“Worst Trade in History of Sports”: Donald Trump Slams Luka Doncic Trade With Unusual Solution

It's been over a year since Luka Doncic was traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers. Once upon a time, Doncic was seen as the successor to Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki in Dallas. For one season, Nowitzki mentored Doncic before hanging up his laces in 2019. Fast forward six years, and the unthinkable happened.

US President Donald Trump recently gave a speech at the Mavericks' American Airlines Center. Being in the Mavs' arena, Trump couldn't help but bring up the infamous trade that took place in February 2025.

"This is a big Dallas Mavericks team, which is going to be hopefully good. I must tell you, I don’t understand the trade," Trump said in his speech. "That (Luka Doncic) trade is not — what do I know about basketball? I would say it’s not going to go down as the greatest trade in the history of sports. It might go down as the worst trade in the history of sports."

Trump then made an unusual suggestion for solving the Doncic trade fiasco.

"Maybe we could redo that trade. I redo deals all the time. We gotta redo that deal. I don’t get that deal," Trump added.

If it were that easy to redo a trade, it's more than likely that many trades over the years would've been redone.

Honestly, nobody saw it coming. Former Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison believed Anthony Davis was the missing piece - the kind of player who, alongside Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson, could push Dallas over the top and compete for a title.

But Doncic's departure arguably broke the team before it ever had a chance to take off. Davis couldn't stay healthy, missing significant time due to a string of injuries.

Irving tore his left ACL and was ruled out for the entire 2025-26 season. And Thompson? He's simply not the same shooter he was during his Golden State days- that lethal stroke has faded considerably.

Now, Harrison's would-be championship roster has completely fallen apart. Davis is in Washington with the Wizards. Thompson is headed to Miami.

And while Irving is still in Dallas, there are already whispers that he could be moved at the trade deadline if things don't click between him and Cooper Flagg.

Luka Doncic's Teammate Stoked to Play for Lakers After Slovenia Trip

Now that Luka Doncic is the face of the Los Angeles Lakers, he's already doing the best that he can to be a good leader for his team. Earlier this summer, Luka took the entire team to his homeland in Slovenia to bond. Part of their itinerary, apparently, was to get some reps on the hardwood as well.

Newly acquired Lakers big man Kevon Looney recently voiced his thoughts on what he thinks of the Luka-led team after going to Slovenia.

"I've been in the league for a while, and that was my first time doing something like that, going to somebody's country and bringing us all out there and spending that much time together," Looney said in an interview with ESPN. Video reposted by Courtside Buzz on X.

"I never did that before," Looney added. "So, that just shows his character, showing that he really wants to win. He wants people to know his background, why he is how he is; he did a good job of that. He's a great player and a great leader, and we got to see his personality off the court. So it was great, and we're going to follow him, run through a wall for him."

The positive feedback from Looney should be reassuring for Lakers fans. For eight years, we've grown accustomed to LeBron James leading the charge in LA.

However, it'll be the first time we'll see what Doncic can do as the team's commander. But given how optimistic his new teammates sound, Lakers fans could be in for a real treat this coming season.
