Mark Walter's stint as the controlling owner of the Los Angeles Lakers is over almost as quickly as it began. Walter, the CEO of TWG Global, purchased his majority stake in the franchise last year at a valuation of roughly $10 billion. According to ESPN's Ramona Shelburne, he has now agreed to sell that stake to Thrive Capital founder Josh Kushner and former Disney CEO Bob Iger for a record-setting $12.5 billion for U.S. pro sports, a $2.5 billion profit in less than a year.

Walter didn't stay silent on his way out. He released a statement addressing the sale directly, framing his short-lived ownership as both a privilege and an investment rather than a retreat.

"Owning the Los Angeles Lakers has been one of the great honors of my life," Mark Walter stated, as per ESPN. "An extraordinary investment, but what I will carry with me is the community, the fans, and a city that treats this team as family. I am grateful to Jeanie Buss, the Buss family, the players, and the staff for welcoming me into this chapter. The Lakers belong to Los Angeles, and I have every confidence the best is still ahead."

Walter is selling only the Lakers in this transaction. But why now? Why so soon?

Why Is Walter Selling So Soon?

As per Bloomberg, Mark Walter is currently facing a federal investigation tied to alleged tax fraud involving insurance companies he controls, with the Securities and Exchange Commission reportedly running a parallel inquiry into whether those companies properly disclosed their financial ties to his other ventures.

There's no public evidence connecting that investigation to the sale, and it's worth being careful not to overstate a link that hasn't been confirmed.

But the timing is hard to ignore.

Selling the LA Lakers now, at a $2.5 billion markup, gives Walter a version of the outcome nearly every owner under legal scrutiny would want: a clean, profitable exit from the NBA spotlight before that scrutiny intensifies further.

It signals that Walter wants his involvement with the Lakers remembered as a business decision made from a position of strength, not one forced by outside pressure.

Whether the public reads it that way is a separate question, especially given he's not stepping away from sports ownership entirely. Walter remains the controlling owner of the Dodgers and holds stakes in the Sparks and Chelsea FC.

Josh Kushner and Bob Iger are "Deeply Honored"

Kushner has been rapidly expanding his sports portfolio, with Thrive Capital also investing in the San Francisco Giants earlier this year, while Iger spent parts of two decades running one of the most recognizable media companies in the world before stepping down from Disney earlier this year.

Earlier, Kushner and Iger had spent months assembling a bid for the NBA's planned Las Vegas expansion franchise before pivoting toward an outright purchase of one of the league's highest-valued teams instead.

“As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honored for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world," Josh Kushner and Bob Iger stated, per ESPN.

"We have immense respect for the leadership and vision of Jerry and Jeanie Buss. Our long-term commitment is to build on that foundation, compete at the highest level, and serve this extraordinary team, its fans, and the city of Los Angeles."

Framing themselves as caretakers rather than new bosses, the duo has made an attempt to reassure a fan base that's had very little continuity at the ownership level lately, even as Jeanie Buss reportedly remains involved as an investor.

The move, though, still requires sign-off from the NBA's Board of Governors. This formality took roughly a month to clear when Walter bought the Lakers.

The Lakers’ valuation underscores how NBA franchises have become global assets in the modern era. If the 17-time NBA Champions can continue to charm the fans on and off the field, the value would certainly keep on going up in the near future as well.
