvin Sampson has molded Houston into one of the nation&rsquo;s toughest teams to play. The Cougars went to the Final Four in 2021 and had two stints at No. 1 this season. No. 4 Alabama has shown it can play some basketball, too, reaching the Sweet 16 two years ago, climbing to No. 2 last week.
No. 7 Kansas State, picked to finish last in the Big 12, has made a quick rise under first-year coach Jerome Tang, a former long-time assistant at Baylor. No. 15 TCU is no longer known as just a football school, while schools like Florida Atlantic and Charleston have risen through the ranks.
No. 20 Clemson leads the ACC and Pittsburgh is just a game back. No. 18 Saint Mary&rsquo;s is ahead of No. 12 Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference.
On the flip side, North Carolina fell off quickly. A national finalist last season, the Tar Heels went from preseason No. 1 to out of the AP Top 25 in less than a month.
Kentucky struggled so much earlier in the season, fans were calling for coach John Calipari to be fired. Villanova dropped off precipitously in its first season since Jay Wright retired.
Of course there&rsquo;s still a month left in the regular season, so the middling bluebloods can still turn it around.
And once it gets to March Madness, the final chapter has still tended to be written by established powers.
Kansas won last year&rsquo;s national championship after an all-blueblood Final Four. ACC schools won three titles between 2015-19, wrapped around two Villanova championships.
But with those big-name champions, chaos has reigned with some of the biggest upsets and unexpected deep March runs the past few years.
Loyola Chicago reached the 2018 Final Four after Maryland-Baltimore County beat Virginia to become the first No. 16 seed to topple a No. 1 in NCAA Tournament history. Oral Roberts reached the Sweet 16 in 2021, Saint Peter&rsquo;s the Elite Eight a year ago.
The way this season has gone so far, college basketball fans could be in for the maddest March yet.

New bloods changing college hoops landscape

John Wall&rsquo;s two-year stint with the Houston Rockets finally came to an end last offseason, when the two sides agreed to a buyout &ndash; allowing the 32-year-old point guard to sign with the Los Angeles Clippers.&nbsp;
Now, in a candid conversation on the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMHTV1PpNWA" target="_blank" rel="noopener">&ldquo;Run Your Race&rdquo; podcast</a>, Wall opened up to Dallas Mavericks guard Theo Pinson and co-host AJ Richardson about his time in Houston and why the relationship soured.
As soon as Pinson brought up the Rockets, Wall said that his experience was &ldquo;trash.&rdquo;&nbsp;
&ldquo;Beyond trash. Because I'm going there thinking James [Harden] is going to be there, you know what I mean, when I get traded [there], but he already wants out," Wall said. "When I landed, I&rsquo;m about to go do my [press] conference and sh*t and he was like, &lsquo;Well, I'm on my way to Atlanta for Lil Baby&rsquo;s birthday.&rsquo; The f*ck?! [He&rsquo;s] talking about, &lsquo;You want to get on a jet with me?&rsquo; I just got traded here! I can&rsquo;t f*ck up. I gotta be on good terms. I don't know how the owner is, how the GM is, I don't know nothing. This ain't like I'm in D.C. If I was in D.C. I&rsquo;d be like, &lsquo;Hell yeah, we out!&rsquo; It&rsquo;s my show. But this ain&rsquo;t my show over here&hellip;
&ldquo;He don't come to training camp, none of that, so that news is all toxic. For me, I ain't played in two years. Mom passed, my Achilles, then COVID so I'm like, &lsquo;I don't give a f*ck who playing, I just want to hoop. That's it.&rsquo; I went there, worked my ass off and played.&rdquo;&nbsp;

Once Harden was traded to the Brooklyn Nets in January, it became clear that the Rockets were entering a rebuild. Wall claims that the team tanked to secure a top draft pick. Houston would win just 17 games that season, finishing with the NBA's worst record and ultimately landing the No. 2 overall pick (which they used on Jalen Green).
&ldquo;I mean, we lost 20 in a row; we was trying to lose on purpose &ndash; tanking,&rdquo; Wall said. &ldquo;Like, we started starting someone named Justin Patton! This is how our starting line-up was: me, David Nwaba, Jae'Sean Tate, Justin Patton and somebody else. I'm like, well, who the f*ck can I win a game with, with this sh*t?&rdquo;
At that point, Wall said he focused on mentoring the team's young core &ndash; explaining that this situation wasn&rsquo;t normal and that they shouldn&rsquo;t get used to losing or their bad habits.
"I always wanted to teach them like, &lsquo;Don't get used to this sh*t, this is not how the NBA is. It&rsquo;s just a bad organization right now.&rsquo; Like, they got to fix some sh*t around,&rdquo; Wall said. &ldquo;I&rsquo;d always talk to Jalen Green, Kevin Porter, KJ [Martin], like, &lsquo;Don't get adjusted to this losing sh*t, this is not how the league is.&rsquo; But at the same time, I had to tell them like, &rsquo;The sh*t y&rsquo;all are getting away with over here, if you go to any other teams, you would be out of the f*cking league! You wouldn't play!&rsquo; I'm trying to explain that to them because they think it's sweet. But I'm like, &lsquo;If you ever get traded or go somewhere else, you&rsquo;re going to be like, &lsquo;This motherf*cker was right!&rsquo;&rdquo;&nbsp;

Over the course of Wall's two seasons with the Rockets, he only appeared in 40 games &ndash; averaging 20.6 points, 6.9 assists, 3.2 rebounds, 2.0 threes and 1.1 steals on .404/.317/.749 shooting splits.&nbsp;
Entering the 2021-22 season, the front office and Wall weren&rsquo;t on the same page about his role, so the executives ultimately asked Wall to stay away from the team.
&ldquo;My second year [in Houston], they didn't want to play me at all,&rdquo; Wall said. &ldquo;At the end of my first year, they were like, &lsquo;Yo, we want to bring you back. We love the way you leading the team. You've been a leader for the young guys.&rsquo; I'm like, &lsquo;I don't give a f*ck about none of that. I said if God put me in this place to help the young guys, then that's what it is. But he didn't put me here for y'all to try to tank and, for me to be a player that can still play and just be wasting my talent, I'm not doing it.&rsquo; They were like, &lsquo;Nah, you&rsquo;re going to start for us next year...&rsquo; and whatever. And I would have been fine coming off the bench for them! But I'm like, &lsquo;Don't just give a motherf*cker a [starting] spot, let him earn it!&rsquo;&nbsp;
&ldquo;So, I go back to check on my condo and a month before the season, they call... This is Coach (Stephen Silas) talking to me and he goes, &lsquo;How would you feel coming off the bench?&rsquo; I said, &lsquo;For who? No offense, but for who? I was your best player last year.&rsquo; [He says], &lsquo;This is what the GM wants. He wants you to play like 10-to-15 minutes a game and sometimes don't play.&rsquo; I said, &lsquo;I'm not doing it.&rsquo; Either you&rsquo;re going to guarantee me some minutes or not. But I'm like, &lsquo;Let a motherf*cker earn the [starting] spot!&rsquo; The coach was like, &lsquo;Man, you don't deserve that, you should be a starter, but this is what they want to do.&rsquo; Well, I'm not doing that. I said I'll rehab, I'll work out every day, I&rsquo;ll stick around the team, I'll come to meetings, I'll fly with ya&rsquo;ll and I'll mentor the guys. So, that&rsquo;s what I'm doing. Then, it got to the point where they were like, &lsquo;Don't come around.&rsquo; They didn't want me around.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I had to work out at 7 a.m. like I was a rookie. I had to work out before they got there; by the time they would come in, I'd be home. I'd be back home by 10:30, chilling all day. So, I'm like, &lsquo;My kids are in Miami. Sh*t, I can't be here.&rsquo; And I'm bored as sh*t! From 10:30 to all day, I'm just chilling until the game. The game is at 7:00 and I get there at 6:59 [since] I ain&rsquo;t playing and I&rsquo;ve already worked out for the day. So, I'm in a whole other place. I'm going out like a motherf*cker, I&rsquo;m bored as hell, I'm wasting money for no reason. So I said, &lsquo;Let me go back to Miami, get on a regular schedule and spend time with my kids every day until I get traded.&rsquo; I didn't get traded, but I got a buyout, so now I'm here [in Los Angeles]. That's how it all went. That&rsquo;s how crazy it was.&rdquo;

Silas pushed back on Wall&rsquo;s claim that the Rockets were intentionally trying to lose games.
"When we go out every night, we&rsquo;re trying to win a basketball game. And we prepare the same way that I prepared when I was working for perennial playoff teams," Silas said, according to the <a href="https://www.chron.com/sports/rockets/article/stephen-silas-john-wall-criticism-17726187.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Houston Chronicle</a>. "We have the same expectations for play. We do things in a manner that is putting us in the direction to win every single night that we&rsquo;re out there. Is that [always] going to happen? No. We&rsquo;re a young team, we have 19- and 20- and 21-year-old guys who emotionally, they go up and down, and with their games there is going to be inconsistency."
Also, Silas said that Wall's dismissal from the team "wasn't a perfect situation for anybody," and that the Rockets' decision to build around Green and Porter "made it hard for John."&nbsp;
The Rockets are still rebuilding, and they currently have the NBA's worst record (10-36). Houston has the league's 30th-ranked offense (scoring 106.2 points per 100 possessions) and 28th-ranked defense (allowing 115.5 points per 100 possessions). However, Silas doesn't think the Rockets' culture is broken or that this rebuilding period will do long-term damage to the team's young core, as Wall suggested.
"The best teacher is experience, and that's what they're getting right now," Silas <a href="https://www.chron.com/sports/rockets/article/stephen-silas-john-wall-criticism-17726187.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">explained</a>. "You look at certain guys around the league, and just because they went through a rebuild, they [don&rsquo;t] have a losing attitude."
Wall is currently averaging 11.4 points, 5.2 assists and 2.7 rebounds in 22.2 minutes per game for the Clippers, who currently have the eighth-best record in the Western Conference at 24-24.

ATLANTA (AP) &mdash; A 25-0 run removed any suspense from Tony Bennett&rsquo;s pursuit of a Virginia coaching milestone.
The No. 13 Cavaliers&nbsp;blew away Georgia Tech&nbsp;with the spurt, which began in the closing minutes of the first half and carried over after the break to give Virginia a 74-56 victory Saturday.
For Bennett, it was win No. 326 as the Cavaliers&rsquo; coach,&nbsp;pushing him into a tie with Terry Holland&nbsp;for the most in school history.
&ldquo;Just the way he has represented basketball and this program, what he&rsquo;s built, it&rsquo;s just tremendous to be able to talk about him,&rdquo; Bennett said. &ldquo;I never got into coaching to break records. I just wanted to win because I love the game.&rdquo;

Bennett improved to 326-119 in 14 years leading the Virginia men&rsquo;s basketball program. Holland went 326-173 over a 16-season tenure that ended in 1990.
Virginia (10-2, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference)&nbsp;<a class="paragraph-link" href="https://twitter.com/i/status/1609245239021113344" target="_blank" rel="noopener">scored the final nine points of the first half</a>&nbsp;&mdash; all on 3-pointers off Georgia Tech turnovers &mdash; to take a 36-25 lead into halftime.
It would get worse for the Yellow Jackets (7-6, 0-3) when the teams returned to the court, as the Cavaliers ripped off another 16 points to make it 52-25 before the home team finally made a basket.
&ldquo;For the most part defensively, we didn&rsquo;t give them anything easy,&rdquo; Bennett said. &ldquo;Then we got a few turnovers and made 3s. When you&rsquo;re not exchanging baskets, that&rsquo;s when stuff like that can happen.&rdquo;
Kihei Clark had 15 points and eight assists to lead Virginia, which kept up its domination of Georgia Tech with a 10th straight victory in the series.&nbsp;Jayden Gardner&nbsp;added 14 points, while Armaan Franklin and Kadin Shedrick added 11 apiece.
Looking to bounce back from an ugly 13-point home loss to Clemson before the 10-day Christmas break, Georgia Tech shook up its lineup by bringing top scorer Miles Kelly off the bench. It did no good.
The Yellow Jackets have lost their first three ACC games by an average margin of nearly 16 points and appear headed for another dismal season. They went 12-20 a year ago.
Kelly scored 20 points but none of his teammates reached double figures. The Yellow Jackets turned it over 23 times, leading to 30 points for the Cavaliers.
&ldquo;Virginia was knocking down a lot of shots,&rdquo; Kelly said. &ldquo;That was really the game. We couldn&rsquo;t get any stops on the defensive end."

Former Virginia star De&rsquo;Andre Hunter was at McCamish Pavilion to cheer on his alma mater and&nbsp;<a class="paragraph-link" href="https://twitter.com/UVAMensHoops/status/1609270059989336066" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stopped by the locker room</a>&nbsp;afterward.
Hunter was a key player on the Cavaliers&rsquo; national championship team in 2019. He now plays for the NBA&rsquo;s Atlanta Hawks, who were off Saturday after losing to LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers the night before.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s been a while since we&rsquo;ve had one of those kind of runs,&rdquo; Bennett said. &ldquo;Maybe it was because De&rsquo;Andre was sitting behind the bench.&rdquo;
BIG PICTURE
Virginia: The Cavaliers set the tone with their accuracy beyond the arc. Eight of their 13 first-half baskets were 3-pointers, many coming in transition off Virginia&rsquo;s smothering defense. Bennett&rsquo;s team looked more like the team that rose to No. 2 in the rankings before consecutive losses to Houston and Miami.
Georgia Tech: Pastner has given little indication in his seven-year tenure that he can transform the Yellow Jackets into a perennial conference contender. Other than a surprising run to the ACC tournament title during the pandemic-marred 2020-21 season, the Yellow Jackets are 36-60 in league play under Pastner.
&ldquo;This was no fun for anybody,&rdquo; the coach said. &ldquo;But there&rsquo;s a lot of basketball to be played.&rdquo;

Virginia: Bennett will look to break the tie with Holland when the Cavaliers travel to Pittsburgh for an ACC game Tuesday night.
Georgia Tech: Hosts another ranked ACC team, No. 14 Miami, to wrap up a four-game homestand Wednesday night.

No. 13 Virginia beats Georgia Tech, Bennett ties school wins mark

Kansas has cracked The Associated Press women&rsquo;s basketball poll for the first time in nearly 10 years after a huge win while South Carolina remained the unanimous No. 1 team.
The 22nd-ranked Jayhawks routed then 12th-ranked Arizona by 27 points on the road to break into the AP Top 25 released Monday.
The top five teams remained the same with the Gamecocks followed by Stanford, Ohio State, Indiana and Notre Dame in voting by a 28-member national media panel.
Virginia Tech was sixth and will host the Fighting Irish on Sunday. Fellow ACC schools North Carolina and N.C. State were seventh and eighth.
UConn, which is beset with injuries, fell three places to ninth after losing at Maryland on Sunday. The Terrapins climbed five spots to 15th. UCLA moved up three spots to 10th.
Kansas, which is 9-0 for the fourth time in school history, last was in the poll on Jan. 14, 2013, when the Jayhawks were 23rd. They&rsquo;ve been on the rise the last two years, finishing 21-10 last season for the program&rsquo;s first 20-win season since 2012-13. Kansas lost to Stanford in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year.
&ldquo;We have 11 returners and four starters back from last year&rsquo;s team so there were high expectations going into this year,&rdquo; Kansas coach Brandon Schneider said. &ldquo;We learned a lot in the NCAA Tournament. We just tried to upgrade our schedule in the non-conference. I feel like we&rsquo;re a group that is pretty bought in on the defensive end right now. Still a ton of room for improvement on the offensive end.&rdquo;
Schneider said he will address with his team their being ranked. The Jayhawks host Tulsa on Friday.
&ldquo;More in terms of the trappings of complacency, and we&rsquo;re still in the non-conference,&rdquo; Schneider said. &ldquo;We need to feel good about it in terms of the program&rsquo;s validation. I think we talked about being a program on the rise and that the trajectory of our program is headed in the right direction.&rdquo;
RISING UTES
Utah moved up to No. 13, the school&rsquo;s best ranking since the Utes were 12th in 2008. Utah &rsquo;s best ranking ever is 11th in 1998. The team opens Pac-12 play on Wednesday against Colorado.

Maryland coach Brenda Frese had a memorable week, earning her 600th victory in a buzzer-beating win over Purdue on Thursday. Her team then beat UConn for the first time on Sunday, also giving the coach her first victory against the perennial powerhouse. Frese coached at Ball State and Minnesota before taking over at Maryland in 2002. She&rsquo;s 601-173 in her career.
