Through two weeks of the WNBA season, where does each team stack up and what are some prime takeaways?

As down as they felt after blowing two chances to make the playoffs, the Los Angeles Clippers can&rsquo;t wait for next season.
That&rsquo;s when a healthy Kawhi Leonard is expected back in the lineup, alongside Paul George and Norman Powell.
&ldquo;We get our main guys back,&rdquo; coach Tyronn Lue said. &ldquo;I mean, we can be dangerous.&rdquo;
Leonard didn't play during the Clippers' roller coaster of a season that ended in a 105-101 play-in loss to the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday night. George didn't either, after entering the league's health and safety protocols earlier in the day.
Leonard could only watch as the Clippers blew a 13-point lead in the fourth quarter after letting a lead slip away in losing to Minnesota in the first play-in game.
George missed a large chunk of the season while injured and Powell was out for a couple months after joining the team in a February trade. Luke Kennard, the league's 3-point percentage leader, missed both play-in games with a sore hamstring.
The Clippers still managed to finish 42-40, staging several thrilling double-digit comebacks in the second half of games.
SUPPORTING CAST
Reggie Jackson provided a steadying presence for a team wracked by injuries and COVID-19 issues that caused players to miss 385 total games. He averaged 16.8 points and 4.8 assists without Leonard and George serving as the primary playmakers. They'll be back to those roles next season.
&ldquo;The sky&rsquo;s the limit when you get those two,&rdquo; Jackson said. &ldquo;It's going to be about hopefully getting them healthy, meshing, and everybody improving individually. I can't help but smile already thinking about next year.&rdquo;
Marcus Morris said the team needs a backup point guard to contend for a championship.
Big man Ivica Zubac started all 76 games he played in, averaging 10.3 points and 8.5 rebounds.
REBOUNDING WOES
The Clippers struggled all season with rebounding, ranking 22nd out of 30 teams with 51.3 per game. They allowed opponents too many offensive boards which led to second-chance points.
Against the Pelicans, they were outrebounded by nine and outscored by seven on second-chance points.
IDLE LUE
Lue is missing the playoffs for the first time as an assistant or head coach.
His ability as a quick-thinking tactician willing to change up the game plan has been hailed by his players and rival coaches. The latest example was Lue's decision to go small in the second half against the Pelicans, leading the Clippers to outscore them 38-18 in the third quarter.
&ldquo;His energy is infectious,&rdquo; said Robert Covington, who came along with Powell in the February trade. &ldquo;He knows how to pick guys up, keep them motivated. You want a coach like that.&rdquo;
FUTURE ROSTER
Covington said he wants to return next season. The veteran is an athletic wing who can play big and could partner well with a healthy Leonard and George.
Isaiah Hartenstein is set to become a free agent and proved a reliable backup to Zubac while showing a deft touch from 3-point range.
Nicolas Batum is the lone Clipper with a player option for next season. He became a frequent starter with all the injuries.
Amir Coffey and Jay Scrubb are set to become restricted free agents this summer. Coffey came up big at times this season and defends well. Scrubb had season-ending surgery on his right foot in February.

Clippers look ahead to return of Leonard next season

The NBA sent four teams home from its Play-In Tournament after Friday night, but all four are poised to contend next season.
Though the Charlotte Hornets, Cleveland Cavaliers and San Antonio Spurs exited early, their trio of All-Star guards and exciting young cores mean all three should be back in the hunt &mdash; provided they beef up their rosters in the offseason. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Clippers weren't supposed to make it this far without their franchise cornerstones; that only creates more buzz surrounding a 2022-23 championship contender.
What can these franchises do this offseason to set themselves up for success? I've written up some summer plans for all four squads, including draft assets (via Tankathon), potential free agents (via Spotrac) and a central team-building question (via my deranged mind). If you missed last week, I did the same for the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/summer-plans-for-the-nbas-nonplayoff-teams" target="_blank" rel="noopener">10 teams who did not crack the NBA postseason</a>.

CHARLOTTE HORNETS
Draft assets:&nbsp;First-round pick, First-round pick via Pelicans, Second-round pick, Second-round pick via Toronto (if 55-60)
Potential free agents:&nbsp;Montrezl Harrell, Isaiah Thomas, Miles Bridges (restricted), Cody Martin (restricted), Arnoldas Kulboka (restricted), Scottie Lewis (restricted)
Central question:&nbsp;How can the Hornets construct an interior defense?
Charlotte's bottom-10 defense doomed the franchise several times in the regular season and, ultimately, in the Play-In loss to Atlanta. The Hornets gave up boatloads of at-rim attempts and three-pointers, and simply looked like turnstiles at times. Improvement is necessary across the board, but an on-paper view highlights a clear need for upgrades inside.
Mason Plumlee is a fine basketball player, but he's not anchoring a high-level NBA defense. Neither is Montrezl Harrell, and 2021 first-round pick Kai Jones barely touched the floor in Charlotte. The Hornets don't have a whole lot of salary flexibility with big-money deals in place for Gordon Hayward and Terry Rozier. Miles Bridges' restricted free agency is also a key offseason focal point.&nbsp;
Though the Hornets likely can't throw outright money at a Deandre Ayton-level restricted free agent, perhaps they could work a sign-and-trade for a lesser-known young talent. Maybe Mo Bamba fits the bill from Orlando? Charlotte was tied to trade rumors surrounding Myles Turner before the trade deadline, and the front office could also elect to sign a veteran at a mid-level exception.
Regardless of the pathway, the Hornets have needed to address the center position for years now. With a playoff leap now the expectation in 2022-23, they can't afford to let another summer slip away.
CLEVELAND CAVALIERS
Draft assets:&nbsp;First-round pick, Second-round pick via Spurs, Second-round pick via Heat
Potential free agents:&nbsp;Ed Davis, Rajon Rondo, Brandon Goodwin, Collin Sexton (restricted), Moses Brown (restricted), RJ Nembhard (restricted), Dean Wade (team option)
Central question:&nbsp;What is Collin Sexton's future in Cleveland?
The Cavaliers may have slid out of the playoffs, but this was a banner year for the franchise's long-term trajectory. Darius Garland emerged as a cornerstone point guard, Evan Mobley might win Rookie of the Year, and the frontcourt pairing with Jarrett Allen looks to be a mainstay in the Eastern Conference. Injuries ultimately derailed what was a top-four seed. Most of the rotation is under contract and under 30, hinting at continued growth.

This seaon's leap makes the situation with Sexton... difficult. Let's not forget that the combo guard is a season removed from a 24-point-per-game season as an efficient primary scorer, and that the Cavs were 19th in Offensive Rating this year. Sexton can meaningfully boost Cleveland simply as a bucket-getter, nevermind if he keeps improving as a playmaker.
What kind of contract do the Cavs offer to a 23-year-old who missed nearly a full season with a knee injury though? If a desperate team decides to throw money at Sexton to force the franchise to match, is there a limit to the front office's willingness? What would an extension mean for Isaac Okoro and Caris LeVert?&nbsp;
Sexton is one of the biggest dominoes in the upcoming offseason, and arguably the most unpredictable.
LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS
Draft assets:&nbsp;Second-round pick
Potential free agents: Robert Covington, Rodney Hood, Isaiah Hartenstein, Amir Coffey (restricted), Xavier Moon (restricted), Ivica Zubac (team option), Nic Batum (player option)
Central question:&nbsp;What does a fully-healthy 10-man rotation look like?
Nobody expected the Clippers to be a playoff contender without Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, and they still almost cracked the postseason with the supporting cast chipping in. L.A. made a splash at the trade deadline by adding Norman Powell and Robert Covington, two players who conceivably make sense next to the franchise's two stars.
This roster is deep. It's a great problem to have, but it's still a problem with several rotation options potentially hitting free agency. Covington will likely command a solid new deal as one of the league's more reliable two-way complements, and Batum could easily decline his $3.3 million team option in search of a raise. Ivica Zubac and Isaiah Hartenstein may both hit free agency; what would happen to the center rotation in that case?
The Clippers have Leonard, George, Powell, Reggie Jackson, Luke Kennard, Terance Mann and Marcus Morris locked down for next season. That's already seven rotation-caliber players, and it doesn't account for leaps from young talents like Brandon Boston Jr., Jason Preston or Amir Coffey. A roster crunch is inbound, and the organization can't let a quality addition slip away as it positions itself for title contention next season.
SAN ANTONIO SPURS
Draft assets:&nbsp;First-round pick, first-round pick via Raptors, first-round pick via Celtics, second-round pick via Lakers
Potential free agents:&nbsp;Lonnie Walker IV (restricted), Devontae Cacok (restricted), Joe Wieskamp (restricted), DJ Stewart Jr. (restricted), Robert Woodard II (restricted)
Central question:&nbsp;How do the Spurs toe the line between developmental patience and consolidation?
San Antonio valiantly fought to get to the Play-In Tournament before losing to New Orleans, but also had one of the more underrated developmental seasons across the roster. Dejounte Murray made his All-Star leap and Jakob Poeltl established himself as <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/jakob-poeltl-san-antonios-newest-watchful-protector" target="_blank" rel="noopener">one of the league's better rim-protectors</a>; the Spurs collectively were just a tick under league-average on both ends of the floor, per Cleaning the Glass.
One of the NBA's youngest rosters is well on track and about to receive another influx of potential. San Antonio could use its three first-rounders (including its own lottery pick) to add to the frontcourt or find another lead guard. However, the Spurs already have 12 players locked down for next season under at least partial guarantees, and 11 of them are under 30. They have a pathway to over $24 million in salary cap space this summer should they move on from restricted free agents like Walker.&nbsp;
There's an avenue, with draft picks, young players and cap space, for San Antonio to make a serious splash. Is that in the programming for this franchise, though? San Antonio hasn't acquired a star via trade in several years, unless you want to count adding DeMar DeRozan in the Kawhi Leonard blockbuster. At the same time, there are only so many minutes to go around for the young guns, especially if the Spurs think they can compete for the playoffs.

Summer plans for the Spurs, Hornets, Cavaliers and Clippers

The Los Angeles Clippers face the Minnesota Timberwolves tonight to determine which team will take the seventh seed in the Western Conference playoffs and which team will need to face either the New Orleans Pelicans or San Antonio Spurs for the eighth seed. While the Clippers may ultimately fail to quality for the postseason, they have battled through injuries all season and are now primed to be a dangerous dark horse in the West with the recent return of Paul George and Norman Powell (and the possible return of Kawhi Leonard down the road).&nbsp;
The Clippers will have their hands full against the Timberwolves, who have a strong core of young talent that has taken on the gritty personality of former Clippers point guard Patrick Beverley. But Los Angeles has developed a stingy personality throughout the season, putting together several big comeback wins. And now, with George and Powell healthy, they add some much-needed firepower.
George, in particular, will be instrumental for the Clippers. He received ridicule for his lackluster performance in the Bubble, but George has looked spry since his return from a torn UCL in his shooting elbow and could carry this team like he did last year in the postseason. In his first game back, George posted 34 points, 6 assists, 4 steals, 2 assists and 1 block on 50% shooting from the field and 66.7% from beyond the arc. His ability to run the offense as a primary playmaker and scoring threat addresses one of the biggest issues the Clippers struggled with all season. Reggie Jackson has been the team&rsquo;s primary scorer and playmaker throughout most of the season, but it left the offense sputtering at times, with the team often surrendering leads or creating huge deficits.&nbsp;
The Clippers made a habit of starting off slowly or going through long scoring droughts. With George and Powell bolstering the lineup, the Clippers now have more options to run their offense through. While the team has several talented offensive players, no one could replicate the offensive abilities of George so, anytime Jackson struggled, the Clippers&rsquo; offense staggered.&nbsp;
George and Powell have also bolstered the team&rsquo;s defense, adding more length and physicality on the wing. George has been generating several deflections per game, jumping passing lanes and turning defense into easy offense in transition. Powell doesn&rsquo;t have George&rsquo;s length, but he is a gritty defender and has meshed quickly within the Clippers&rsquo; defense.&nbsp;

The sample size is small, but the early numbers for the Clippers since George came back are impressive. In seven games since George returned to action, the Clippers are first in offensive rating, sixth in defensive rating and first overall in net rating. These numbers cannot be relied on to make any definitive predictions about the Clippers&rsquo; matchup with Minnesota or their prospects in the postseason given the small sample size (and considering several teams played limited lineups), but the stats are encouraging. This is especially true when you consider that the Clippers were 22nd in net rating from the time George suffered his elbow injury until his return.&nbsp;
The Clippers&rsquo; shooting has been especially impressive recently. Since George&rsquo;s return, the Clippers are second in True Shooting percentage (64.7%), first in three-pointers made per game (18) and first in three-point percentage (46.5%). Luke Kennard led the league in three-point shooting this season but is now sidelined with a hamstring injury. His loss could be an issue for the Clippers, but the person most likely to absorb his minutes is Amir Coffey, who has been on a tear in his most recent outings. In the Clippers&rsquo; season finale, Coffey posted 35 points, 13 rebounds, 7 threes (on 10 attempts), 5 assists and a block. This is another reason why the Clippers are such a wildcard in the West. Should the Clippers advance to the first round, Kennard would likely be back in the lineup and Coffey would probably only play a few minutes.&nbsp;
The roster is deep, featuring more than 10 veteran contributors who produce at a high level and have played effectively within their respective roles. With George back as the team&rsquo;s number-one option and Powell playing exceedingly well in his limited action as a Clipper, there is reason to believe this team is peaking at the exact right time.&nbsp;

Then, there is the Kawhi factor.
Clippers head coach Ty Lue recently said that Kawhi has not advanced beyond individual workouts. However, Bill Simmons of The Ringer recently stated that he <a href="https://twitter.com/ClippersLead/status/1513605411483521026" target="_blank" rel="noopener">has heard</a> that Leonard is now doing three-on-three workouts, which could indicate he is ramping up his rehab and moving closer to game action. Also, ESPN's Ohm Youngmisuk recently <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/33579571/nba-playoffs-injury-updates-steph-curry-zion-williamson-anthony-davis-more" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that Leonard may be able to return if the Clippers make it out of the Play-In Tournament.
If the Clippers advance to the first round and Leonard is able to return at some point, this team conceivably could matchup favorably against any opponent. It&rsquo;s still not clear whether Leonard will return and what sort of condition he will be in, but the possibility of Leonard returning has to be scary for the Western Conference contenders.
With George playing at a high level, the Clippers have a puncher&rsquo;s chance of beating anyone on any given night. With a healthy Leonard, they become a huge threat that&rsquo;s much better than their 42-40 record indicates.
The Clippers have been hit harder by injuries this season than arguably any other team. As of April 8, the Clippers' players combined to miss 383 games this season, which is the <a href="https://twitter.com/ManGamesLostNBA/status/1512572823679774736" target="_blank" rel="noopener">third-most</a> in the NBA (trailing only the Orlando Magic and Indiana Pacers). And when you factor in that their stars were often the ones who were sidelined, it's no surprise that the Clippers <a href="https://twitter.com/ManGamesLostNBA/status/1512572696537845760" target="_blank" rel="noopener">led the league</a> in lost VORP (Value Over Replacement Player) this season.
Now, they are getting healthy at the right time and have a shot to make an improbably deep playoff run. A lot of things need to turn in their favor, but with a little luck, Paul George and the Clippers could make this one of the more interesting playoff races in recent memory.&nbsp;

The Clippers are getting healthy and looking scary at the perfect time, making them the ultimate dark horse entering the playoffs.

The Clippers are the Western Conference's ultimate wildcard

For all the strides the Minnesota Timberwolves made this season on both ends of the floor, proving themselves as a team on the rise with plenty of untapped potential, their entry into the NBA playoffs has still yet to be secured.
Paul George and the Los Angeles Clippers present a significant roadblock.
&ldquo;He takes them to a whole other level,&rdquo; Timberwolves coach Chris Finch said.
The confident team that reached the Western Conference finals last year &mdash; and beat the Wolves three times in November when George was healthy &mdash; has the seven-time All-Star back in the lineup after a three-month absence with an elbow injury.
The Clippers visit the Wolves on Tuesday night in a play-in game for the No. 7 seed and a first-round date with Memphis. The loser must turn around and beat the San Antonio-New Orleans winner to get the No. 8 seed and a matchup with league-leading Phoenix, or else begin their offseason with the rest of the lottery-bound teams.
&ldquo;We stop Paul George, we win the game,&rdquo; said Anthony Edwards, who will likely have the primary responsibility of guarding the 12-year veteran wing.
George had 76 points, 25 rebounds, 18 assists and four steals over those three earlier victories by 11, 20 and 27 points. Minnesota won by 18 in the last matchup in January when George was out.
The Clippers, who finished four games behind the Wolves, have measurably more postseason experience to counteract the home-court advantage.
&ldquo;I don&rsquo;t really believe in that,&rdquo; LA coach Tyronn Lue said. &ldquo;One game, anyone can get hot or we could have a bad shooting night. We can&rsquo;t ease into the game. We've got to be ready to go from the jump.&rdquo;
The Clippers recently welcomed back another integral player, Norman Powell, from a broken foot that sidelined him for 22 games shortly after he was acquired in a trade with Portland.
&ldquo;We're in a good place,&rdquo; Lue said. &ldquo;Got to continue playing the right way.&rdquo;
The Wolves only have Karl-Anthony Towns left from their 2017-18 team that lost in the first round to Houston, the only appearance in the playoffs since 2004 for the long-woebegone franchise. The fans have begun to come back and make the arena loud again, with Towns, Edwards and the rest of the roster giving them reasons to repeat their visits.
&ldquo;This is a great sports town,&rdquo; said Finch, who signed a multi-year contract extension on Monday. &ldquo;If you play hard and you play the right way and you do the right things, they&rsquo;ll support you.&rdquo;
WELL-VERSED
The addition of defensive ace and emotional leader Patrick Beverley this season has given the Wolves a big boost, and he's conveniently the most knowledgeable person in the organization about the ins and outs of the Clippers. Beverley spent the previous four seasons with LA. Two trades &mdash; the first one to Memphis &mdash; sent him to Minnesota.
&ldquo;He talks a lot of trash, but he can back it all up,&rdquo; Towns said. &ldquo;So shoutout to him, what he&rsquo;s done, what he&rsquo;s brought this team.&rdquo;
ROUGH STUFF
The Clippers were able to disrupt Towns and his flow with the offense in their matchups this season, one of the first opponents to find success by sending a smaller forward &mdash; in their case, Nicolas Batum &mdash; to defend the All-Star center with a physical approach to the post.
&ldquo;The Batum wrestling match&rdquo; was how Finch described it, with a wry smile.
KAWHI NOT?
On top of missing George and Powell for long stretches this season, the Clippers have been without Kawhi Leonard the entire time. The two-time NBA Finals MVP is still rehabilitating the torn right ACL he suffered in the second round of last year's playoffs.
Lue has given mostly vague answers to questions about Leonard&rsquo;s status, but the Clippers have not ruled him out for a return at any point during the playoffs.
COFFEY BREWING
Clippers guard Amir Coffey took advantage of increased playing time amid the injuries, and he'll have a chance to show off his development in his home state. The former Gophers star was the Minnesota AP Player of the Year for Hopkins High School in 2016.
&ldquo;Going back home, the most important game of the season, having my people in the crowd, hopefully we can come out with a win,&rdquo; said Coffey, who started 30 games this season and shot 54.2% from the field.
He played at Target Center in the Class 4A state semifinals his sophomore year, a four-overtime game he won by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XXjHoHjN94">swishing a tiebreaking shot from well behind half court to beat the buzzer</a>.
"Probably one of the craziest shots I made,&rdquo; Coffey said.

The Clippers visit the Wolves on Tuesday night in the West Play-In game for the No. 7 seed and a first-round date with Memphis.

Wolves get tough Play-In foe with George back for Clips

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Clippers got way too comfortable against the NBA-leading Phoenix Suns and it nearly cost them.
Leading by 39 points in the third quarter, the Clippers survived an offensive onslaught by Phoenix's bench in the fourth and hung on for a 113-109 victory on Wednesday night.
Norman Powell scored 24 points after being out two months and Paul George added 19 points in three quarters to go over 15,000 in his career for the Clippers.
“You can never relax in the NBA,” Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said. “The players are too good, the coaches are too good, and as soon as you let your guard down things like this can happen.”
With nothing at stake, Phoenix rested All-Star guards Devin Booker and Chris Paul and fellow starters Deandre Ayton and Jae Crowder on the second night of a back-to-back. The Suns had already set a franchise record for wins in a season with 63 by eliminating the Lakers from playoff contention Tuesday.
The Clippers beat up the Suns for three quarters. But Phoenix's reserves put together a 48-point fourth quarter and then ran out of time.
“It’s a great lesson for our team and any kid watching, you just play it out,” Suns coach Monty Williams said. “We just stayed with it and had that Suns grit.”
Cameron Payne came back in and hit a 3-pointer that drew the Suns within four with 10 seconds left. Amir Coffey got fouled and made both free throws to preserve the win. 
Ish Wainwright scored a career-high 20 points to lead Phoenix. Aaron Holiday added 16 points and Bismack Biyombo had 14 points and 12 rebounds. The only starter in double figures was Payne with 13 points. The Suns' bench outscored the Clippers' reserves 66-58.
“When you have games like this, you find out who that guy is that you may be able to throw into a big game,” Williams said. “You build that confidence in games like this.”
George and Powell were playing together for the first time this season, but they quickly got in sync to help the Clippers win their third in a row. They are locked into the eighth spot for the Western Conference play-in tournament next week.
George has played in five of six games since returning from a torn UCL. Powell is back after missing 21 games with a broken foot. He played in just three games with the team before getting hurt shortly after he was acquired in a trade from Portland.
“Playing with PG still didn’t seem real to me,” Powell said. “I looked up to him growing up. Early on in my career he gave me some words of encouragement that stuck with me.”
George scored 10 of his team’s first 14 points to start the game. Powell came in for the first time late in the first quarter and hit a jumper.
They started the second quarter together. Powell hit a 3-pointer and a jumper back-to-back, then George found him for another 3-pointer as part of a 22-0 run. 
“We just tried to play off one another,” George said. “The biggest thing for me was playing off the ball and letting Norm get comfortable. He’s a big-time playmaker and scorer off the ball.”
The Suns’ first points didn’t come until 6:49, when former Clipper Landry Shamet hit a 3-pointer.
The Clippers outscored the Suns 34-9 in the second to lead 60-31 going into halftime.

MILWAUKEE (AP) &mdash; Luka Doncic continues to feel right at home when he&rsquo;s facing the Milwaukee Bucks, even when his Dallas Mavericks are on the road facing a fourth-quarter deficit.
Doncic scored 32 points and matched a season high with 15 assists to help the Mavericks defeat Giannis Antetokounmpo and the defending champion Bucks 118-112 on Sunday.
&ldquo;Obviously, when you play against superstars like Giannis today, you always have extra motivation,&rdquo; Doncic said. &ldquo;He&rsquo;s a champion, a two-time MVP.&rdquo;
Antetokounmpo led the Bucks with 28 points and 10 rebounds. Milwaukee was essentially at full strength Sunday after resting all of its usual starters in a <a href="https://apnews.com/article/milwaukee-bucks-los-angeles-clippers-nba-sports-amir-coffey-04314a6d25c3feecb162c802fbb5120e">153-119 loss </a> to the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night.
Doncic flirted with a triple-double before finishing with eight rebounds. In six career games against the Bucks, Doncic has averaged 26.8 points, 11.3 assists and 9.2 rebounds with three triple-doubles.
&ldquo;He&rsquo;s one of the most talented players in the league, one of the most talented players probably ever to play this game,&rdquo; Antetokounmpo said.
Antetokounmpo added that &ldquo;we tried to make it tough for him, but he played well.&rdquo;
Dallas&rsquo; Dwight Powell added 22 points and 13 rebounds &mdash; one off his career high &mdash; and the Mavericks bounced back two days after a <a href="https://apnews.com/article/dallas-mavericks-washington-wizards-nba-sports-jason-kidd-77c63b8a4a0a560dca39ed8cd8dc0c58">135-103 loss</a> at Washington.
&ldquo;On the road against the champs, it&rsquo;s a hard place to win, especially after we had that performance in Washington,&rdquo; Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said. &ldquo;This group in the locker room knows they can respond."
After a basket by Bobby Portis briefly gave the Bucks a one-point lead early in the fourth, Doncic led the Mavericks back by scoring or assisting on each of Dallas&rsquo; first 11 points in the final period.
Doncic hit a 3-pointer to put the Mavericks back ahead 93-91 with 9:04 left. He made a pair of free throws just over a minute later to make it 95-91. He capped the 8-0 run by finding Dorian Finney-Smith for a corner 3-pointer with 7:20 left.
Antetokounmpo made two free throws to cut the margin to five, but Doncic found Reggie Bullock for a corner 3-pointer that extended Dallas&rsquo; lead to 101-93 with 6:55 remaining.
&ldquo;He&rsquo;s able to pick apart whatever a defense is throwing at him,&rdquo; said Jalen Brunson, who scored 15 points for the Mavericks.
Milwaukee's Jrue Holiday sank a 3-pointer to cut the Mavericks&rsquo; lead to 101-98 midway through the fourth quarter. Powell responded by converting a conventional three-point play to make it 104-98 with 5:52 remaining.
The margin didn&rsquo;t drop below five the rest of the way.
Bullock had 16 points and Finney-Smith and Spencer Dinwiddie had 11 each for the Mavericks. Holiday had 20, Portis 17, Brook Lopez 14, Pat Connaughton 12 and Khris Middleton 11 for the Bucks.

Bucks: Antetokounmpo&rsquo;s season scoring average remained at 30.1 points. He entered the day ranked second in the league to LeBron James (30.3). Philadelphia&rsquo;s Joel Embiid was averaging 30.0 points. Antetokounmpo has never won the scoring title.

The Mavericks were leading 106-101 with 4:47 left when Holiday was called for fouling Doncic on a 3-point attempt. The Bucks challenged the call, but officials determined after looking at the replay that Holiday had made contact with Doncic&rsquo;s head.
Doncic made all three of his ensuing free throws.
&ldquo;Jrue told me after the game, &lsquo;You&rsquo;re welcome for the haircut,'" Doncic quipped. &ldquo;But he got me a little bit, though. I think that&rsquo;s a foul.&rdquo;

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Robert Covington scored a career-high 43 points and shot 11 of 18 from 3-point range to help the hot-shooting Los Angeles Clippers trounce the Milwaukee Bucks 153-119 on Friday night as each team rested its top players.
Amir Coffey also had a career high with 32 points for the Clippers, matching a career high with seven assists to go along with six rebounds.
The Clippers shot 60.9% from the floor and 23 of 43 from 3-point range.
Both teams had played Thursday night games that reached overtime, with the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/milwaukee-bucks-brooklyn-nets-nba-sports-kevin-durant-1a0734f03a711826d4e4f725957d2ffe">Bucks winning 120-119 at Brooklyn</a> and the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/chicago-bulls-los-angeles-clippers-nba-sports-toronto-ca9d033a86ac4f1b8023931805da3b02">Clippers falling 135-130 at Chicago. </a> The only starter from those two games who played at all Friday was Clippers center Ivica Zubac.
Among the players sitting out Friday’s game were Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo, Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday, and the Clippers’ Paul George, Reggie Jackson and Marcus Morris.
This marked the first time the Clippers had reached the 150-point mark since a <a href="https://apnews.com/article/508223d5f769492eb688acc8607d06dd"> 150-125 triumph over the Washington Wizards on Dec. 1, 2019.</a>
Covington hadn’t had more than 21 points or five 3-point baskets in a game all season before Friday. The Clippers acquired the 6-foot-7 forward from Portland on Feb. 4.
Luke Kennard had 23 points, Terance Mann 18 and Isaiah Hartenstein 14 for the Clippers. Jordan Nwora scored 28, Bobby Portis had 25 and Jevon Carter 18 for the Bucks.
With so many notable players missing, neither team played much defense early on as both the Bucks and Clippers were shooting over 60% from the floor midway through the second quarter.
The Bucks couldn't keep up that pace, though they still shot 53.2%. But the Clippers never cooled off at all.
HONORING ANTETOKOUNMPO
The loudest ovation came during a first-quarter timeout when a <a href="https://twitter.com/Bucks/status/1509711013280690185"> video on the Fiserv Forum scoreboard </a> showed Antetokounmpo’s career highlights and noted that he had become the Bucks’ all-time leading scorer. The crowd chanted “MVP! MVP!” for Antetokounmpo, whose 14,216 career points enabled him to overtake Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the franchise record.

To make room on the roster Semi Ojeleye is being waived. Xavier Moon will fill Coffey&rsquo;s place with a new two-way contract.
Coffey is averaging 8.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in 62 games for the Clippers this season.

ANALYSIS:&nbsp;Props to Coffey for impressing the Clippers enough to warrant a full-time deal. Everyone loves to hear stories like that. Sadly, this is bad timing for Ojeleye, as not only is he without a team, but he won't be playoff eligible if a playoff team signs him.

Rookie big man Evan Mobley scored a season-high 30 points and Darius Garland had 24 points and 13 assists, sending the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 120-111 overtime victory against the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday night.
Isaac Okoro added 20 points, including two free throws to open the extra period. Cleveland never trailed after that.
The Cavaliers hold a 1 1/2-game lead over Toronto for the sixth playoff spot in the East.
Ivica Zubac had 24 points, 14 rebounds and four assists, and Amir Coffey scored 19 for the Clippers, who had only nine players in uniform. Los Angeles shot 1 of 10 from the field in OT, with Nicholas Batum making a 3-pointer to pull within 110-109.
Cleveland scored the final seven points on Okoro's dunk, Lauri Markkanen's 3-pointer and two free throws by Markkanen.
The Cavaliers won for the fourth time in 12 games and welcomed back Caris LeVert, who had 11 points in his return from a sprained right foot that sidelined him for a month. All-Star center Jarett Allen missed his fourth straight game with a broken finger on his left hand.
All-Star point guard Garland buried a 3-pointer with 1:20 left in regulation to give Cleveland a 106-103 lead, but Zubac answered with a layup and Coffey made 1 of 2 free throws to force OT. Coffey missed a 23-footer at the buzzer.
Cleveland began a five-game homestand, its longest of the season, over an eight-day span. Ten of its final 15 regular-season games are at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.
The Clippers, who have played an NBA-high 71 games, completed a stretch of five in seven days. Starting point guard Reggie Jackson and starting power forward Marcus Morris were given the night off.
Kawhi Leonard (right knee surgery) has not played this season for Los Angeles, while Paul George (right elbow ligament tear) has been sidelined since Dec. 26 and does not have a projected return date.
Clippers coach Tyronn Lue, who piloted Cleveland to its only NBA championship in 2016, was embraced by Kevin Love during a first-quarter timeout. Love is the only remaining player from that team.
Los Angeles held a 57-56 advantage at the break behind 11 points apiece from Coffey and rookie Brandon Boston Jr. Mobley had 12 for the Cavaliers.

The Clippers are solidly in eighth place in the West, placing them in the play-in tournament. Lue said being &ldquo;cemented&rdquo; in the spot allowed him to rest Jackson and Morris. &ldquo;If we were close to being out of the playoffs, these guys would all play,&rdquo; Lue said. &ldquo;Reggie didn&rsquo;t want to sit, but playing him wasn&rsquo;t the smart thing to do. It was fair to give them the night off, especially after (winning 106-102 in Detroit on Sunday).&rdquo;

We live in a star-horny society.
You could look to a number of things to prove this. Watch an ad for an upcoming NBA game that&rsquo;ll air on ESPN or ABC. They&rsquo;ve been repurposing the same song all year, and apparently have assigned Fat Joe to rhyme the names of the stars from said game.
&ldquo;Kyrie Irving, James Harden coming through in the clutch.&rdquo;
&ldquo;Steph Curry hittin' Klay in the cut.&rdquo;
The formula is always the same: highlight the stars, not the teams. Make it &ldquo;<a href="https://twitter.com/SmittyBeatz_/status/1467871495657504773" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Curry vs. Embiid</a>,&rdquo; then at the very end, change it to Warriors vs. 76ers. Or, in this case, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CZUo0M4pst9/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kyrie vs. Curry</a>, and Harden vs. Klay, before making it Nets vs. Warriors.

Now, look to the Most Improved Player Award. CJ McCollum is the only Most Improved Player of the last 10 years to not become an All-Star, and he probably should&rsquo;ve been selected at least once.
Early on, what you&rsquo;d often see were players winning the MIP award because of increased counting stats, even when the counting stats only improved because their minutes did &mdash; and the players&rsquo; per-36 stats remained eerily similar. Apologies to Don MacLean and the 24-win Washington Bullets of 1994.
Other times, the award would just go to top draft picks who developed as many already expected they would, regardless of how their team performed. Looking at you, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf and Pervis Ellison, respectfully. Though, sometimes, they absolutely nailed it, like with Dale Ellis in 1987, Tracy McGrady in 2001, Jermaine O&rsquo;Neal in 2002 and Hedo T&uuml;rkoğlu in 2007.
In recent years, the award has become more of a star-crowning achievement that cements your arrival, no longer potentially rewarding a 30-year-old journeyman like Darrell Armstrong for finally putting it all together on <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/leagues/NBA_1999.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">one of the league&rsquo;s best regular-season teams</a> of 1999. Or an out-of-nowhere revelation like Isaac Austin, who had left the NBA for Europe before coming back and winning the award in 1997.
This year, we&rsquo;re probably going to follow a similar star-making template. Ja Morant is expected to win the award despite being the No. 2 overall pick in 2019. Expect to see 2019 No. 5 overall pick Darius Garland right behind him.
Why is the award going to high draft picks who just develop as top selections are expected to, like Brandon Ingram two seasons ago? Players should be considered if they've made huge leaps and filled important roles on respectable teams. Right now, it feels like we're only rewarding players who make the jump from above-average starter to star.
So here, I&rsquo;ll highlight guys closer to that Austin, Armstrong, archetype, who really should get Most-Improved-Player consideration (even though they won't) instead of only the rising stars who dominate the category. Guys who proved they belong &mdash; they matter, too.
Caleb Martin, Miami Heat
Caleb Martin and his twin Cody had been teammates with the Charlotte Hornets over the last two seasons, and because they play the same position, one of them had to go. Out went Caleb.
Apparently, <a href="https://www.charlotteobserver.com/sports/charlotte-hornets/article258506473.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">thanks to J. Cole</a>, Caleb got a shot with the Miami Heat, and if you&rsquo;re an agent representing a fringe NBA player, that is where you&rsquo;d probably want your client to go.
Caleb&rsquo;s jumped from 5.0 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 0.7 steals in 15.4 minutes per game in his last Charlotte season to 9.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.0 steals in 23.1 minutes per game in Miami.

Per-36 minutes, the scoring has improved from 11.6 to 14.9 points. The offensive rating has skyrocketed from 99 to 122. The defensive rating is down from 112 to 107. The previously non-existent shooting has gone from 38/25/64 splits to 52/40/76 from the field, three and free-throw line, with a true-shooting percentage at 61.8, up more than 15 percentage points from last season. He&rsquo;s also top-five on the Heat in both win shares (3.9) and win shares per 48 (.158).
In Miami, he&rsquo;s guarded some of the opposition&rsquo;s toughest assignments &mdash; yes, even with multiple Defensive-Player-of-the-Year candidates on his own team in Bam Adebayo and Jimmy Butler &mdash; and went from a two-way contract player to a rotation guy who simply has to get playoff minutes in order for the Eastern Conference&rsquo;s No. 1 team to be at their best from 1-through-9 this spring. He&rsquo;s had a massive impact, and a largely unforeseen one.

Javonte Green, Chicago Bulls
This list was made for someone like Javonte Green.
This dude, at 28, is the only Radford alum to play in the NBA for more than five career games, and they were the only school to offer him out of high school. After going undrafted, he played overseas, including at LEB Plata (Spain&rsquo;s third division after Liga ACB and LEB Oro) and Serie A2 Basket (Italy&rsquo;s second league after Lega Basket Serie A). After four seasons in Europe, he finally got to the NBA in 2019, and until this year, he had averaged just over 10 minutes through 89 games with the Boston Celtics and the Bulls, who acquired him just under a year ago.
This season, Green&rsquo;s up to 24.5 minutes per contest, with 36 starts in 48 games for the playoff-bound Bulls who currently sit at No. 4 in the Eastern Conference. His averages are up from 3.6 points and 1.7 rebounds to 7.6 points and 4.3 rebounds per game, with about a steal and half a block too. His shooting&rsquo;s up from 52/33/75 to 54/35/83, and although his per-36 stats are roughly the same, his offensive rating is way up from 118 to 131 (team-high), and his True Shooting percentage is a career-high .637. His .139 win shares per 48 minutes are second to only DeMar DeRozan in Chicago too.

&ldquo;I know what I&rsquo;m on the team for and what I bring to the team," Green said. "I&rsquo;m going to continue to do that whether that&rsquo;s coming off the bench or starting. I&rsquo;m just here to do my job, be here for my teammates. Whatever they need me to do, I&rsquo;m going to do it regardless if I&rsquo;m starting or coming off the bench. It&rsquo;s not like I&rsquo;m mad about it or anything.&rdquo;
Green&rsquo;s the kind of guy that goes on your squad and instantly becomes a fan favorite, unless you only care about "hoooooperzzzzz."
Gary Payton II, Golden State Warriors
Gary Payton II&rsquo;s been in the league in some capacity since 2016, but has typically been a fringe, perimeter defensive specialist who didn&rsquo;t catch on anywhere aside from the Washington Wizards of 2019-20, with whom he started 17 of his 29 appearances. He was with Golden State last year, but only for 10 games; most of his season was spent in the G League, where he won Defensive Player of the Year.
His averages in those 10 Warrior games last season? 4.0 minutes, 2.5 points, 1.1 rebounds and 0.6 steals. This year? 17.1 minutes, 7.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.4 steals. He&rsquo;s also shooting 61% from the field and 36% from three on nearly two attempts per game &mdash; his jumper&rsquo;s been a factor on him spinning his wheels prior to now.
He&rsquo;s one of the best defenders on the planet, which is something we got a whiff of in Washington, but it&rsquo;s really amplified thanks to his increased role in Golden State. Jarred Vanderbilt, Minnesota Timberwolves 
The only one of these guys to have actually been drafted, Jarred Vanderbilt is the rare developmental success story out of Minnesota. Selected No. 41 overall in 2018, Vanderbilt was originally in the Denver Nuggets&rsquo; system before he was included in a four-team deal two February&rsquo;s ago, landing him here.
From 2018 through 2020, Vanderbilt logged 4.1 minutes per game in just 28 NBA appearances. Last season, he became a rotation piece, though it was still on a typical Timberwolve team &mdash; one that finished 23-49 and 13th&nbsp;in the Western Conference.
He averaged 5.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.0 steals and 0.7 blocks on 17.8 minutes per contest on 61% shooting. This season, he&rsquo;s up to 7.0 points, 8.8 rebounds, 1.4 steals, 0.7 blocks in 25.9 minutes per game on 59% shooting. His win shares are up from 3.1 to 5.4, and has been second on the T-Wolves (after Karl-Anthony Towns) for each of the last two seasons in win shares per 48 among players who&rsquo;ve logged 300 or more total minutes, improving to .164 from .132. This year, he has a 106 defensive rating too. Like GPII, that is primarily why he&rsquo;s here.

LOS ANGELES (AP) &mdash; Terance Mann had 19 points and 10 rebounds, Amir Coffey added 12 of his 14 in the fourth quarter and the Los Angeles Clippers returned from the All-Star break with a 105-102 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night.
Luke Kennard scored 18 points for the Clippers. They earned their sixth consecutive victory over the Lakers in the latest meeting between Los Angeles&rsquo; two underachieving, injury-plagued NBA franchises as they begin the next push to salvage their seasons.
The Clippers also moved one game ahead of the Lakers in the loss column while clinching the season series victory in this local derby. Both advantages could be important at playoff time for two teams that appear headed for the play-in tournament if they make the postseason at all.
Carmelo Anthony missed a long go-ahead jumper with 4 seconds to play and LeBron James missed a tying 3-point attempt at the buzzer for the Lakers, who fell five games under .500 with their fourth loss in five games.
James had 21 points and 11 rebounds while Anthony and Russell Westbrook scored 18 points apiece for the Lakers, who trailed by 16 points late in the first half before nursing a small lead for most of the fourth quarter. Anthony hit four 3-pointers in his first game since Feb. 3 after missing three weeks with a strained hamstring.
After Coffey&rsquo;s free throws put the Clips ahead with 1:05 to play, the Lakers went back ahead on Austin Reaves&rsquo; two free throws, but Marcus Morris drilled a jumper under tight defense. After two lengthy replay reviews, the Clippers committed an 8-second violation with 17.8 seconds left, but Anthony missed a 3-pointer from well behind the line with 4 seconds to play.
Reggie Jackson hit two free throws, and James couldn't tie it with his final heave. Jackson scored 17 points for the Clippers, who won three of four going into the break despite being without likely their three best players: Kawhi Leonard, Paul George and newly acquired Norman Powell.
Talen Horton-Tucker scored all 16 of his points in the second half, while Dwight Howard had season-highs of 14 points and 16 rebounds as the Lakers began yet another stretch without Anthony Davis, who sprained his right foot in their final game before the break nine days ago. Davis will be out for at least another month after missing 21 of the Lakers&rsquo; first 58 games with other woes.
The Lakers were down 49-33 with three minutes left in the first half, but they rallied to take a 72-70 lead on Horton-Tucker's 3-pointer with two minutes left in the third quarter.

Clippers edge Lakers 105-102 for 6th straight rivalry win

DALLAS (AP) — Luka Doncic scored 28 of his career-high 51 points in the first quarter, and the Dallas Mavericks beat the Los Angeles Clippers 112-105 on Thursday night.
The 22-year-old star's 3-point frenzy, part of the highest-scoring quarter in the NBA this season, came a few hours after the Mavericks traded Kristaps Porzingis to Washington. The European pairing of Doncic and Porzingis never developed quite like the club wanted in two-plus seasons.
Despite Doncic hitting seven of his first nine 3s in the highest-scoring quarter of his career, regular season or playoffs, the Clippers were as close as two points in the fourth quarter. But that just set up Doncic for his first 50-point game. 
LA stayed in the game with more balanced scoring, led by Marcus Morris Sr. with 21 points. Norman Powell had 19 and Reggie Jackson 18 in the first of consecutive meetings in Dallas. The rematch is Saturday. 
The Dallas lead was five when Doncic returned for the final time with 8 minutes remaining, and the Mavericks built back their cushion after a flagrant foul call they didn't like against Maxi Kleber gave the Clippers a chance to tie.
Amir Coffey made both free throws to get LA within three, but a steal by Doncic led to Jalen Brunson's alley-oop pass to Dorian Finney-Smith for a layup. After an airball 3 from Nicolas Batum, Doncic assisted on Reggie Bullock's 3-pointer for a 102-94 lead.
Doncic finished 17 of 26 from the field and 7 of 14 from 3, with the only hint of a struggle coming on free throws. He would have had a 30-point first quarter if he hadn't missed three of four from the line, but got hot there too and made 10 of 14 from the stripe. 
Because of all the scoring, Doncic's career-best streak of seven games with at least 10 assists ended. The three-time All-Star had six assists and nine rebounds.
After Doncic's seventh 3 of the first quarter went in, many in the crowd rose and stayed on their feet when Dallas went to the defensive end. Then fans cheered loudly when play stopped and a smiling Doncic walked toward the bench.
Fans chanted “MVP! MVP!” as Doncic waited for the free throw that put him at 50 for the first time. He made the second for a 110-103 lead with 40 seconds remaining.

Clippers: LA had won three straight in Dallas after sweeping its road games in a first-round playoff series last season, the first in NBA history where the road team won the first six games. The Clippers advanced with a Game 7 win at home. ... LA also allowed the previous highest-scoring quarter this season. Golden State star Stephen Curry had 25 in the first quarter of the Warriors’ 115-113 win on Oct. 21. Curry was 5 of 9 on 3-pointers.
Mavericks: Seven of Doncic’s 11 highest-scoring games — all at least 42 points — have come against the Clippers, most of those in first-round playoff series won by LA the past two seasons. ... A three-game streak of all five starters scoring in double figures ended. It was the first time the Mavs had such a run since 2005, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
UP NEXT
Both of the previous two-game sets, one last season in Dallas and the other earlier this season in LA, were splits, so the Mavericks will try to be the first to sweep Saturday.

Indiana Pacers rookie Isaiah Jackson celebrated his best game of the season with an unexpected bath.
He savored every precious second of the ice cold water.
Jackson scored 26 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and posted his first double-double in his first career start, leading the Pacers past the Los Angeles Clippers 122-116 on Monday night.
&ldquo;It surprised me because I didn&rsquo;t know the guys were going to do that and I'm not going to lie, it was very cold," he said. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s the first time it's happened to me and it&rsquo;s something I&rsquo;m going to remember forever."
The first-round draft pick out of Kentucky spent most of Indiana&rsquo;s first 51 games scrapping for minutes and avoiding fouls. But with Indiana&rsquo;s top three centers out of action, the Pacers challenged Jackson and he impressed everyone.
Jackson was 12 of 19 from the field, posted season highs in points and rebounds, blocked two shots and even made a 3-pointer all without being called for a single foul. Duane Washington Jr. added 16 points, including four 3s in the fourth quarter, to help the short-handed Pacers earn their second win in six games.
Rick Carlisle became the second coach in the franchise&rsquo;s NBA history to win 200 career games. Frank Vogel had 250 wins in five seasons with the team and this one looked awfully good to Carlisle.
&ldquo;He did such a great job in every area tonight,&rdquo; Carlisle said, referring to Jackson. &ldquo;When we talked about him in the draft, this is what we were talking about and this is a dimension this team hasn&rsquo;t had.&rdquo;
The worn-out Clippers also were caught off guard. Amir Coffey finished with 27 points and Reggie Jackson had 21 as their five-game winning streak against Indiana came to an end.
&ldquo;To go 4-4 on this tough trip was pretty good for us. It is what it is and now we have to go back and try to regroup," coach Tyronn Lue said. &ldquo;They played well and Isaiah Jackson did a hell of a job."
Neither team was near full strength.
Injured All-Stars Paul George and Kawhi Leonard were out again for the Clippers, and the Pacers played without two-time All-Star Domantas Sabonis, who entered the COVID-19 health and safety protocols earlier Monday.
Not surprisingly, it turned this game into a grind-it-out contest.
Indiana took a 30-27 lead after one quarter and a 60-55 halftime advantage. Even when it appeared the Clippers had taken control with a 14-5 run late in the third period, they couldn't put it away. Instead, the Pacers answered with 10 straight points to retake an 84-82 lead &mdash; only to give it back on Nicolas Batum's 3 to end the third.
Batum opened the fourth with another 3 to make it 88-84 and this time Indiana answered with 12 points in a row, including three consecutive 3s by Washington, to make it 99-89. Los Angeles never led again.

INJURY UPDATE
Carlisle provided a lengthy pregame medical report. Sabonis is expected to miss at least six additional days. Oshae Brissett (right ankle) was a late scratch and Goga Bitadze will return from his sore right foot when he feels comfortable.
Meanwhile, Malcolm Brogdon (right Achilles tendon) and T.J. Warren (left foot) squared off Monday in a 1-on-1 competition, T.J. McConnell had a pin removed from his surgically repaired right wrist and center Myles Turner (left foot) is shooting again. But Carlisle provided no timetable for the return of any players.

Drop coverage can work if your screen navigators are slithery enough, and if your big can patrol the paint.&nbsp;
Switching can work if the blend of lateral quickness, strength and discipline across your personnel is strong enough.
More aggressive styles (<a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/the-bucks-are-reinventing-themselves-on-defense-again" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hi, Milwaukee</a>) can make offenses panic if the ball pressure is there, and also if the backline can rotate in tandem.
Zone can work if the communication and activity are in tune.
What do you have if you can do all of those things? Well, a team like the Miami Heat.

They absolutely popped during their 121-114 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night. I was in awe watching them toggle between multiple coverages depending on the situation. Shot clock. The players involved in the action. The location of the action.&nbsp;
It was poetry in motion.&nbsp;
You don't tap into this type of versatility without a strong foundation. The Heat have that thanks to their All-Star duo of Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo. Add in PJ Tucker, and you have the NBA's best defensive trio.
You can argue for others. Golden State with Gary Payton II, Andrew Wiggins and Draymond Green; Cleveland with Jarrett Allen, Evan Mobley and Isaac Okoro; Toronto with Fred VanVleet, OG Anunoby and Pascal Siakam; Philly with Joel Embiid, Matisse Thybulle and Be- ... ah, well, nevermind.
But Butler, Tucker and Adebayo? That blend of off-ball excellence, on-ball chops, screen navigation and the ability to punch above their weight against larger matchups? They're top-two, and I don't think they're two.
On the season, the Heat are allowing an absurd 88.1 points per 100 halfcourt plays with their versatile trio on the floor &mdash; a mark that ranks in the 90th percentile league-wide per Cleaning The Glass. When attacking the Heat in ball screens with the Butler/Tucker/Adebayo trio on the floor, opposing offenses are generating just 0.86 points per possession, per Second Spectrum.&nbsp;
In short: you're just not scoring at a high clip, if at all, with those three roaming around.&nbsp;
The Heat put on a defensive clinic in the first quarter of that game, posting a 73.1 defensive rating <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/teams/advanced/advanced/?sort=DEF_RATING&amp;dir=-1&amp;Season=2021-22&amp;SeasonType=Regular%20Season&amp;LastNGames=1&amp;Period=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in the opening frame</a>. A lot of that was their trio closing gaps quickly, or not allowing them to be pried open in the first place.&nbsp;
Let's take a look at three plays from that quarter to highlight how special these guys are.
9:15 &mdash; GETTING OUT OF TROUBLE
Great defense isn't a filthy steal or a blocked shot sent into the 15th row, though they're obviously valuable (and super cool to watch). More than anything, great defense is the absence of something happening. You know what's better than a blocked shot? A shot that doesn't come.
Below, the Clippers flow into "Chicago" action &mdash; a pindown that leads into a dribble handoff. Reggie Jackson washes Duncan Robinson out with a great screen, but Adebayo and Tucker are able to switch and keep things in front.
The problem, though, is that Robinson is defending Ivica Zubac. Zubac isn't an elite post presence, but he's generated well over 1.1 points per possession when shooting out of a post mismatch (defended by non-centers) since becoming a full-time starter in 2019, per Second Spectrum.&nbsp;
Tucker recognizes the danger as Zubac attempts to establish position, and executes a "scram switch" with Robinson to flip the matchup. With Tucker in the fray, the possession dies thanks to miscommunication between Jackson and Zubac.&nbsp;

Continuing the theme of great defense being the absence of offensive opportunity, I present this possession. The Clippers try to attack early in pick-and-roll (with an empty corner!) but Tucker and Gabe Vincent simply switch the action.&nbsp;
Then the fun begins.
Zubac lifts to the three-point arc and receives a pass from Terance Mann. With Butler keyed in on Mann, Amir Coffey (<a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/amir-coffey-is-filling-the-gaps" target="_blank" rel="noopener">playing well lately!</a>) runs into a pitch from Zubac &mdash; essentially a variation of <a href="https://youtu.be/ZSvZptvUwKg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Blind Pig action.</a> However, it goes nowhere because of a timely switch from Adebayo. From there, Adebayo shows why he's the best switch big in basketball.&nbsp;

4:20 &mdash; LOCK YOUR DOORS
If you&nbsp;do&nbsp;want to talk about the value of event creation, Butler's off-ball prowess is a great place to start. He's one of the best helpers in the NBA because of his blend of IQ and aggression.
You have to be aware of where Butler is, because he sure as heck is aware of what's going on with you. As the Clippers pitch the ball to Zubac to set up a two or three-man dance on the left side of the floor, Butler senses an opportunity. With Zubac's head turned, Butler blindsides him with a strip and score.

As much as I gamble, my guys are there whenever I do mess it up."
Luckily for the Heat, Butler doesn't mess up that often. Unfortunately for other teams, they aren't really able to capitalize when he does.&nbsp;

Heat stake claim as NBA's most versatile defense

There's a lot going on with the Los Angeles Clippers right now. Zoom out, and you see a team one game under .500 due to its (super)stars being out of the lineup.
Zoom in, and you're likely riding a wave of euphoria or confusion based on what happened on Tuesday night. The Clippers were down as many as 35 points in the first half&nbsp;of their matchup against the Washington Wizards. It was a 30-point deficit by halftime.&nbsp;
Not only did the Clippers come back and win off the back of a four-point play from Luke Kennard, they very well may have broken the Wizards' fan base in the process. If you're religious, say a brief prayer for eardrums and vocal cords all across the interwebs.

Anyway...
What's going a bit under the radar this season is the play of Amir Coffey, an undrafted third-year wing from Minnesota.
(As a brief aside, I had a punny title for this piece playing off of his name before I remembered the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas controversy. You're welcome, unless this note made you look up what that controversy was. In which case, I'm sorry.)
Coffey's per-game numbers may not stand out to you. He's averaging 7.6 points on solid-but-not-spectacular shooting splits. This recent stretch is more in line with "Hmm, what's going on here?" intrigue.
Over his last 10 games, all starts, he's averaging 13.8 points while converting 63.4% of his twos and 41.1% of his threes on nearly six triple tries per contest. Add in 4.0 boards and 3.1 assists, and you have a guy doing a little bit of everything in a secondary role for the Clips.
Coffey's been tasked with more responsibility than he's had in his NBA career recently, and he's thriving. Lost in the mayhem of Tuesday night's game &mdash; and the ranting afterwards &mdash; was Coffey having a career night: 29 points (7 of 12 from two, 3 of 9 from three), 5 boards, 2 steals and a block. He finished with one assist, though that isn't indicative of his passing chops or overall willingness to find guys.
You don't want to project forward based on the best game of someone's career, but last night was a snapshot of what Coffey's been doing under the radar this year &mdash; and especially this month.
We'll get the passing out of the way first. Coffey's a snappy ball mover with some craft. He's able to keep the chains moving when the defense is already bent. When tasked with creating something himself, he can make some better-than-you-think reads.
The lone assist he logged was an absolute dart. Sign me up for non-point guards that can fire skips to the corner with no hesitation.

Justise Winslow (#JustiseBetter) deserves a quick shoutout for flipping the angle of his screen to combat the Wizards trying to ICE this action. Coffey strings out the play a bit, reads the positioning and weight of Rui Hachimura, then slings a laser to Terance Mann while Hachimura is leaning towards the paint. The closeout is futile from that point.
As a scorer, Coffey can flow between on-ball and off-ball production. He had an off shooting night, converting just 2 of his 6 spot-up triples, but he's been reliable (38.3%) on those shots this season. His footwork is generally sound, allowing him to get shots off without much issue.

On the ball, Coffey pairs selective aggression with mid-range feel. His drive volume has been low this season, but he isn't afraid of contact. He's able to mix in power drives and more elusive finishes, depending on the context.
He often decides to cut his adventures short, flowing into pull-ups or floaters over the outstretched arms of big men. It's a nice counter to have against drop coverage; the Clippers are generating north of 1.06 PPP on direct plays against drop with Coffey as the ball-handler, per Second Spectrum.

That selective aggression also plays dividends on the non-glamour end of the floor. Coffey mixes in extreme ball pressure with a more lax style, allowing him to disrupt ball-handlers while also being in position to execute switches &mdash; important for a team that switches at a top-five rate this year. And when he does switch, his physicality allows him to punch above his weight.
Off the ball, Coffey is a mostly-sound rotator who can ramp up the activity if he senses panic. Steals aren't the only part of defense, but his pilferages from Tuesday night offer a nice window of the types of reads he can make.

In all, the Clippers have themselves another intriguing guy on the wing. Last year, it was Mann that kind of came out of nowhere. Coffey seems to have that same potential with a little more in the tank offensively.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Luke Kennard scored seven points inside the final 9 seconds, including a go-ahead four-point play with 1.9 seconds remaining, and the Los Angeles Clippers overcame a 35-point first-half deficit to stun the Washington Wizards 116-115 on Tuesday night.
Kennard hit a 32-footer out of a timeout and then, after Washington committed a 5-second violation, sank another 3 running to his right while absorbing a foul from Bradley Beal. He finished with 25 points.
Amir Coffey scored a career-high 29 points for the depleted Clippers, who evened their record to 2-2 at the midpoint of a season-long eight game trip.
Terance Mann and Isaiah Hartenstein each had 16 points for Los Angeles, which scored 80 points after halftime to improve to 7-10 since losing seven-time All-Star guard Paul George to a right elbow injury last month.
Kyle Kuzma had 19 points and 12 rebounds, and Beal added 10 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter of Washington's fourth consecutive defeat.
The Wizards opened the game on a 15-2 run and led by 35 in the second quarter before giving it all back after halftime to complete an eight-game homestand with a 3-5 record. LA outscored Washington 40-27 in the third quarter and 40-22 in the fourth.
Washington led by nine at the end of the first quarter and held the Clippers to 13 points on 5-of-20 shooting in the second.
Los Angeles gradually cut into the lead in the third, got it to single digits with a 15-1 run that stretched into the fourth, got to within two inside the final three minutes, and then closed the game on an 11-2 run.
The Wizards contributed to the cause with seven fourth-quarter turnovers, including five inside the final six minutes.
On the last, Washington failed to inbound the ball in time with 8.2 seconds to play, setting up Kennard's heroics.

The NBA Sour Rankings took a month-long hiatus due to the wild world of playing through the peak (on league rosters, at least) of a pandemic. With COVID-induced absences dwindling down, it's back to reassess the state of desperation as we approach the season's halfway mark.
Several presumptive playoff contenders are spiraling, and at this stage of the season, it's reasonable to begin panicking. The league's middle tier is as crowded as ever.
With that being said, we're also going to trot out the Tank-O-Meter this season and update it occasionally over the next few months. The Tank-O-Meter measures how much an NBA franchise should be considering throwing in the towel and embracing its younger players while pursuing a high draft pick. It was called the Cade-O-Meter last year, but with no surefire No. 1 pick yet, it takes on a generic nickname.
You'll get Tank-O-Meter readings for each team in the Sour Rankings, rated 1-10 (10 being a full commit to the tank), plus the usual explanations for why each team has earned its undesirably place on this list.
If you're new to the Sour Rankings, here's a refresher: Unlike the typical "power rankings" that repeat themselves throughout sports media, Sour Rankings are a bizarro-world counter. These rankings highlight the top-10 most frustrating NBA franchises throughout the season, and they will be updated every week to match the twists and turns of the league.&nbsp;
This is not merely a bottom-10 of your typical best-to-worst power rankings. You will see championship contenders and playoff hopefuls mixed in with struggling squads. Teams well under .500 may never touch the Sour Rankings because they are on track with their respective processes. Injuries, drama, transactions and generally underwhelming play will earn you a spot on this list.

The central question is ultimately this: How good should you feel about the direction of each franchise? Let's get going:
10. Los Angeles Lakers (21-20) &mdash; Tank-O-Meter rating: 1/10
LeBron James has been an absolute monster for the Lakers over the past month, but the team itself is still 6-7 since we last updated these rankings. Things are looking up, though; L.A. is 5-2 in the past two weeks with the third-ranked offense in the league. Malik Monk has emerged as <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/malik-monks-offensive-versatility-is-helping-fuel-the-lakers-resurgence" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the scoring weapon the franchise hoped for</a> when they added him this offseason. The Lakers could very easily break out of the Sour Rankings by next week.
And no, in no universe should a team with LeBron James active and dominant as ever consider tanking.
9. Houston Rockets (11-30) &mdash; Tank-O-Meter rating: 10/10
Houston is fully invested in a youth movement and has been since the season began, so a Tank-O-Meter rating isn't even necessary. But the sailing hasn't been as smooth as some of the other bottom-feeding NBA franchises.
The recent halftime incidents with Kevin Porter Jr. and Christian Wood both led to one-game suspensions for each. Both are concerning for different reasons; Porter has a history of locker-room altercations, and Wood is a veteran in a leadership role on the team. Nekias Duncan and Steve Jones Jr. had a great discussion about this on <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/podcasts/the-dunker-spot/episodes/basketballnews-com-episode-70-new-year,-same-vibes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">last Tuesday's Dunker Spot podcast</a>. This season is as much about building a culture in Houston as it is getting prospects playing time, and that hasn't been easy.
8. Los Angeles Clippers (20-21) &mdash; Tank-O-Meter rating: 4/10
Injuries continue to attack the Clippers. Paul George is out at least several weeks with an elbow injury and Isaiah Hartenstein has no timetable on his hurt ankle. L.A. is thus 3-6 since Christmas and 4-9 since the last Sour Rankings, dropping to ninth in the West.&nbsp;
There's a sneaky case to be made for a tank here. Young players like Terance Mann, Amir Coffey and Brandon Boston Jr. continue to flash promise. With George and Kawhi Leonard out <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/kawhi-leonard-knee-ahead-of-schedule-strong-chance-he-returns-this-season" target="_blank" rel="noopener">for now</a>, the Clippers' ceiling is capped. It's probably still too early for a veteran-heavy roster to be shuffled around, but the situation is worth revisiting around the trade deadline.
7. Indiana Pacers (15-25) &mdash; Tank-O-Meter rating: 7/10

Domantas Sabonis dropped a career-high 42 points on the Utah Jazz in the Pacers' Saturday win, and he's been on fire as of late. Indiana, however, had lost six straight games prior to that victory, and continues to flounder with a mediocre offense and below-average defense.&nbsp;
It's been over a month since the initial reports about Indiana embracing a rebuild, but hopefully the front office is still on that track. The Pacers lack upside outside of whatever Sabonis can muster up, even when Caris LeVert and Malcolm Brogdon have their good days. Indiana is 13th in the Eastern Conference with several better teams ahead in the Play-In battle. There's no sense in pushing for a whimper of a postseason exit.
6. Washington Wizards (20-20) &mdash; Tank-O-Meter rating: 2/10
Despite sitting at .500, Washington is one of six franchises with bottom-10 offensive and defensive ratings, per Cleaning the Glass. Those other teams are all at least 10 games below .500. The Wizards have gone 5-9 in the past month and are fading fast.&nbsp;
However, unless some roster overhaul occurs at the trade deadline, Washington isn't in a position to tank. The biggest franchise domino is still Bradley Beal's upcoming free agency, and if the organization has any hope of keeping him, it should continue to focus on the playoffs. The Wizards currently sit ninth, but are still only two games out of sixth in the East. There's time to right the ship.
5. Sacramento Kings (16-26) &mdash; Tank-O-Meter rating: 4/10
The Kings are on a four-game losing streak, are 3-7 in their last 10, and <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/report-kings-open-to-trading-deaaron-fox-tyrese-haliburton-" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to the Philly Voice's Kyle Neubeck</a>, have been open to making De'Aaron Fox and Tyrese Haliburton available in trade talks. Altogether, that signals desperation. Sacramento should shake things up because the defense is still horrendous (ranked 27th) and the offense is disappointing (24th).&nbsp;
Does the state of the Kings really call for another tank though? For a young franchise used to losing, postseason experience &mdash; even Play-In exits &mdash; might have extra value. But there still is not enough overall talent or cohesion to pull off the appearance of a playoff contender. The rating stays low, for now.
4. Boston Celtics (19-21) &mdash; Tank-O-Meter rating: 2/10
Friday's loss to the New York Knicks on an RJ Barrett buzzer-beater underlined a disastrous stretch for the Celtics that included second-half collapses, stalling offense and disappointing results against inferior opponents. Once again, the Jayson Tatum-Jaylen Brown pairing has been called into question by fans, along with Ime Udoka's coaching and the point guard situation. And while I think much of the blame game is misguided, the fact that it exists is a concern in itself.
Boston holds the last Play-In spot, and a postseason appearance should wholeheartedly remain the sole goal. A tank in any form would symbolize a lack of confidence in the current direction, a.k.a. a team led by Tatum and Brown. There is no legitimate reason to be hesitant in rostering what is still one of the best wing duos in basketball, and fortunately, <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/celtics-have-no-interest-in-trading-jayson-tatum-or-jaylen-brown" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Boston seems to know this</a>.

3. New York Knicks (19-21) &mdash; Tank-O-Meter rating: 3/10
The Knicks may have gotten that buzzer-beater win, but it was quickly erased by a resounding 99-75 loss to the same Celtics on Saturday. This team is dreadfully inconsistent, starting at the top with Julius Randle and Barrett, and Immanuel Quickley's growth hasn't dispelled the frustration. As of right now, New York loses the tiebreaker with Boston and is actually out of the postseason entirely.
Like the Celtics, though, a Knicks tank is an admittance that the current franchise direction is an error and that one glorious 2020-21 season was a fluke. New York should not miss out on the Play-In Tournament. They do have an interesting group of young talent, and a high-lottery prospect would surely help. But the lack of star power at the top compared to the previous draft class makes a risky move like that less enticing.
2. Portland Trail Blazers (15-24) &mdash; Tank-O-Meter rating: 4/10
The Trail Blazers have a terrible defense that continually costs them games, and have fallen to 12th in the West amidst a chaotic fight (is it a fight?) for postseason spots. Every loss makes fans worry more about the future of Damian Lillard, and Lillard himself remains out with an abdominal injury.&nbsp;
This franchise is in such a weird place. They aren't a destination, and they aren't near true playoff contention. Portland is two games out of top-four lottery odds... which could be the best way of acquiring someone with star upside to join Lillard. But is that the tone Lillard wants to set, and does his <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/damian-lillard-wants-2year-extension-which-could-shape-blazers-gm-search" target="_blank" rel="noopener">will carry the same weight anymore</a>? It's all incredibly confusing for the Tank-O-Meter.
1. Atlanta Hawks (17-22) &mdash; Tank-O-Meter rating: 2/10
What a mess things have been in Atlanta. The Hawks are 2-5 in the last two weeks with the worst defense in the NBA. They lost a game in which Trae Young scored 56 points. Atlanta is currently 12th in the East standings. General manager <a href="https://www.si.com/nba/hawks/news/atlanta-hawks-general-manager-hints-at-trades" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Travis Schlenk even went on record</a> wondering if he should lower expectations for the team. John Collins is <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/report-john-collins-frustrated-by-role-with-hawks" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly frustrated by his role</a>. Yikes.
The Hawks should be done with their prospect stockpiling. They absolutely need to make a major move at the trade deadline, but going back to the draft for help won't solve the team's problems. Atlanta has loads of young talent from Young, to Kevin Huerter, to Collins, to Onyeka Okongwu, to De'Andre Hunter, to Cam Reddish and more. It's time to turn that back into winning either via trade or growth.

As the NBA season reaches the halfway point, some teams need to make a decision on their direction.

NBA Sour Rankings: Welcoming back the Tank-O-Meter

LOS ANGELES (AP) &mdash; Amir Coffey tied a career-high with 21 points and Serge Ibaka added 16 to lead the Los Angeles Clippers to a 106-93 win over the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday.
Coffey, who went undrafted out of Minnesota in the 2019 NBA draft, is on a two-way contract with the Clippers and the G-League but has really blossomed this season. He made a big impact Sunday since the Clippers, like many NBA teams, are short-handed due to health and safety protocols and injuries.
He made 8 of 12 field goals and 5 of 8 3-pointers. It&rsquo;s been an up-and-down stretch for the Clippers, and while he&rsquo;s made steady improvements, Coffey has had to navigate going from the G-League to the NBA and back-and-forth.
&ldquo;I just always tell myself it&rsquo;s a marathon,&rdquo; Coffey said. &ldquo;There&rsquo;s ups and downs. Good games and bad games, going back and forth. It&rsquo;s about staying level-leaded in good times and bad times. Don&rsquo;t get too high or too low. I&rsquo;m doing what i love. At the end of the day, I&rsquo;m happy for myself and excited for myself.&rdquo;
Bogdan Bogdanovic and Trae Young led the Hawks with 19 points each. Bogdanovich scored 15 of those 19 points in the first half for the Hawks. The matchup featured two struggling teams, both through injuries, protocols and losses. Atlanta finished 2-4 on the roadtrip.
&ldquo;There&rsquo;s many issues obviously,&rdquo; Bogdanovich said. &ldquo;I don&rsquo;t know what is the main one because we have a lot of them. We have to look at ourselves in the mirror and accept we&rsquo;re playing bad right now. We can&rsquo;t say we&rsquo;re a good team right now because we&rsquo;re not.&rdquo;
The Clippers, who played back-to-back games after a home loss to Memphis, snapped a three-game losing streak. They had also lost nine of their last 12 before Sunday&rsquo;s victory.
The Clippers are still trying to figure out their way without Paul George, who is out with an ulnar collateral ligament tear in his right elbow for at least another few weeks.
Ivica Zubac had 13 rebounds and three assists for the Clippers.
Coffey scored 10 of his points in the first quarter for the Clippers. The Clippers ended the first quarter with a 15-4 run and took a 31-23 lead and were in control the rest of the way.
The Clippers outrebounded the Hawks, 47-39.
&ldquo;It feels good,&rdquo; said Clippers coach Tryonn Lue. &ldquo;We brought a physicality to the game. We rebounded inside. We played hard. We played tough. They&rsquo;re a tough team to beat.&rdquo;
The Hawks finished a season-long roadtrip of six games over 13 days.
CELEBRATING SWEET LOU
The Clippers ran a tribute video of former player Lou Williams, in the first quarter. Williams, who won two sixth man of the year awards with Los Angeles, was on the Atlanta bench as a healthy scratch. He was a fan favorite in Los Angeles.
&ldquo;It was out of respect,&rdquo; said Chris Jent, Atlanta&rsquo;s acting head coach. &ldquo;Lou wasn&rsquo;t in the rotation today. Rather than have him in uniform and not play, we had him inactive.&rdquo;

Nikola Jokic kept the Denver Nuggets from blowing another game with a history-making performance.
He had 26 points and 22 rebounds, rallying Denver past the Los Angeles Clippers 103-100 on Sunday night after the Nuggets wasted a 17-point lead.
Jokic also had eight assists, becoming the first player to record 25-plus points, 20-plus rebounds and five-plus assists in consecutive games since Charles Barkley in 1988.
The Nuggets led by 19 points against Charlotte in their previous game at home and lost just before Christmas. It made for a tough holiday at coach Michael Malone's house.
&ldquo;I wasn&rsquo;t very much fun to be around. I was kind of a scrooge,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I apologized to my wife, my daughters and my dogs.&rdquo;
Jokic had 29 points, 21 rebounds and five assists in the Charlotte defeat. For a while Sunday, it looked as if the Nuggets would give away another one, this time on the road.
Luke Kennard almost made it happen. He came off the bench from foul trouble and hit a 3-pointer from the right corner with 19 seconds remaining that got the Clippers to 101-100.
&ldquo;It was a little bit of an adventure there at the end,&rdquo; Malone said.
Jokic was trying to catch an inbounds pass when he got fouled by Eric Bledsoe, sending them both crashing into the Clippers bench. Jokic made both free throws to extend the Nuggets' lead to three.
Brandon Boston Jr. took the Clippers&rsquo; final shot under heavy pressure from Davon Reed, but his potential tying 3-pointer was off the mark at the buzzer. Reed just signed a second 10-day contract with Denver.
Boston and Bledsoe led the Clippers with 18 points apiece. Bledsoe had 10 assists. Ivica Zubac had 17 points and 11 rebounds.
The Clippers were playing without Paul George, who is sidelined for up to a month with an ulnar collateral ligament tear in his right elbow. They lost for the fourth time in five games.
&ldquo;We're missing our best closer,&rdquo; Terance Mann said. &ldquo;We got to a close game and nearly stole it.&rdquo;
After scoring just five points in the third, Jokic scored nine in the fourth in addition to pulling down seven rebounds.
Will Barton added 17 points for Denver, which snapped a two-game skid.
&ldquo;We needed this one,&rdquo; Malone said. &ldquo;We responded the way we needed to, getting stops, sharing the ball.&rdquo;
Jokic helped the Nuggets tie the game at 93-all in the fourth. He fed Barton for the tying jumper after scoring on a hook shot and hitting a pair of free throws. Jokic's 3-pointer gave Denver its first lead of the fourth, 96-94.
The Clippers erased a 17-point deficit in the third. They got outscored 10-2 to open the quarter, then closed on a 26-5 run to lead 83-79 going into the fourth.
Four reserves helped key the spurt, with Boston and Serge Ibaka hitting 3-pointers and Amir Coffey scoring on a drive. Bledsoe added seven points.
&ldquo;Our guys did a good job and we were in position to win the game,&rdquo; Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said. &ldquo;I was happy and pleased with the way our young guys played.&rdquo;
Monte Morris scored all five Denver points. The Clippers' defense denied Jokic around the rim, leading to transition baskets for them on the offensive end.
&ldquo;We built a 17-point lead and then all of a sudden everything changed," Malone said. &ldquo;The Clippers became very aggressive, they got out and ran and had us on our heels. To weather that storm and stay together was great to see.&rdquo;
A total of four players were out because of health and safety protocols, including Clippers starter Reggie Jackson. Fellow starter Marcus Morris exited protocols before the game, but remains out while he goes through reconditioning. Denver's Michael Porter Jr. and Bol Bol were in protocols.

&ldquo;It&rsquo;s almost become normal and it&rsquo;s scary because you don&rsquo;t really want this to be what normal is.&rdquo; &mdash; Malone on the COVID-19 absences plaguing the league.
