Team Chuck&rsquo;s Global Stars and Team Shaq&rsquo;s OGs have advanced to the 2025 NBA All-Star Final game on Sunday night at the Chase Center in San Francisco.
Team Chuck&rsquo;s Global Stars, composed of Nikola Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Victor Wembanyama, Karl-Anthony Towns, Donovan Mitchell, Trae Young, Alperen Sengun, and Pascal Siakam, won against Team Kenny&rsquo;s Young Stars composed of Anthony Edwards, Evan Mobley, Jaren Jackson Jr., Jalen Williams, Cade Cunningham, Darius Garland, Tyler Herro, and Jalen Brunson with a final score of 41-32.
Gilgeous-Alexander led the way for Team Chuck with 12 points while Wembanyama and Towns contributed 6 points each.&nbsp;
Jaren Jackson Jr., Evan Mobley, and Darius Garland each tallied 6 points for Team Kenny but the team was marred by the absence of Anthony Edwards, who was scratched late from the game due to groin soreness.&nbsp;
Team Shaq&rsquo;s OGs, composed of LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, James Harden, Kyrie Irving, Damian Lillard, Jayson Tatum, and Jaylen Brown, bested Team Candace&rsquo;s Rising Stars from Friday night&rsquo;s Rising Stars game champion with a final score of 42-35.
Hometown superstar Stephen Curry had 8 points in front of the Chase Center crowd while Damian Lillard top-scored for the team with 9 points including the game-winning three-pointer.
Ryan Dunn and Dalton Knecht had 8 points apiece for the Rising Stars as they put up a good fight, but eventually fell short in the end.

Brendan Malone, whose coaching career spanned six decades, is the recipient of the 2023 Tex Winter Assistant Coach Lifetime Impact award, the National Basketball Coaches Association announced today.
&ldquo;Brendan Malone has been a name synonymous with NBA success for many decades,&rdquo; said Rick Carlisle, Indiana Pacers head coach and NBCA president. &ldquo;He's helped develop players and young coaches, and been a multiple NBA champion on Chuck Daly's Detroit coaching staff in 1989 and 1990. Congrats to Coach Malone on this prestigious recognition.&rdquo;&nbsp;
&ldquo;I want to thank the National Basketball Coaches Association for this award,&rdquo; Malone said. &ldquo;Tex Winter was a man I got to know and respect. I also want to thank all of the head coaches that I enjoyed working with during my 29-year career in the NBA, in particular Hubie Brown who brought me into the league; Chuck Daly and our two championships; the Van Gundys, Stan and Jeff, and Don Chaney. Lastly, I want to thank my wife Maureen and our six children for sharing my journey.&rdquo;
Wetting his whistle with a few years of coaching CYO basketball, Malone began his coaching career in 1967 at the legendary Power Memorial Academy in New York City where he won three city championships and three Coach of the Year awards.
He then moved to the college ranks in 1976 as an assistant coach at Fordham, then Yale, and then Syracuse. At Syracuse, the Orange went to the NCAA Tournament four times. Malone was a Syracuse assistant for the first five years of the Big East. He left Syracuse to become head coach at the University of Rhode Island (URI) in 1984.
While at URI in 1986, Hubie Brown recruited Malone to join him as an assistant for the New York Knicks, the beginning of his 29-year NBA career. Malone had three different tours with the Knicks, the most notable of which was the four years with head coach Jeff Van Gundy. From 1996 to 2000, the Knicks went 177-119 with two Eastern Conference Finals appearances, as well as a trip to the 1999 NBA Finals.
Malone was an assistant coach for Stan Van Gundy for five years (2007 to 2012) in Orlando. The Magic won 50-plus games four straight years, went to the Eastern Conference Finals twice, and to the 2009 NBA Finals.
Malone was also an assistant coach for Bob Hill and Rick Pitino in New York, Don Chaney in both Detroit and New York, Isiah Thomas in Indiana, Paul Silas in Cleveland and Stan Van Gundy in Detroit. He was also a scout for the Detroit Pistons.&nbsp;
But it was in Detroit with Chuck Daly that Malone made his name, orchestrating the Jordan Rules defense that helped propel the Pistons to back-to-back NBA championships in 1989 and 1990.
Malone was the first head coach of the Toronto Raptors in 1995-96 and also served as head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers for 18 games in 2004-05.
In 27 seasons of NBA coaching, teams that Malone coached went to the playoffs 20 times, to the Conference Finals seven times, and to the NBA Finals four times, winning the title twice. His teams compiled a 1165-1001 record (.538).
Brendan and his son, Michael, who is the head coach of the 2023 NBA champion Denver Nuggets, are the only father-son coaching duo to have both won an NBA championship.

Brendan Malone was enshrined in the New York Catholic High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 1993. In 1997, he was inducted into the Basketball Old-Timers of America Hall of Fame (which recognizes and honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to New York City basketball). He is a 2017 enshrinee in the Power Memorial Academy Hall of Fame.&nbsp;

The NBCA Tex Winter Lifetime Impact Award honors the tremendous achievements and commitment of Hall-of-Famer Tex Winter, who set a standard of innovation, integrity, competitive excellence, loyalty, and tireless promotion of NBA basketball throughout the course of his outstanding NBA coaching career.
The award is selected annually by the NBCA Selection Committee, comprised of some of the most respected coaches and executives in the game, including Rick Adelman, Hubie Brown, Doug Collins, Wayne Embry, Danny Ferry, Mike Fratello, George Karl, Doc Rivers, Rod Thorn and Lenny Wilkens.
This year&rsquo;s nominees included assistant coaches Bob Beyer, Dan Burke, Jeff Bzdelik, Gordon Chiesa, Carroll Dawson, Hank Egan, Jim Eyen, Brian Hill, Jim Lynam, Bob McAdoo, Brendan Suhr and Bob Weiss.
Prior recipients of this award are Ron Adams (2022), Dick Helm (2021), Bill Bertka (2019), Tim Grgurich (2018), Ron Rothstein (2017) and Phil Johnson (2016).

Rick Adelman, a Hall-of-Fame coach and one of only 10 coaches in NBA history to have won more than 1,000 games, is the recipient of the 2023 Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award, the National Basketball Coaches Association announced today.
&ldquo;Rick Adelman&rsquo;s NBA coaching career has been highlighted by innovation, integrity, and excellence,&rdquo; said Indiana Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle, who is also the NBCA president. &ldquo;His teams always played to their strengths, and Rick always found subtle ways to reinvent NBA basketball to help his players thrive. His quiet, unassuming nature belies his impact as one of the great NBA coaches of all time.&rdquo;
&ldquo;I am honored to receive the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award,&rdquo; Adelman said. &ldquo;To be included with the past winners is special. Chuck was a great coach and respected by all those who coached against his teams. To receive an award like this I have to thank all those who helped me along the way, in particular my assistant coaches and front offices. I would also like to thank the players I had through the years. Their effort and cooperation made everything I did possible. Good players make coaching much easier.

Adelman coached in the NBA for 29 years, including 23 as a head coach for five different teams (the Portland Trail Blazers, Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings, Houston Rockets and Minnesota Timberwolves), amassing a 1,042-749 (.582) career record. He led his teams &ndash; known for their free-flowing, read-and-react motion offenses &ndash; to the playoffs 16 times, to the Conference Finals four times and to the NBA Finals twice.
He played collegiately at Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles and, as a senior in 1967-68, was voted West Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year. Drafted by the San Diego Rockets in 1968, Adelman played seven seasons in the NBA.
Adelman began his coaching career at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Oregon, in 1977 where he led his teams to a 141-39 record and three conference championships in six years. It was while at Chemeketa in 1983 that he was hired by the legendary coach Jack Ramsay as an assistant coach for the Blazers, a position he held until he was named head coach midway through the 1988-89 season.
In his first full season as an NBA head coach in 1989-90, Adelman led the Blazers to a 59-23 record, the Western Conference championship and a trip to the NBA Finals. Two years later, the Blazers were once again Western Conference champions and back in the NBA Finals. Under Adelman, Portland had four straight seasons of 50-plus wins, a record of 291-154 (.684) and were in the playoffs all six seasons.&nbsp;
Adelman coached the Warriors for the 1995-96 and 1996-97 seasons before assuming the reins in Sacramento in 1998. In eight seasons as head coach of the Kings, Adelman had a 395-229 (.683) record, winning 50 games or more in five consecutive seasons and taking the team to the playoffs each year.
In 2007, Adelman was named the Rockets' head coach, leading Houston to back-to-back 50-plus win seasons in his first two years and a winning record in all four seasons. Adelman closed out his coaching career with the Minnesota Timberwolves, where his teams improved from 17 to 26 to 31 to 40 wins in his three seasons at the helm.
In 2014, upon his retirement, Adelman ranked ninth all-time in both games coached (1,791) and games won (1,042). Today, he ranks 10th in games won and 13th on the all-time playoff wins list with 79. His teams had a total of 11 50-win seasons and two 60-plus win seasons. Adelman finished runner-up in Coach of the Year voting four times with three different teams (1990-91 with Portland, 2000-01 and 2001-02 with Sacramento and 2008-09 with Houston) and was a three-time All-Star Game coach.
Adelman was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach in 2021. He was inducted into the Loyola Marymount Hall of Fame in 1986 and was named Oregon Sports Person of the Year in both 1990 and 1992. In 2015, the West Coast Conference (formerly the WCAC) inducted him into its Hall of Honor.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) &mdash; Grant Sherfield scored a season-high 30 points, and Oklahoma beat No. 2 Alabama 93-69 on Saturday in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge to end the Crimson Tide&rsquo;s nine-win streak.
Jalen Hill added a career-high 26 points, helping second-year Oklahoma coach Porter Moser to his biggest win with the program. Tanner Groves had 14 points and 12 rebounds.
The Sooners (12-9) had lost three straight, but against the Crimson Tide shot 58% from the field.
Rylan Griffen led Alabama (18-3) with 15 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Brandon Miller, who came in averaging 19.5 points per game, finished with 11.
NO. 3 HOUSTON 75, CINCINNATI 69
HOUSTON (AP) &mdash; Jarace Walker had a career-high 25 points and seven rebounds, and Houston rallied from an 11-point second-half deficit to defeat Cincinnati.
Walker, who scored 13 points in the second half, was 10 of 14 from the field. J&rsquo;Wan Roberts added 14 points and six rebounds, and Jamal Shead scored 13 points for Houston (20-2, 8-1 American Athletic Conference).
Houston has won at least 20 games in eight straight seasons under coach Kelvin Sampson.
Landers Nolley II had 24 points, including 6 3-pointers. Vicktor Lakhin added 15 points, and David DeJulius had 14 points and nine assists for Cincinnati (14-8, 5-4).&nbsp;

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) &mdash; Olivier Nkamhoua scored 27 points and Zakai Zeigler had 22 points and 10 assists to lead Tennessee over Texas in an SEC/Big 12 Challenge.
Josiah-Jordan James added 14 and Santiago Vescovi had 12 for Tennessee (18-3), which led by as many as 22 midway through the second half.
Sir&rsquo;Jabari Rice scored 21 to lead Texas (17-4). Marcus Carr and Brock Cunningham finished with 11 each.
NO. 5 KANSAS STATE 64, FLORIDA 50
MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) &mdash; Keyontae Johnson had 13 points and 11 rebounds against his former team, Markquis Nowell flirted with the first triple-double in Kanas State history, and the Wildcats beat Florida in an SEC/Big 12 Challenge.
Nowell finished with 13 points, nine rebounds and eight assists, and Nae&rsquo;Qwan Tomlin also had 11 points. The Wildcats improved to 18-3 to match the 1972-73 team for the best start through 21 games in school history.
Johnson struggled from the field, going just 5 of 16 and even getting stuffed by the front of the rim during a windmill dunk on a second-half fast break. But it was nevertheless a special night for the senior forward, who collapsed on the Gators&rsquo; sideline due to a heart condition during a game against Florida State just over two years ago.
Colin Castleton scored 13 points for the Gators (12-9). Myreon Jones and Will Richard had 11 apiece.
NO. 6 ARIZONA 95, WASHINGTON 72
SEATTLE (AP) &mdash; Azuolas Tubelis had 25 points and 10 rebounds, Oumar Ballo added 21 points and 12 rebounds, and Arizona used a big second-half run to pull away to win its fourth straight.
Tubelis topped 20 points for the first time in five games and his rebound putback while being fouled with 4:29 remaining gave the Wildcats a 78-63 lead and sent Washington fans headed for the exits.
Kerr Kriisa added 18 points, hitting six 3-pointers, and Courtney Ramey scored 14 for the Wildcats (19-3, 8-3 Pac-12).
Keion Brooks Jr. led Washington with 25 points and Keyon Menifield added 21. But the Huskies (13-10, 5-7) suffered from too many scoring droughts and didn&rsquo;t have an answer for Arizona&rsquo;s 19-1 run in the early stages of the second half.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) &mdash; Armaan Franklin and Jayden Gardner scored 18 points each and Virginia used a big first-half run to take control over Boston College for its sixth straight victory.
The Cavaliers (16-3, 8-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) trailed 18-15 before starting an 18-4 run over the next 11 minutes. Virginia put the game away with a 16-4 second-half spurt.
Quinten Post scored 24 to lead the Eagles (10-12, 4-7) and Makai Ashton-Langford added 12 points.
Virginia&rsquo;s Isaac McKneely finished with 12 points and Reece Beekman had 11 and eight assists.
NO. 9 KANSAS 77, KENTUCKY 68
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) &mdash; Jalen Wilson scored 22 points, including one in a series of huge 3-pointers down the stretch, and Kansas avoided its first four-game losing streak under coach Bill Self.
Wilson made 9 of 18 from the field and grabbed eight rebounds for Kansas (17-4), which finished even with Kentucky at 49% shooting. K.J. Adams Jr. added 17 points, Dick had 13 and McCullar 11 with 12 rebounds as the Jayhawks edged Kentucky 34-29 on the glass.
Oscar Tshiebwe had 18 points and nine rebounds, and Jacob Toppin and Cason Wallace each added 14 for Kentucky (14-7), which had won its previous four.
MISSISSIPPI STATE 81, NO. 11 TCU 74, OT
STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) &mdash; Tolu Smith had 27 points, 13 rebounds and five assists to lead Mississippi State to an overtime victory.
Dashawn Davis added 16 points to help Mississippi State (13-8) snap a five-game losing streak. Shakeel Moore had 11, including six in overtime, while Cameron Matthews had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs. Tyler Stevenson also added 10 points off the Bulldogs&rsquo; bench.
Damion Baugh led TCU (16-5) with 19 points and Emanuel Miller had 13. Shahada Wells and Jakobe Coles each had 12 for the Horned Frogs and Chuck O&rsquo;Bannon had 10.
Davis&rsquo; 3 pointer with 55 seconds left in the second half gave the Bulldogs a 66-64 advantage. Emanuel Miller scored with 32 seconds remaining and then both teams missed chances to win in regulation.
MISSOURI 78, NO. 12 IOWA STATE 61
COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) &mdash; Kobe Brown scored 20 points, and D&rsquo;Moi Hodge scored 17 points to help Missouri take down Iowa State in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.
Brown scored 14 of his points in the first half and led Missouri (16-5) with 12 rebounds. Nick Honor added 12 points and DeAndre Gholston scored 10.
Jaren Holmes led Iowa State (15-5) with 19 points, and Gabe Kalscheur added 14.
The Tigers&rsquo; 78 points were a season-high for an Iowa State opponent in regulation; the Cyclones are 0-3 this season when allowing at least 70 points in regulation.
CREIGHTON 84, NO. 13 XAVIER 67
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) &mdash; Arthur Kamula scored 20 points, Creighton&rsquo;s four other starters finished in double-figures and the Bluejays earned their fourth straight Big East win.
Creighton (13-8, 7-3) steadily built a double-digit lead throughout the game and made 34 of its 60 field goal attempts (56.7%) before a sold-out crowd.
Ryan Kalkbrenner scored 17 points, Baylor Scheierman had 14, Trey Alexander finished with 13 and Ryan Nembhard added 11 for the Bluejays, who avenged a 90-87 loss at Xavier on Jan. 11.
Zach Freemantle led Xavier (17-5, 9-2) with 18 points, followed by Colby Jones and Adam Kunkel with 13.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) &mdash; Julian Strawther had a career-high 40 points, including eight 3-pointers, and Gonzaga pulled away down the stretch for its 16th consecutive victory over Portland.
Anton Watson added 17 points for Gonzaga (18-4, 7-1 West Coast Conference).
Strawther is the first player to reach 40 points for the Zags since Kyle Wiltjer had 45 against Pacific in 2016.
Portland (11-13, 3-5) was led by Moses Wood with 19 points. Juan Sebastian Gorosito, a freshman, finished with a career-high 17 points.
WEST VIRGINIA 80, NO. 15 AUBURN 77
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) &mdash; Erik Stevenson scored a career-high 31 points and West Virginia withstood a furious late rally from Auburn to win an SEC/Big 12 Challenge matchup.
The Mountaineers (13-8) have won two straight for the first time in a month. Jimmy Bell Jr. added 15 points for the Mountaineers.
Charles Barkley cheered on his alma mater from a courtside seat, but Auburn (16-5) couldn&rsquo;t overcome another slow start. The Tigers have lost two straight for the first time in two years.
Jaylin Williams led Auburn with 18 points. Johni Broome added 15 and Allen Flanigan scored 13.
NO. 16 MARQUETTE 89, DEPAUL 69
CHICAGO (AP) &mdash; David Joplin went 8 for 11 from 3-point range for a career-high 28 points, Tyler Kolek had 24 points, 10 assists and 9 rebounds, and Marquette defeated DePaul.
Marquette has won eight of its last nine games, and moved into a tie with No. 13 Xavier atop the Big East.
Marquette (17-5, 9-2) pulled away in the second half. Oso Ighodaro had 10 points, making all five of his shots, and Olivier-Maxence Prosper scored 13 and had 8 rebounds.
Umoja Gibson scored 25 points for DePaul (9-13, 3-8) on 8-of-12 shooting.
NO. 17 BAYLOR 67, ARKANSAS 64
WACO, Texas (AP) &mdash; Keyonte George scored 24 points, including seven in a row down the stretch, and Baylor beat Arkansas in an SEC/Big 12 Challenge.
Baylor (16-5) fell behind by as many as eight points in the second half after an early 11-point lead. But the Bears closed it out after Flo Thamba made two free throws for a 55-53 lead with 3:37 left.
LJ Cryer added 20 points and Jalen Bridges had 10 for the Bears, who won their sixth game in a row despite shooting a 34% (20 of 59) from the field. They offset the season-worst shooting from the field by making 21 of 24 free throws, including two by Cryer with 10 seconds left and two by George with 4.3 seconds remaining.
Ricky Council IV scored 25 points for Arkansas (14-7). Davonte Davis had 16 points, but missed the front end of a 1-plus-1 with 2.3 seconds left, though Joseph Pinion got the ball in the right corner only to miss wildly on a 3-pointer as time ran out.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) &mdash; Aaron Estrada scored 25 points and Darlinstone Dubar added 18 as Hofstra ended College of Charleston&rsquo;s 20-game winning streak.
The Pride (15-8, 8-2 Colonial Athletic Association) were down 28-20 early before rallying past the Cougars (21-2, 9-1), who had not lost since falling to then-No. 1 North Carolina on Nov. 11.
Tyler Thomas had 17 points and eight rebounds for Hofstra.
Ante Brzovic finished with 18 points to lead Charleston.
PITTSBURGH 71, NO. 20 MIAMI 68
PITTSBURGH (AP) &mdash; Blake Hinson tipped in a Jamarius Burton miss with 31 seconds remaining and Pittsburgh rallied past Miami.
The Panthers (15-7, 8-3 ACC) held the Hurricanes (16-5, 7-4) scoreless over the final 2:26 while closing on an 11-0 run to beat a ranked team for the third time this season to bolster its increasingly impressive NCAA tournament resume.
Hinson finished with 21 points for Pitt. Burton had 19 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists as the Panthers stunned Miami in front of a rare sell-out crowd at the Petersen Events Center.
Jordan Miller led the Hurricanes with 18 points. Isaiah Wong added 14 but Miami committed three of its 12 turnovers in the final 35 seconds as the Panthers stormed back.

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) &mdash; Brandon Weatherspoon scored 14 points and Florida Atlantic remained undefeated at home.

PROVO, Utah (AP) &mdash; Logan Johnson had 14 points and freshman Aidan Mahaney scored all 10 of his points, including a fade-away jumper just before the buzzer, in the second half and Saint Mary&rsquo;s (Cal) won its 10th in a row.
Mitchell Saxen had 11 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two blocks for Saint Mary&rsquo;s (19-4, 8-0 West Coast Conference). Alex Ducas scored 12 points and Augustas Marciulionis added 10.
Dallin Hall was fouled on a driving lay-up attempt with 10.2 seconds left and made 1-of-2 free throws to give BYU a 56-55 lead but Mahaney took the inbounds pass, probed the defense before he drove the lane, stopped near the right block and pivoted away from the basket before hitting the winning jumper over the out-stretched arm of defender Fousseyni Traore.
Hall scored a career-high 23 points on 9 of 14 shooting but made just 3 of 6 from the free-throw line for BYU (14-10, 4-5). Fousseyni Traore added 11 points and eight rebounds.
NO. 24 CLEMSON 82, FLORIDA STATE 81
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) &mdash; Chase Hunter drove the lane and drew a foul, sinking the free throw, to help Clemson escape with a win over Florida State.
Hunter Tyson scored 27 points on 10 of 17 shooting for Clemson (18-4, 10-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), which halted an eight-game road losing streak to Florida State. Hunter finished with 25.
Matthew Cleveland scored 15 of his 18 points in the second half for Florida State (7-15, 5-6), which made a season-high 13 3-pointers. Caleb Mills and Darin Green Jr. each hit four 3-pointers for the Seminoles. Freshman forward Baba Miller had his best game, scoring 11 points and pulling down four rebounds in 20 minutes.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) &mdash; Bryce Hopkins scored 27 points and Providence dominated the second half and knocked off fourth-ranked UConn 73-61 on Wednesday night for its eighth straight victory.
Noah Locke added 17 points to help the Friars (13-3, 5-0) earn their second win over a ranked team this season and remain unbeaten in the Big East. It was Providence&rsquo;s first win over the Huskies at Amica Mutual Pavilion since Feb. 20, 2012, when the Friars won 72-70.
Jordan Hawkins led the Huskies (14-2, 3-2) with 15 points, and Donovan Clingan added 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The Huskies have lost two in a row after opening the season with 14 straight wins and winning their first three conference games.
GEORGIA TECH 76, NO. 12 MIAMI 70
ATLANTA (AP) &mdash; Lance Terry scored a season-high 24 points, Miles Kelly added 20 and Georgia Tech snapped Miami&rsquo;s nine-game winning streak.
The Yellow Jackets (8-6, 1-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) closed the game on a 12-0 run that ended with a pair of free throws by Kelly with 16.5 seconds remaining. That ended the scoring.
Miami (13-2, 4-1) didn&rsquo;t score over the last four-plus minutes. Jordan Miller and Norchad Omier each led the Hurricanes with 17 points, and Nijel Pack had 13.
NO. 13 ARKANSAS 74, NO. 20 MISSOURI 68
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) &mdash; Ricky Council scored 25 points and Joseph Pinion scored 13 off the bench as Arkansas rallied from a 17-point deficit to beat Missouri.
The Razorbacks (12-2, 1-1 Southeastern Conference) didn&rsquo;t lead until back-to-back fast-break buckets from Council and guard Devo Davis provided a one-point advantage with 14:24 left.
Missouri (12-2, 1-1) had stifled Arkansas and built its lead to 17 points with its zone defense in the first half, limiting the Razorbacks to 36% shooting from the field and 2 for 12 from 3-point range.
Sean East led Missouri with 13 points, while Nick Honor and Kobe Brown added 12 and 11, respectively.
N.C. STATE 84, NO. 16 DUKE 60
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) &mdash; Terquavion Smith scored 24 points and N.C. State jumped all over Duke from the opening tip.
Jarkel Joiner added 21 points, nine assists and six rebounds for the Wolfpack (12-4, 2-3 ACC), who scored the game&rsquo;s first 15 points and led by 22 by halftime in a shocking romp.
While the Wolfpack pounced, the Blue Devils (11-4, 2-2) watched early shots roll off the rim or be swatted away. They compounded their problems by piling up turnovers in a game that quickly got away.
Freshman Kyle Filipowski scored 14 points to lead Duke, which shot 40% and just 5 of 15 from 3-point range. Duke also committed 21 turnovers, many fueling the Wolfpack&rsquo;s 25 fast-break points.
NO. 17 TCU 88, NO. 19 BAYLOR 87
WACO, Texas (AP) &mdash; Chuck O&rsquo;Bannon made a jumper with 4 seconds left and TCU rallied to beat Baylor, extending the Horned Frogs&rsquo; winning streak to 11 games.
The Frogs (13-1, 2-0 Big 12) got the ball back after a missed 3-pointer by Baylor&rsquo;s Jaylen Bridges that went out of bounds with 10 seconds left. Mike Miles Jr., who scored a career-high 33 points, had the ball, but passed to O&rsquo;Bannon in front of the TCU bench.
Baylor freshman Keyonte George scored a season-high 27 points, but he missed a contested drive to the hoop as the game ended.
Damian Baugh and Eddie Lampkin both had 15 points for TCU, which has come back from double-digit deficits in each of its first two Big 12 games. Lampkin had five points in the final 1:45.
Adam Flagler and LJ Cryer had 13 points each for Baylor (10-4, 0-2), which had its 13-game home winning streak snapped.

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) &mdash; Terry Roberts overcame early foul trouble to match his career high with 26 points and Georgia made first-year coach Mike White&rsquo;s Southeastern Conference debut with the Bulldogs memorable by beating Auburn.
Auburn (11-3, 1-1 SEC) trailed most of the game despite Johni Broome&rsquo;s 22 points and 12 rebounds. The Tigers couldn&rsquo;t stage a serious late comeback, pulling no closer than eight points in the final 3 minutes.
Kario Oquendo had 17 points for Georgia (11-3, 1-0), which celebrated its SEC opener after a strong nonconference showing under White, the former Florida coach.
NO. 23 CHARLESTON 92, N.C. A&amp;T 79
GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) &mdash; Dalton Bolon tallied his first career double-double with 22 points and 10 boards as the College of Charleston won its 14th straight game by notching a victory over N.C. A&amp;T.
Charleston (15-1, 3-0 Colonial Athletic Association) is off to its best single-season start since joining the Division I ranks in 1991.
Bolon &mdash; who was one of five Charleston players to score in double digits &mdash; made 10 of 16 shots for the Cougars and also dished out two assists. Ante Brzovic and Pat Robinson III each scored 12 points, while Raekwon Horton and Ben Burnham both had 11.
Kam Woods scored a career-high 30 points to lead N.C. A&amp;T (6-10, 1-2). Duncan Powell added 20 points for the Aggies, while Marcus Watson had 12 points and 12 boards.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) &mdash; Caleb Grill scored 20 points and Iowa State held on to beat Oklahoma.

Jalen Hill scored 16 and Tanner Groves had 15 points and eight rebounds for the Sooners (9-5, 0-2). Oklahoma was coming off a 70-69 home loss to No. 6 Texas.

Providence beats No. 4 UConn 73-61 for 8th straight win

Michael Jordan was moments away from hoisting his third of what would become five NBA Most Valuable Player awards, and then-Commissioner David Stern greeted him at the midcourt ceremony with words that were both simple and profound.
&ldquo;You are simply the standard,&rdquo; Stern said that night in 1992, &ldquo;by which basketball excellence is measured.&rdquo;
That&rsquo;s never been more true.
The NBA MVP award has been renamed The Michael Jordan Trophy, the league announced Tuesday. Jordan is a five-time MVP so he has five trophies named for Maurice Podoloff &mdash; the league&rsquo;s first commissioner. But after six decades of the award bearing Podoloff&rsquo;s name, the NBA decided the time was right to rebrand.
The Jordan trophy will stand 23.6 inches tall and weigh 23.6 pounds -- nods to his jersey number and six NBA titles with the Chicago Bulls -- but is not a depiction of him. The chairman of the Charlotte Hornets approved the design, one that symbolizes someone reaching for excellence, but did not want the statue to be of himself. He also declined a request for comment through the NBA.
&ldquo;Anybody should be able to see this and see themselves in it,&rdquo; said Mark Smith, a longtime designer at Jordan Brand and the person who oversaw the trophy&rsquo;s design. &ldquo;They should feel the excellence of Michael Jordan and his pursuit. It&rsquo;s got his name on it, but it isn&rsquo;t him. It&rsquo;s everybody. It could be a shipbuilder or it could be a teacher or a lawyer or a writer who looks at it and says, &lsquo;That&rsquo;s what I&rsquo;m trying to do.&rsquo;&rdquo;
The league has rebranded almost all its trophies in the last two seasons, even adding some new ones. As part of Tuesday&rsquo;s announcement, the league revealed that The Jerry West Award is being introduced and will be given to the NBA Clutch Player of the Year &mdash; which, like almost all other league awards, will be voted on by a media panel. NBA coaches will nominate players for the clutch award.
Also, the Defensive Player of the Year will now receive The Hakeem Olajuwon Trophy; the Rookie of the Year will receive The Wilt Chamberlain Trophy; the Sixth Man of the Year will now receive The John Havlicek Trophy; and the NBA&rsquo;s Most Improved Player will receive The George Mikan Trophy.
&ldquo;Our new collection of trophies celebrates some of the greatest and most impactful players in the history of the NBA,&rdquo; NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said. &ldquo;As we recognize the league&rsquo;s top performers each season, we also pay tribute to the legends who embody these prestigious awards.&rdquo;
<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nba-sports-nikola-jokic-38e98ac99f4a71a971a5e626ef7e5209">It became evident last week that something was changing about the MVP trophy</a> when the NBA said Podoloff&rsquo;s name was going onto a new prize -- a trophy that will go to the team with the best regular season record.
The MVP trophy has many levels of numerical significance related to Jordan, besides its height and weight. It has a five-sided base, a tribute to his five MVP awards. The name badge is six-sided, one for each of his championships. The base is shaped at a 15-degree angle; he played 15 NBA seasons.
&ldquo;I&rsquo;m always going to numbers and symbiology as key root DNA to make something specific and authentic for that person,&rdquo; Smith said. &ldquo;When you start putting all these things together, there&rsquo;s only one person and it becomes very unique. Not different, but very unique.&rdquo;
Jordan was involved at every step of the design process, Smith said. The final product was a bronze trophy depicting a player &ldquo;breaking out of a rock to reach for the ultimate rock &mdash; a crystal basketball,&rdquo; the league said. The trophy becomes more refined closer to the top, meant to show how hard work leads to something more polished and finally something great.
Smith said he fully expects to be emotional when he sees the new trophy awarded for the first time this spring.
&ldquo;This is actually the highest achievement for a single player ... and it&rsquo;s mind-blowing,&rdquo; Smith said. &ldquo;It&rsquo;ll be a mind-blower.&rdquo;
Other trophies renamed or reimagined in the last year or so include ones named for Joe Dumars (sportsmanship), Red Auerbach (coach of the year), the Kobe Bryant All-Star MVP award &mdash; along with the Larry O&rsquo;Brien Trophy for the NBA champions and the Bill Russell NBA Finals MVP trophy.
New Eastern Conference and Western Conference championship trophies named for Bob Cousy and Oscar Robertson respectively were added, along with the Larry Bird Trophy for East finals MVP and the Magic Johnson Trophy for West finals MVP. The league also began issuing divisional championship trophies, naming them for Nat &ldquo;Sweetwater&rdquo; Clifton (Atlantic Division), Wayne Embry (Central), Earl Lloyd (Southeast), Willis Reed (Southwest), Sam Jones (Northwest) and Chuck Cooper (Pacific).

When Mike Brown was coaching in San Antonio under Gregg Popovich, he recalls a young, free-spirited Manu Ginobili, whose play would range from &ldquo;wow&rdquo; to &ldquo;doing some stuff that helped Pop get white hair quicker.&rdquo;&nbsp;
Now in the head seat with the Sacramento Kings, Brown sees a little bit of that in Malik Monk in the best of ways.
&ldquo;I'm not comparing him to Manu, so don't write this down at all,&rdquo; Brown said with a laugh. &ldquo;That's kind of Malik. He's gonna do more good than bad out there, so you gotta let 'em hoop. You've gotta let him feel his mojo and all that other stuff, and that's what I try to do.&rdquo;
Averaging career-bests of 14.5 points and 4.0 assists per game on a personal-high 60.1% True Shooting and <a href="https://cleaningtheglass.com/stats/player/4279#tab-offensive_overview" target="_blank" rel="noopener">26.9% assist percentage</a>, Monk is playing with a palpable confidence and energy that has opened up parts of his skill set we haven&rsquo;t necessarily seen on a nightly basis since he came into the league.&nbsp;
He&rsquo;s found a rhythm as a playmaker, has continued to be a microwave scorer and, above all else, has not been pigeonholed.
&ldquo;Mike lets me be me, man. He just lets me go out there and play my game. He don't try to limit me to things,&rdquo; Monk told Basketball News. &ldquo;He'll show me when I miss somebody on the kick-out and things like that, but he doesn't limit me. I've been like this my whole life. I played point guard before I went to Kentucky, so I've been handling the ball for a little bit. So it's just him giving me the opportunity.&rdquo;

Everybody knows he can put the ball in the bucket. It&rsquo;s how Monk is doing it, and of course, what he&rsquo;s doing to involve his teammates. While he has been more involved in pick-and-roll actions, it&rsquo;s the handoff possessions that jump off the page. With Domantas Sabonis at his disposal, Brown has doubled the average amount of those per game (1.42) from Malik&rsquo;s time in Los Angeles (0.71), per InStat.
Getting him moving on curls toward the ball and similar plays has resulted in the sixth-year guard putting it on the floor and naturally getting to the rim, or dishing it off to the next man for a better look.
&ldquo;First side, the defense is great. Second side, they relax a little bit. Third side, they're relaxing more. So we just try to move it, move the defense as much as possible,&rdquo; Monk explained. &ldquo;But they can't help off me as much 'cause I can shoot. They can't help off of Domas that much because he's a big threat rolling. So whatever they do is gonna be wrong, and I've just been making the right reads this year.&rdquo;
Candidly, Brown made it clear that he will not hesitate to pull Monk aside during those not-so-good moments too, as the 24-year-old is simultaneously turning it over twice a night through 24 games.&nbsp;
&ldquo;When you have a guy that's as talented as he is, he's gonna take some risk,&rdquo; Brown said. &ldquo;He knows if he makes a mistake, I'mma yell at him, I'mma get on him, I'mma coach 'em. I said, 'Come on, you've been around me long enough where sometimes you've gotta let crap go through one ear and out the other. I know I'm the one on you, but that's how you've gotta survive in this business. That's how you thrive in this business. I gotta coach you and I will, but sometimes if you feel like you can make a play, go make a play.'&nbsp;And so, he knows that he's got that support from me, and vice-versa.
"So I think when a player feels that and really believes it, it just gives him more ability to be himself, which is go make plays for himself and others out on the floor.&rdquo;
Kings forward Harrison Barnes agrees with Brown&rsquo;s assessment.
&ldquo;I mean Malik, his energy is vital for us,&rdquo; Barnes said. &ldquo;There's some players who come in this league and... you can't necessarily put them in a role, you can't put them in a box. You kinda just roll the ball out there and pray it goes well.&nbsp;
&ldquo;And he's one of those guys that, for us, we just wanna give him just ultimate freedom, play through his mistakes. He brings so much energy for us, just a different look to our second unit. And I think that has become contagious.&rdquo;

Monk is at his most dangerous on fast breaks. He likes to push the pace &ldquo;because we know a lot of teams don't like to get back in transition,&rdquo; and averages 1.24 points per possession in those scenarios.&nbsp;
The vast majority of his rapid play comes when he&rsquo;s playing alongside his friend, De'Aaron Fox. Before teaming up on the Kings, Monk and Fox were also backcourt partners on the Kentucky Wildcats in 2016-17. Monk has <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/player/1628370/passes-dash?dir=D&amp;sort=PASS&amp;PerMode=Totals" target="_blank" rel="noopener">passed to him more than any teammate by far</a> (147 times).
And together, they play at the highest pace on the team (108.21) &mdash; a mark that <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/lineups/advanced?CF=MIN*GE*200&amp;GroupQuantity=2&amp;dir=D&amp;slug=advanced&amp;sort=PACE" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ranks 10th in the NBA</a> among duos with at least 200 minutes combined. As far as Monk is concerned, he and Fox have picked up where they left off in Lexington.
&ldquo;He was a big part [of me coming to Sacramento] 'cause we're so comfortable with each other and we know how to play off each other,&rdquo; Monk said. &ldquo;Yeah man, it's been working out for me.&rdquo;

On the opposite side of the coin, Monk has turned up the defensive pressure while sharing the floor with Sacramento&rsquo;s tenacious stopper, Davion Mitchell. In fact, he and the man they call &ldquo;Off Night&rdquo; own the Kings&rsquo; <a href="https://go.nba.com/uytkg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">best defensive rating on the team</a> (99.5) &mdash; the only duo allowing fewer than 100 points per 100 possessions.
&ldquo;Ah, that's hot,&rdquo; Monk reacted when Basketball News told him. &ldquo;I try to give Davion a lot of confidence, man, because he's the head of the snake, 'cause he's the point guard. He usually guards the best player. So however he guards is how the rest of us is gonna feed off of that. And I try to tell him that every game, every time we're on the court.&nbsp;So he just makes me go up a level. That's why I just try to force that [message] to him and I think that's why it's working for us.&rdquo;
A key cog in the bench bunch alongside him, Chimezie Metu has enjoyed the attitude Monk has brought into the locker room and on the floor.
&ldquo;He's great to be around. High energy. He's going out there being vocal, kinda keeping everybody's spirits up and it's just been great having him around,&rdquo; Metu told Basketball News. &ldquo;Personality-wise, he's kind of the guy that's been gluing everybody together. I feel like he has a great relationship with everybody on the team. Yeah man, he's fun to be around and fun to play with.
&ldquo;It's been fun playing with Malik and Davion and TD (Terence Davis) and also Trey [Lyles] at times. I feel like during practice and stuff, we're usually like the second unit that kinda does everything together, so we're always laughing, joking. But I think at the end of the day, we understand the task at hand because I feel like our job is to either keep the lead going or give us the energy to bring us back into a game. So either way, we have to have high energy at all times. I feel like we've been doing a great job of that.&rdquo;
Brown has his own way of describing Monk&rsquo;s effect on his ball club.
&ldquo;You know, he's a free spirit. Malik is what I call a connector,&rdquo; Brown said. &ldquo;He just brings people together and he uplifts people all the time. He talks to everybody and he jokes with everybody, he touches everybody and everybody on the team has respect for him &mdash; not just for him as a person, but also they know that when he speaks, he knows what he's talking about because he's right a lot of the times.&nbsp;

&ldquo;He's a talented, talented basketball player, and sometimes, especially when they're young like he is &mdash; he's young, but he has an old soul and he understands what's right, what's wrong and the right way to do things and all that.&rdquo;
Altogether, the 24-year-old has found a niche and a comfortability with this Kings team. A lot of that has to do with a consistent role with consistent minutes, which he has found the last couple of seasons between L.A. and Sacramento as opposed to the sporadic nature in the past when he was with the Charlotte Horntes.
&ldquo;It's the biggest relief, man,&rdquo; Monk admitted. &ldquo;I know when I'mma go in, I know when I'mma come out, I know when I'mma go back in again. So it's just a relief, and it just gives me way more confidence to go out there and play my game.&rdquo;
From a young age, Monk has always been passionate about his apparel. He told Basketball News that when he was a kindergartner living with his mom, his older brother Marcus &mdash; a former NFL wide receiver who played for the Chicago Bears &mdash; always rocked BAPE clothing line. Malik latched on to style because of that and has kept up to date with the latest fashion ever since.
On Friday, Monk came into Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse wearing a fuzzy skeleton sweater with black paints, matching shoes and some bling to top it off. Pregame, his teammates tried to figure out what brand he was going with.
&ldquo;Look man, he spends a lot of money on his clothes. They better look good. That's all I'mma say,&rdquo; Metu said with a chuckle.

&ldquo;If my fit not as up to how I want it, man, I feel like I'll go out there and be a little down. But I haven't done that this year. All my fits been pretty decent so far. Yeah man, it's always 'look good, feel good, play good,'&rdquo; Monk said.
Clearly, Malik Monk has been a positive influence in Sacramento. It&rsquo;s a big reason why they&rsquo;re in the thick of it in the Western Conference &mdash; and that doesn&rsquo;t seem to be changing anytime soon.
&ldquo;I just try to bring everybody life, man,&rdquo; Monk said. &ldquo;Losing streaks, it's gonna happen. It's a game of runs, especially in basketball. So I just try to make everybody feel the same every day. 'Cause we know we're gonna be together for the rest of the year, so I just try to make sure we're like this instead of like that.&rdquo;

Kyrie Irving&rsquo;s first press conference after returning from his suspension was met by a barrage of reporters seemingly throwing a series of questions at him that could have potentially resulted in him being suspended again.

One interpretation is that the reporters were just doing their job in asking Kyrie the questions that inquiring minds would like answered. However, another interpretation is that Kyrie asked (very politely) if the reporters could simply stick to questions about the actual game, and they seemingly ignored his request and continued to ask questions that could potentially get him in hot water once again &mdash; an intentional attempt to set him up.
I wanted to delve deeper into this topic, so I reached out to journalist Chuck Modiano, who is a senior writer for Deadspin and has also written for the New York Daily News.

Etan Thomas: Does it seem like the media is now picking on Kyrie?
Chuck Modiano: Let me first say that you have been doing a great job on social media covering this.
Thomas: Oh, I appreciate that.
Modiano: No problem. Well, there are definitely a couple of members who keep harping on it, but the problem is, they don&rsquo;t do that to other athletes. I don&rsquo;t think Jerry Jones is going to be peppered the same way. I know initially they asked him, but I doubt the questions will continue. I could be wrong, but we&rsquo;ll see. But the double standard always exists with Black athletes and it always has, and part of that double standard is the makeup of the press &mdash; and what the press finds noteworthy and not noteworthy to pursue. So yeah, it&rsquo;s definitely there and will continue to be there and we have to keep calling it out.
Thomas: I agree, but I don&rsquo;t see enough people calling it out and that&rsquo;s the part that frustrates me. It seems like it&rsquo;s just accepted. And let&rsquo;s take the actual content of everything that happened with Kyrie out of the discussion for a moment, and just compare this to how, say, Brett Farve was dealt with in the media. I mean, he didn&rsquo;t have to do anything &mdash; he didn&rsquo;t have to apologize or nothing?
Modiano: I think Brett Favre is a great recurring example. With Kyrie, it goes so far beyond the initial discussion of anti-semitism. It goes to something greater in media. The Black athlete is profitable and the Black athlete&rsquo;s perceived misbehavior is profitable. And we know this when a discussion should shift and it does not. So I&rsquo;ll give you an example. So there was a period of time where the discussion moved from Kyrie Irving to Jeff Bezos &mdash; let&rsquo;s hold Amazon accountable. He&rsquo;s making all this money off "Hebrews To Negroes." And let&rsquo;s form a petition, etc. And there were some famous actors joining in the charge. Rolling Stone actually had pictures of those actors, but most publications, even if the article was focused on Jeff Bezos and Amazon, still had the cover picture of Kyrie. So I said, "Well, that&rsquo;s not about perceived anti-semitism, that&rsquo;s about anti-Blackness." Because, again, the whole article was about Jeff Bezos and Amazon, so why is Kyrie on the cover picture? That was an editorial choice and that&rsquo;s when you have to examine the fact that anti-Blackness will get you more clicks and there is more profit in anti-Blackness.
Thomas: That&rsquo;s interesting. Now that you say that, I definitely noticed that as well. And to your point, there are a lot of Black media that participate in that as well. Right now, there are a lot of people trying to give Jerry Jones a pass. I just saw Stephen A. Smith and Jason Whitlock both defending him today. I actually tweeted about it.
Modiano: It&rsquo;s completely ridiculous. And listen, I am someone who has marched with former Nazis who are now against Nazis and are now on the anti-racism side and it&rsquo;s their life mission to flip other Nazis. So I am someone who believes to the greatest extent that reform is possible. But let&rsquo;s take Jerry Jones here, and put aside the fact that probably 95% of white people in Arkansas in 1957 more than likely shared a certain belief about Black people, I think we can safely say that. But not everyone joined a mob to terrorize Black students, so there is a difference between racist thoughts and racist actions. And it&rsquo;s important to remember that in 1954, the Brown vs. Board of Education was put into law, and the one of the ways white people would fight against that law was through mob action, and Jerry Jones was a part of that. So if you&rsquo;re going to tell me he&rsquo;s changed, I need to see it. I see his comments about [Colin] Kaepernick. I see the fact that he has never had a Black head coach. I see him donating half a million to Governor [Greg] Abbott&rsquo;s campaign. This doesn&rsquo;t sound like he has changed too much since 1957.
Thomas: And the same with Brett Favre. I haven&rsquo;t seen anything where he's tried to make amends after this $77 million Mississippi state-welfare-fund scandal or any evidence that he has changed. They say it&rsquo;s always something with Kyrie; well, it&rsquo;s always something with Brett Favre, right?

He has a long, ugly history and I&rsquo;m not just talking about outwardly supporting Donald Trump at the height of his racism and Charlottesville and Jan. 6th, or the inappropriate messages and nude pictures he sent to New York Jets game day host Ms. Sterger, but yes there is definitely enough history for there to be much more upheaval of outrage from the media. So we have to ask, why is the Brett Favre scandal not given the same attention and scrutiny as Kyrie? The answer could be simply that Brett Favre is not going to produce the amount of clicks that Kyrie will. But then you have to ask: why is Kyrie going to produce more clicks? Because Brett is retired and Kyrie is an active player? I don&rsquo;t think that&rsquo;s it. I think it&rsquo;s because of anti-Blackness. We have a white customer service base that likes to see Black athletes being denigrated and will use Black media talking heads, like the ones you named before, to do the actual denigrating. That&rsquo;s the bottom line. So some will say, "No, it&rsquo;s the anti-semitism that is a much bigger issue." Well, if that were the case, all forms of perceived anti-semitism would garner the same reaction that Kyrie did, and it doesn&rsquo;t.</div>

<div>Thomas: And to your point, let me read this <a href="https://twitter.com/shaunking/status/1596184440513777665" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tweet from Shaun King</a> that read: &ldquo;So we now know that Donald Trump just had dinner with one of the most explicit bigots and Holocaust-deniers in the world right now, Nick Fuentes. I need to see if Trump and the people who support him get the Kyrie Irving treatment now. I seriously doubt it." Now they can&rsquo;t say that Kyrie has more power and influence than Trump, so will there be a big outrage about Trump?&nbsp;</div>

<div>Modiano: We already know the answer to that. Of course there won&rsquo;t and Nick Fuentes is a proud white supremacist and racist. He is an actual Holocaust denier and has spewed actual anti-semetic rhetoric out of his mouth. And Trump has himself said a lot of perceived, I&rsquo;ll say, antisemitic statements. So in comparing the reaction of that to Kyrie, you&rsquo;re right; it&rsquo;s not the same outrage.&nbsp;A few years ago, I wrote an article with the New York Daily News asking, "Why are we not critiquing white athletes?" Whether it&rsquo;s Tom Brady with the Trump hat in his locker or Brett Favre posing in a picture with him on the golf course, where were those same reporters who pressed Kyrie then? Where were the pointed questions that we are seeing repeatedly with Kyrie? So if we are going to have a media that is critiquing athletes the way they are with Kyrie, ok that&rsquo;s fine, but let&rsquo;s do it with the white athletes too.&nbsp;</div>

<div>Thomas: So, how can Kyrie navigate through this? Because it seems like the media is going to continue to press him on topics where they&rsquo;re almost trying to play GOTCHA with him. He has to meet with the media, or he&rsquo;ll get fined. So should he just keep repeating the phrase, "Can you please only ask me basketball questions?" Or do the Marshawn Lynch ("I&rsquo;m just here so I won&rsquo;t get fined")?</div>

<div>Modiano: I&rsquo;ll tell you what, I thought he turned the Thanksgiving question on its head pretty nicely. I thought it was brilliant how he navigated that. He ended positively, he wished everyone a happy holiday, and he did it with a smile, but he also made the point clear: I&rsquo;m not personally celebrating Thanksgiving. And I think that&rsquo;s great because it now brings the much larger discussion that is not going on about the actual history of Thanksgiving and the treatment of indigenous people of this country, so I thought he navigated that question brilliantly.&nbsp;</div>

<div>Thomas: But do you think the media was again trying to pick at him? I tweeted about this and it got a very strong response. Anyone who has been even remotely following the NBA knows about Kyrie Irving&rsquo;s connection to his Native American heritage. When I saw that, I was like, "Are they just trolling Kyrie now?" They could&rsquo;ve asked any other player on the team that, but they ask him in particular? I just don&rsquo;t think they would&rsquo;ve asked Deni Avdija (the Washington Wizards forward who is Jewish) if he would like to wish everyone out there a Merry Christmas; I just personally don&rsquo;t think they would.&nbsp;</div>

<div>Modiano: Right, but I think collectively, it&rsquo;s no question the media has a double standard with Kyrie. It&rsquo;s abundantly clear. So I&rsquo;ll say it like this: I can&rsquo;t say definitively that it&rsquo;s a racial double standard, but I will say that it&rsquo;s worthy of an investigation of a possibly racial double standard. And it&rsquo;s not just Kyrie, there has been a racial double standard historically with Black athletes for decades.&nbsp;</div>

<div>Thomas: So let me ask you this: People like Shaq and Charles Barkley were very direct with their critique of Kyrie. I actually tweeted about this as well.&nbsp;</div>

<div>Thomas: (Laughing) Well, there&rsquo;s been a lot to cover, but it seems like people like Charles Barkley and those of his ilk are just not willing to move past it. He brought it up again last night, saying he was disappointed that more NBA players didn&rsquo;t come out and speak against him. I&rsquo;m just like... he has apologized, served his suspension, went through the entire ridiculous six-step criteria they laid out for him, met with Adam Silver, met with Joe Tsai, and they all gave him the stamp of approval that he is not anti-semitic (although he never said anything out of his mouth that was anti-semitic). He went through all of those steps, so how long will it be before the media as a collective whole stops trolling him?&nbsp;</div>

There are so many combinations of athlete activists they could&rsquo;ve gotten. Because they know what his position will be on the topic, so it doesn&rsquo;t matter that he doesn&rsquo;t have a rich history of social justice like all the athletes you mentioned before and interviewed in your book. They like the positions he takes so that will trump his actual qualifications. Same with Herschel Walker. But just think about it, they don&rsquo;t do that with white athletes; they don&rsquo;t turn them into the spokespersons for white America on race relations. Anybody know where Larry Bird stands on anything? Kevin McHale? Dirk? Jerry West? Chris Mullin? We have to question these networks who continue to put the mic in Charles Barkley&rsquo;s face but at the same time, we know the answer. It&rsquo;s because he is saying what they want to hear a Black person say. Anti-Black is anti Black whether it&rsquo;s on Fox News, Sean Hannity, Tucker Carlson, Laura Ingraham, Jason Whitlock or Charles Barkley.</div>

Has the media treated Kyrie Irving fairly? Etan Thomas sits down with journalist Chuck Modiano to discuss the coverage of Irving.

How long will the media continue to troll Kyrie Irving?

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) &mdash; The Golden State Warriors are playing dominant basketball for stretches, then struggling to defend during others.
Stephen Curry scored 28 of his 33 points during an 89-point first half, and the defending champions beat former top assistant Mike Brown and his Sacramento Kings 130-125 on Sunday night.
Curry, who recorded his third straight 30-point performance to start the season, scored 21 points in the second quarter with five 3-pointers and shot 11 for 22 overall, including 7 of 12 on 3s. The reigning NBA Finals MVP helped Golden State to its third-most points in any half in franchise history and second-most in a first half. The Warriors' 50 points in the second quarter were a franchise record and matched the third-most points in any period.
&ldquo;It was fun, 89 points in the first half, that's crazy,&rdquo; Jordan Poole said.
Curry has three straight 30-point games to start a season for the second time in his career, also done in 2018-19.
Sacramento cut a 26-point deficit down to four on Chimezie Metu&rsquo;s dunk with 1:04 left before Golden State held on.
&ldquo;We played at times brilliantly and we couldn&rsquo;t sustain it,&rdquo; coach Steve Kerr said. &ldquo;It was closer than it should have been, but I give Sacramento a lot of credit. Mike's doing a great job with those guys. They're fighting, they're competing. They've had three close losses now to start the year. ... We let our guard down and they took advantage of it.&rdquo;
Andrew Wiggins added 24 points with a driving slam to beat the final buzzer and Poole also scored 24 as the Warriors shot 51.7%. Klay Thompson was held to eight points on 3-for-10 shooting.
De&rsquo;Aaron Fox scored 26 after two 30-point games and Domantas Sabonis contributed 19 points and 14 rebounds, but didn't play in the fourth for winless Sacramento (0-3) in the second night of a back-to-back. The Kings, who lost 111-109 at home to the Clippers on Saturday night, attempted 100 shots Sunday and their three defeats have been decided by 14 total points.
&ldquo;We can&rsquo;t give up 50 points in the second quarter, or no quarters," guard Malik Monk said. "It&rsquo;s hard to win an NBA game like that.&rdquo;
Brown, in his first year as Kings coach, received his championship ring from Kerr in a pregame ceremony on the court along with Sacramento assistant Leandro Barbosa, who also was part of the Warriors' fourth title in eight years.
BROWN'S RETURN
Brown came down the hallway from the visiting locker room and snuck up on Kerr, then <a href="https://twitter.com/JanieMcCAP/status/1584320936072777728">they chuckled and hugged</a>.
The 52-year-old Brown filled in for Kerr for three playoff games last spring when Golden State's coach had COVID-19. Brown also went 11-0 guiding the Warriors through postseason games during the team&rsquo;s 2017 title run while Kerr was out dealing with debilitating symptoms stemming from complications of back surgery. Kerr returned for Game 2 of the NBA Finals that year.
&ldquo;Mike is brilliant. He&rsquo;s just got so much energy, so much love for the game, love for his job, for his work,&rdquo; Kerr said. &ldquo;He brings his enthusiasm every single day and that&rsquo;s what we enjoyed so much over the last five, six years, however long he was here, and he and I were really a perfect pair. He sort of covered up for my weaknesses and complemented me really well. I just loved being around him. Thrilled for him. It&rsquo;s a great opportunity.&rdquo;

Curry scores 33 for third 30-point game, Warriors beat Kings

CHICAGO &ndash; The National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA) and Intersport announced details for the inaugural Legends of Basketball Showcase, a college basketball quadruple header set for Dec. 17 at the United Center in Chicago.
As part of the four-game set, Northern Iowa will face Towson and Tulane will take on George Mason, while Dayton matches up against Wyoming and NC State will battle Vanderbilt. In the afternoon session, Northern Iowa will face Towson at Noon CT and Tulane will take on George Mason at 2:30 p.m., while the evening session will feature Dayton matching up against Wyoming at 7 p.m. and NC State battling Vanderbilt at 9:30 p.m. Television designations will be announced in the coming weeks.
Tickets for the Legends of Basketball Showcase, a college basketball quadruple header set for Dec. 17 at the United Center in Chicago, will go on sale Wednesday at 11 a.m. CT. Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.ticketmaster.com or by visiting the United Center box office. &nbsp; Tickets, which start at $29, will be sold by session, and one ticket will be good for both games of a session.&nbsp;

The eight programs competing in the Legends of Basketball Showcase have produced a combined 204 NBA Draft selections, while several coaches participating in the event have connections to the NBRPA, and vice versa.
At the helm of Vanderbilt is 18-year NBA veteran Jerry Stackhouse, the former No. 3 overall draft pick and two-time All-Star who appeared in 970 games for eight teams. Wyoming assistant coach Shaun Vandiver is a former first-round pick (25th overall) by the Golden State Warriors in the 1991 NBA Draft. George Mason head coach Kim English was drafted in the 2nd Round (44th overall) of the 2012 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons and Northern Iowa assistant coach Seth Tuttle played for the Miami Heat&rsquo;s Summer League team in 2015.
NBRPA Board Chairman Johnny Davis is a Dayton alum, leading the Flyers in scoring for three consecutive seasons (1973-76) before spending nearly four decades with the NBA as a player, front office executive, assistant and head coach. Additionally, two NBRPA Board Members are NC State alums. Thurl Bailey, who led the Wolfpack in both scoring and rebounding during the team&rsquo;s miracle 1983 NCAA Championship season before embarking on a 13-season NBA career, and Chucky Brown, who led NC State in scoring in 1988 (16.6 ppg) and rebounding in 1989 season (8.8 rpg).
It will be the first matchup between Northern Iowa and Towson and the third between Tulane and George Mason, with the teams splitting the prior two contests. Dayton and Wyoming have also met twice previously, with Dayton winning in December 2004 and Wyoming winning in January 2004. The contest between NC State and Vanderbilt will be the sixth all time, with the Commodores owning a 3-2 edge in the series. Each of the previous three matchups have been neutral site contests, with NC State winning the last matchup in 2018.

During a break between Golden State's Western Conference finals games against Dallas, then-Warriors top assistant Mike Brown jumped on a plane to San Diego to watch his new star De&rsquo;Aaron Fox work out and take the Sacramento guard and his family to lunch.
Brown got right back on a plane afterward to rejoin Golden State for playoff preparations.
At last Tuesday, Brown was formally introduced as the Kings' new coach, just one day after celebrating the Warriors' fourth championship in eight years with a victory parade through San Francisco.
&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve been heavily involved,&rdquo; Brown said of getting going with the Kings as the schedule permitted. &ldquo;I&rsquo;ve talked to every single player on multiple occasions.&rdquo;
Sacramento hired the well-traveled Brown in May but he stayed with the Warriors through their postseason run that ended with the franchise's fourth championship in eight years last Thursday night in the clinching Game 6 at Boston.
&ldquo;First of all, I&rsquo;d like to start out by thanking everyone in Warrior land,&rdquo; Brown said.
The 52-year-old Brown will be tasked with ending the league's longest playoff drought ever at 16 years. He takes over for previous Warriors top assistant and former Lakers coach Luke Walton, hired by the Kings in 2019 before his firing last November. Alvin Gentry took over on an interim basis before the Kings finished 30-52.
Sacramento's .366 winning percentage was its worst since the 2017-18 season.
Brown is determined to build a consistent winner in the state capital.
&ldquo;One of the main reasons that I was brought here was to bring some leadership in a lot of different areas,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I&rsquo;ve been with a lot of different teams in my 30 years. I&rsquo;ve experienced something that I believe can get organizations over the top, not just in one year but year in and year out, and that&rsquo;s having a winning culture. My job is to lead in that area. Every organization out there, in my opinion, has a soul. The stronger that soul is the better that organization will be.&rdquo;
Brown previously had two stints as head coach in Cleveland, where he guided the Cavaliers to the NBA Finals in 2007, and also coached the Los Angeles Lakers.
Since moving to Sacramento in 1985, the Kings have had only one stretch of success, making the playoffs in all eight seasons under coach Rick Adelman from 1999-2006. Adelman was fired in 2006 and remains the only coach in the Sacramento era to post a winning record in any season.
&ldquo;We conducted in the front office here a very robust, thorough, comprehensive process," Kings general manager Monte McNair said. &ldquo;We wanted to ensure that we found the right coach. We did a lot of research and it came down to three key things for us: experience, successful head coaching experience, relationships, the ability to build relationships across the organization, and leadership &mdash; leadership as a head coach and leadership for everything that we're trying to do here.&rdquo;
On several occasions, Brown stepped in for Warriors coach Steve Kerr, most recently when Kerr dealt with COVID-19 and missed three playoff games.
Now, it's time for a new chapter that he hopes will produce a regular contender much like where he has been.
And when someone congratulated Brown on the Warriors' title, Brown showed off his signature warm smile and cracked: &ldquo;Can you say that again?&rdquo;
&ldquo;I've got four,&rdquo; he added, holding up four fingers and chuckling.

March Madness is underway! If you missed any of the Day 1 action, here's a recap of what went down during Wednesday's games.

The top of this year's rookie class has been absolutely outrageous.&nbsp;
We've seen Evan Mobley put together a fringe All-Star (and All-Defensive team) case in year one. Scottie Barnes has blown his scoring projections out of the water, and looks like a bonafide <a href="https://www.raptorsrepublic.com/2022/01/13/scottie-barnes-and-star-power/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">star-in-training</a>.
Cade Cunningham shook off a slow start &mdash; now he's making wine out of water in a tough context. Franz Wagner showed the goods defensively early on, then proved to be much more scalable offensively than many people thought.&nbsp;
However, two rookies at the top of the board have had shakier-than-expected starts. Jalen Green is the obvious one. The learning curve on both ends &mdash; and the flux that roster has been in all season &mdash; has been steep. But the flashes have been tantalizing; there may not be five players in the league with a better first step, and it's hard not to believe in his combination of rim pressure and pull-up shooting truly coming together moving forward.
Jalen Suggs is the other. His first 21 games were filled with poor shooting nights and unfortunate turnovers, and that's before he suffered a fractured thumb that sidelined him for over a month.
That, combined with things out of Suggs' control &mdash; the controversial-at-the-time Scottie Barnes &gt; Suggs selection looking like a home run for Toronto, plus Wagner flat-out balling in his absence &mdash; made it easy for him to slide under the radar.

Suggs is back, though, and has looked pretty solid. He's averaging 15-6-5 over his past five games, showcasing the two-way potential that got him picked in the top-five to begin with.
Offensively, the most encouraging thing to track has been Suggs' growing comfort getting downhill. Before the New Year, Suggs averaged <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/players/drives/?Season=2021-22&amp;SeasonType=Regular%20Season&amp;PlayerExperience=Rookie&amp;sort=DRIVES&amp;dir=1&amp;DateTo=12%2F31%2F2021" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a shade under 10 drives</a> per contest while converting 35.5% of his shot attempts via drive. Since returning, his <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/players/drives/?Season=2021-22&amp;SeasonType=Regular%20Season&amp;PlayerExperience=Rookie&amp;sort=DRIVES&amp;dir=1&amp;DateFrom=01%2F01%2F2022" target="_blank" rel="noopener">drives are up,</a> and he's converting over 55% of his shots on drives. This may be surprising, but improving your drive volume&nbsp;and&nbsp;efficiency is typically a good thing.
The volume is up because he's become more determined, more fearless. The efficiency is up because he's using his build to bring the pain versus absorbing it. Shoulder chucks are becoming a more frequent tool in his kit &mdash; defenders better hope their chests are ready. He's also been experimenting with more extension finishes against rim protectors.

(The compilation above should give you a general idea, but I'd suggest watching the Magic's recent outing against the Sixers to get the full "Wow, Jalen really isn't&nbsp;scared" experience. Joel Embiid made him look silly a few times, but I appreciate the aggression.)
One of the benefits of Suggs getting more aggressive: his passing is starting to pop a little more on film. His potential assists are up (7.7 to 9.4) if you want to put a number on his progress. From a film perspective, he's hitting &mdash; and creating &mdash; windows more effectively.&nbsp;
You can see it in pick-and-roll, depending on his partner. If it's another perimeter player (think ghost screens), he's starting to hit his man a little quicker. With a traditional big, he's taking an extra dribble to suck in a defender before making a pass.

There are still warts, of course. Suggs is still trying to find his way as an intermediate scorer. Pull-up twos remain an adventure, and floaters aren't consistent for him yet. As he continues to figure out the rim stuff, having a mid-range counter would be nice to fall back on every once in a while.
The more obvious flag is turnovers, though that's 1) just about every rookie guard in the history of basketball and 2) something that should get better with more reps.&nbsp;
Suggs' turnover tape intrigues me. His passing turnovers are generally of the "Right man, wrong pass" variety. He gets caught in No Man's Land as a jump-passer, but that speaks to the lack of comfort he has in the middle versus any sort of aimlessness with the ball.
The thing to track is his handle. Ball pressure bothers him more than you'd like to see from a top-five pick with #LeadDawg potential. His handle limitations are exposed when he's asked to create in tight spaces.

Defensively, Suggs is a mixed bag right now. Stop me if you've heard&nbsp;that&nbsp;about a rookie before.
He's an interesting case because, unlike most rookie guards, he seems to be more impactful off the ball than on it.&nbsp;
You can see some of the football background come out when he's off the ball. He's a timely rotator, and is beyond his years as a "split the difference" guy on the weakside. As a point of attack guy, his effort is strong. He gets into a ball-handler's jersey. On top of being a strong dude, he also has pretty quick hands. Weak handles are liable to be picked at, literally.

But then a screen comes. And that's where the real fun begins.
For someone as smart as Suggs is, and as good as his effort is, he simply doesn't know how to fight over screens right now. Angle a pick correctly, and he'll swim his way right out of a play. He's much more comfortable going under &mdash; ducking, spinning, slithering inside &mdash; and meeting the ball-handler on the other side or contesting a shot after finishing his path.

The difference between the two methods are stark, right?
I'd imagine having a guy like Gary Harris as a vet could be a help to Suggs on the screen navigation front. Honestly, with his frame and effort level, he's a couple of "tricks of the trade" away from being solid at the point of attack. I wouldn't be too worried if I were a Magic fan.
I think that's the overall takeaway I have with Suggs, honestly. I just wouldn't be worried about him. The foundation of rim pressure, passing chops and working within the framework of a defensive scheme are there already. Tightening up the handle, the jumper and screen navigation techniques are important, but none of those things are out of reach for Suggs.
Between him and Wagner, the Magic look to have really nailed their draft this past summer.

There aren't many players who deserve to be mentioned alongside Michael Jordan. Kobe Bryant is one of the first names that comes to mind, mainly because of their eerily similar style of play. There&rsquo;s also LeBron James, who many believe is not just the greatest of his era but someone who could snatch the crown from Jordan.&nbsp;
Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, who played with Jordan on the Chicago Bulls, put his own player in the same sentence as Jordan: Stephen Curry. They are very different in terms of their play-style and they are rarely compared. However, Kerr compared the two because both Curry and Jordan have had so many notable plays that have come to define their respective eras.

Is Kerr biased? Perhaps. After all, his partnership with Curry produced three titles in five years (and the Warriors are once again the favorites to win it all this season). If everything goes as planned, Kerr might win his fourth title as a coach on top of the five rings he won as a player.&nbsp;
But Kerr&rsquo;s point has a lot of truth in it. When we think of Curry, images of logo three-pointers, no-look threes, broken records and constant off-ball movement come to mind. NBA teams have been chucking up more and more three-pointers in recent years, and Curry is a huge reason for that shift.
Now, highlight clips are not only filled with dunks, crossovers and acrobatic shots; they are also peppered with long-distance shots. Saying that Curry revolutionized how the game is played today may be an understatement.
Back in the '90s, Jordan had a similar impact throughout his career. When someone brings up MJ, you immediately think of his clutch shots, crazy hang-time, Air Jordans, 50-point games and string of championships. He inspired a generation of hoopers and his fingerprints are still all over the NBA.
Both players are winners who changed how the game is played and turned a ton of people into NBA fans with their incredible plays, so Kerr's comparison makes sense.

Shaquille O&rsquo;Neal and Charles Barkley have been two of the biggest critics of Ben Simmons since the start of the season.&nbsp;
&ldquo;One, he&rsquo;s not showing up. As a player, you have to be able to be real with yourself,&rdquo; O&rsquo;Neal <a href="https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/shaquille-oneal-calls-out-ben-simmons-amid-holdout-from-76ers-hes-going-about-it-all-wrong/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said on CBS Sports Network's Tiki and Tierney</a>. &ldquo;You need to be aggressive and he definitely got exposed last year in the playoffs, he didn&rsquo;t want to shoot.

&ldquo;You have to look in the mirror and say, &lsquo;Am I as good as I can be?&rsquo; He&rsquo;s going about it all wrong. He could have gone into the office, say &lsquo;Hey, my feelings are hurt. You guys didn&rsquo;t stick up for me. I&rsquo;d like to professionally ask for a trade.&rsquo; The question is, does anyone want him? I&rsquo;m not paying $200 million for a guy who will not be aggressive and will not shoot in playoff time.&rdquo;
Tuesday night on Inside the NBA, Shaq and Barkley continued their public criticism of Ben Simmons before the Milwaukee Bucks and Philadelphia 76ers tipped off. Barkley has sided with the 76ers and upper management, and feels they are doing everything possible to resolve the standoff. In Barkley&rsquo;s words:&nbsp;

They&rsquo;ve bеnt over backward to kiѕѕ this dudе&rsquo;ѕ ass. Now, it&rsquo;s timе thеy start kicking his ass. There&rsquo;s only two: You kiѕѕ ѕomebody&rsquo;s aѕѕ, or yоu kick their ass.&rdquo;
I sat down with Gilbert Arenas for "The Rematch," and he didn&rsquo;t mince words regarding Shaq and Barkley&rsquo;s consistent criticism of Ben Simmons.

Etan Thomas: I want to ask you about this Ben Simmons situation. Now, there's a lot. It's interesting. I <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/an-open-letter-to-ben-simmons-from-etan-thomas" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote an open letter to Ben Simmons</a>. And a lot of the feedback from people was that I was being too nice to Ben Simmons. And although I pointed out all of his missteps through this whole process, I didn't go just on full attack bashing him. And that's what a lot of people wanted. They wanted to have other people bash him. "He's terrible, he's weak, he's soft." And I didn't do any of that. I did the opposite of encouraging him that. "I hope that when you come out of this, that you come out with a Mamba Mentality and don't let nothing affect you," and everything like that, "But these were your missteps here all along this way." But it's interesting that so many people don't understand or can't sympathize, or even imagine how he feels.
Gilbert Arenas: Because they're looking at the basketball player, Ben Simmons. So I don't think people separate the basketball player from the human. Right? And once a Shaq or Charles Barkley say it, it becomes law. In fact, they were the same. If they want to call him a prima donna, you were the same prima donna when you were the man. It's crazy because [Simmons] is a quiet kid. He's not this rah-rah type of guy. He's a quiet kid who just wants to just play, and then if you don't [want] him, just trade me. If you want me just... He just goes with the flow.
I was with Ben a lot this summer, so I saw the work he put in. He was doing everything to get himself ready. I saw the work ethic and I'm like, "Man, you can actually shoot. You actually can shoot. You actually have form. You don't have this wicked form that's like released high. You actually have a great form. Your feet planted." So alright, what's going on here?
Etan Thomas: Let's talk about when he came back and addressed the team and said that he wasn't mentally ready to play. And I know what you're thinking, but I felt that honestly, and this was my opinion. I felt that was him being honest with them and saying not that he had mental health issues, but he basically said: Mentally, I'm not ready to come back and mess with y'all. And I thought that was a very smart move on his part because of a lot of reasons; because he could have came back and you don't know what he would've done. If he would've came back, and I'm really still beefing with you, like I'm still thinking in my mind that you threw me under the bus over here after the game and I'm looking at you &mdash; I might just crack you across your head with a chair.&nbsp;
So he's telling you, Listen, I'm telling y'all right now I'm not mentally ready to come back here with y'all. You know what I mean? And now, everybody else jumped to, "Oh, he is using mental health issues and excuse." ...But he didn't say mental health. He said he's not mentally ready to come back. And the part that I do have to say &mdash; because I'm critical of the media a lot &mdash; I did see where Shaq was on a few nights ago, and he said he had to backtrack some of the criticism that he had and educate himself on mental health issues. Even though that's not what Ben Simmons said [or meant]. But [Shaq] said, "I had to backtrack, and I am not going to bash him or anybody else that are dealing with different things and getting their mental health issues correct on the same line."
And that's what Shaq said, "So I'm backing all the way off." I got to respect that, you know what I mean? Because it means that he's going back and saying, "Okay, I was wrong for what I said earlier." I wish Stephen A. Smith would do that because when he got on &mdash; everybody remembers right after it happened &mdash; it was reported that that Ben Simmons said that he couldn't come back because he wasn't mentally ready to come back. Stephen A. Smith went right on, and he <a href="https://youtu.be/7lWvdizPXr4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">went on this big rant</a> like he always does. [Smith] said, "Why didn't he say anything about mental health before? Why didn't he say this before? Why all now?"
And so he's questioning publicly, on the biggest platform in the basketball world, the validity of what Ben Simmons was saying. So that, in turn, made a lot of people then start repeating what Stephen A. Smith said. And they were literally quoting him. And I think that's where the media has a responsibility to not attempt to sway the public against players. And that, again, <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/kwame-brown-stephen-a-smith-stephen-jackson-matt-barnes-charlemagne-etan-thomas-washington-wizards-media" target="_blank" rel="noopener">going back to what Kwame Brown's point was and his issue was</a>. It was not just Stephen A. Smith, but <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/former-nba-gm-confirms-false-narratives-hurt-kwame-brown-others" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the media in general</a>, when they do that. So what was your take on when [Simmons] said he was mentally not ready to play?
Gilbert Arenas: Okay, so you got to understand where the ESPNs and all these guys stand. That's their job to sway the public. You got to remember: They don't need the athlete. They don't need us to report about us.
Etan Thomas: Oh, that's true.
Gilbert Arenas: Right? So they don't need us. So it's like, "I can say you're good. I can say you're bad. But I don't need to have a conversation with you to do that." So these guys in the media don't need the athletes. So they don't need to talk to Kyrie [Irving] and Kevin Durant, but they get to report on them all the time. Half of these reporters couldn't even get a sit-down with these players at this point in their careers. You have bashed these guys for so long that they don't want nothing to do with you, but it's still going to make your point against them. Charles Barkley go up there and Shaq and talk about prima donnas: "Y'all are too soft on these guys."
Etan Thomas: Yeah, I hate that.
Gilbert Arenas: First of all, Shaquille, didn't you push to get a trade from Orlando because a guy got more popular than you? That's prima donna. I want to move because he got a Penny [Hardaway] doll? I've seen your commercials back in the day where the Penny doll was on the couch and you slapped it off. Now, you guys are bickering. I was a Penny fan. That is bickering. That is babying. So the things that some of the older guys go at the young guys, I'm like, you did the same exact thing, so you know how he feels. So since you know how he feels, you should be able to help him through this process because you know what's going to actually happen at the end of this.

Which NBA players could have realistically played in the NFL?

When you&rsquo;re 7-feet tall, have a 7-foot-4 wingspan and average 2.9 blocks on a nightly basis, chances are you&rsquo;re going to be pegged as a center.
But pigeonhole Evan Mobley at your own risk.
&ldquo;I feel like I'm a little underestimated sometimes, but I'm just here to prove all them wrong," said Mobley, who was taken No. 3 overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2021 NBA Draft. &ldquo;I feel like my guard skills and ball-handling [are abilities] a lot of seven-footers don&rsquo;t have, as well as my shooting. Those few attributes are some that most seven-footers don&rsquo;t have and more guards, I would say, have.
&ldquo;Me growing up, I've played up [a level] a lot, so I had to be a guard a lot of the times &ndash; 'cause I wasn't always the tallest 'cause I was playing up with my brother. And then also, having my dad as a coach, he taught me a lot of guard skills growing up; had good fundamentals and a good base. As I kept growing and growing and got taller, that just stayed with me, and that's how I am the player I am today."
&ldquo;It's the combination of size and skill; you just don't see that regularly,&rdquo; Cavs head coach J.B. Bickerstaff said of Mobley. &ldquo;When you put a guy in a 7-foot frame &ndash; one, I love just watching the passes that he makes. Like when he puts the ball on the floor, most typical 7-footers, they see the floor and they see the rim. And when I watched him play, when he put the ball on the floor, he saw where the defense was first, and how that created open areas for his teammates.&rdquo;
There&rsquo;s been an influx of young talent in Cleveland over the last four seasons, and Mobley may very well be the star that the franchise has been thirsting for ever since LeBron James&rsquo; second departure. Thanks to some lottery luck, Cleveland landed the third overall selection, which is the highest the Cavaliers have picked since the 2014 NBA Draft.
&ldquo;There&rsquo;s weight definitely... [but] I try not to focus on all the pressure,&rdquo; Mobley said of being the No. 3 pick. &ldquo;[I] just want to come here, do the best I can and just get a lot of wins, hopefully become Rookie of the Year, get a lot of Rookie of the Months throughout this whole entire process.&rdquo;
&ldquo;We&rsquo;re super fortunate,&rdquo; Cavs general manager Koby Altman said at Mobley&rsquo;s introductory press conference on Friday afternoon. &ldquo;We were sitting at the third pick and I told my guys all the time, &lsquo;There&rsquo;s no way Evan Mobley gets to us at 3.&rsquo; That&rsquo;s how incredibly talented this young man is.&rdquo;

Though he is aware of how much potential Mobley has, Altman insists the 7-foot, 215-pounder will have an immediate impact in Cleveland as a rookie. When asked about what he likes about Mobley&rsquo;s game, Bickerstaff chuckled.
&ldquo;Everything. That&rsquo;s the easy one,&rdquo; Bickerstaff said. &ldquo;Obviously, the most important thing is when you do your background and you talk to people you trust about Evan and his family, the most important thing is the type of people that they are. You can go to bat with people that you know are genuine, people you know that care about more than themselves and when you&rsquo;re building a team that has that type of character, the chemistry grows more quickly, their willingness to do more for one another grows more quickly and that&rsquo;s how you translate to wins. That&rsquo;s where you start.
&ldquo;We&rsquo;re finding the world is smaller than we thought because we have a lot of close connections all the way through family members and things like that where we were able to get a lot of great intel about the people we&rsquo;re dealing with. Then, obviously, you throw in the skill set. You&rsquo;ve got a guy who is 7-feet tall, who can handle the ball, pass the ball, playmaker, defend, can score, the list goes on and on about his capabilities. But what it does is it gives you a ton of versatility as a coach.&rdquo;
Let&rsquo;s start with Mobley&rsquo;s instincts in the point-forward role. He&rsquo;s going to have different ways to impact this Cavs' offense with two guards who are highly aggressive in their own ways. There&rsquo;s Collin Sexton, technically the elder statesman of the rebuild, who has found a groove playing off the ball as a baseline cutter and improved secondary-action passer. Then there&rsquo;s Darius Garland, who was very effective in his sophomore season as a facilitator and lob specialist, as well as from beyond the arc as a deadeye three-baller.
When those two feed Mobley, who could be stationed at the elbows or even at the nail, chances are he&rsquo;ll return the favor with a bullet off-ball or a dribble hand-off.
&ldquo;I feel like me and Collin Sexton and Darius Garland are going to have great chemistry on the floor,&rdquo; Mobley said. &ldquo;Me just making plays for them, they're making plays for me,&nbsp;pick-and-roll actions, all that. I feel like we're just gonna have a great dynamic duo, I guess, with all my teammates, as well as Jarrett Allen.&rdquo;
Already given the nickname Tower City, presuming Allen (a restricted free agent) returns to the Cavs as the team expects, Mobley and his big-man partner &ndash; along with Isaac Okoro or Larry Nance Jr. &ndash; will establish a defensive frontcourt that is as intimidating (and versatile) as any in the league.

At first glance, one might think that playing Allen and Mobley together would be clunky. However, in knowing their stylistic differences, it might not be a crazy idea.
Allen is somebody who thrives on the block and in the paint, playing clean-up guy, making solid decisions and acting with low usage. Mobley, on the other hand, can stretch things out a little more, allowing Garland, Sexton and Okoro to move without the ball in their hands. It wouldn&rsquo;t be surprising to see Mobley facing up or attacking when given a gap of space, either.
&ldquo;We were having conversations earlier about the teams that win in this league and how they win and you go back and look at it, and the teams that win the paint are typically the successful teams at both ends of the floor,&rdquo; Bickerstaff said. &ldquo;When you throw in a guy like Evan with Jarrett and Isaac in our group, they give you an opportunity to win the paint. That translates to success. Those are things that we are excited about. But the fun part for us as coaches is watching the growth and helping young men reach their potential. We have been given a heck of a beginning and a great opportunity with great upside.
"I think history has shown us that size and skill beats small and skill. If you go back just recently with the Lakers&rsquo; [championship] team, they had big guys and then they threw Anthony Davis at the 4, who was skilled. Their size helps, but they gotta have that skill. They gotta be able to play-make. They gotta be able to pass. They gotta be able to shoot. So if you can accumulate enough of that, you can overcome everybody wanting to go and play small-ball basketball. He gives us that opportunity because he can switch. A lot of guys when it comes to the end of the game, big guys can't play. We're fortunate enough in Evan and Jarrett that we have two big guys that can switch on guards and keep guards in front of 'em. That gives 'em an opportunity to stay on the floor at the end of the game. They both also have a skill set, so if you decide that you want to switch and throw small guys on 'em, we'll just throw the ball up in the air, play jump ball and let those guys go tip it in. So I think we're fortunate with the guys that we have and obviously with Evan, and the combination of him and Jarrett together.&rdquo;

As rookies transition to the NBA, they usually have the hardest time with the amount of games and the demand of the season itself, which includes adjusting to the physicality that comes with playing against grown men for a full season. Mobley has the size, but he&rsquo;ll have to put on some weight to better match-up against the brawn of many in the Association.
&ldquo;I feel like just staying in the gym, practicing, working with the weight coach and all that will just help me develop my skill physically, as well as mental focus as well,&rdquo; Mobley said. &ldquo;Because I know the season is very long, and mentally, it could be draining.&rdquo;
Seeing the league trend away from allowing contact in the lane, Bickerstaff already has plans on how to use Mobley within his offense.
&ldquo;What we have to do is play him to his strengths, and people can't hit what they can't catch,&rdquo; Bickerstaff said. &ldquo;So putting him in space, allowing him to use his speed and those things can help him be successful&hellip; [The NBA] likes to see skill, and they like to see guys be in attack mode. So Evan, with his ability to put the ball on the floor, can put a ton of pressure on defenses.
&ldquo;So now if he puts the ball [on the deck], he catches it at the elbow or the top of the key, and now he&rsquo;s straight-line driving, defensive players have to show their hands because they're not allowed to touch and not allowed to be physical and impede his progress. So we'll put him in a position where his skill set is an advantage and now the defense is at a disadvantage, where they can&rsquo;t put their hands on him and touch him and be physical.&rdquo;
Not even a day after he heard Adam Silver call his name, Mobley arrived in Cleveland to a sea of fans when his plane touched down. Within the organization, he said that his new Cavaliers teammates welcomed him with a phone call after he was drafted. (Mobley is actually reunited with Okoro, an old friend from USA Basketball&rsquo;s gold-medal-winning 2018 U17 club.)
&ldquo;The past 12 hours have been crazy,&rdquo; Mobley said. &ldquo;A lot of media, a lot of crazy moments, my name being called, celebrations, all that, not a lot of sleep. Just been amazing. When I came here, saw the whole facility and I just loved it here... It&rsquo;s gradually sinking in.&rdquo;
The soft-spoken Mobley covered everything from playing one-on-one with his brother, Isaiah, to growing up to accomplishing a dream that began to feel realistic when he reached high school. He always felt it would come true.
"I feel like I always had confidence in myself,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;The way I portray myself, I feel like some people may not see it, but I always have confidence in myself. I'm a very confident person.&rdquo;
This self-assuredness was on display several days before the draft, when he made a bold prediction while speaking with reporters.
"I think I'll be a generational player that no one has really seen before," Mobley confidently stated. "That's what I aspire to be, and I'm just going to keep working and staying in the gym until I get there."
Now, his chance is finally here in Cleveland.
And remember, it&rsquo;d be wise to let his game do the talking.
