LeBron James and Tyrese Maxey have known each other for years, but their relationship has taken on a new dimension since James joined the Philadelphia 76ers. A viral clip from the team's Blue x White scrimmage showed Maxey handing his four-month-old daughter, Marvel, to James, who bounced her on his knee as cameras captured the moment. The exchange quickly caught fans' attention, with the NBA calling him “Uncle Bron” and others jokingly dubbing him “LeBabysitter.”
But it was the conversation between the two players that got people curious about what James actually said.
The moment took place on October 3 at Xfinity Mobile Arena. With Marvel at the scrimmage, Maxey passed her to James while he dealt with a burp towel and pacifier. James held the infant and gently bounced her on his knee, although fans couldn't resist poking fun at how unfamiliar he looked holding a baby despite being a father of three.
The conversation that followed was much less mysterious than the viral attention suggested. Maxey told James that Marvel could call him “Papa Bron” if she wanted to. James responded by pointing out that he would be in his 50s by the time she turned 10.
James seemed happy to play along with the attention. He shared the clip on his Instagram Story with the caption, “Uncle Bron on babysitting duty!”
It was a lighter moment during a day when he wore No. 9, rather than his familiar No. 6, which Philadelphia retired in honor of Julius “Dr. J” Erving.
The video also gave fans a glimpse of the relationship behind the jokes. Maxey has been trying to recruit James to Philadelphia for years, even when he knew the chances of it happening were slim.
In 2024, before James re-signed with the Los Angeles Lakers, Maxey texted him that he was “always welcome to come to Philly.” Maxey later admitted he knew James was headed back to Los Angeles and was simply messing with him. Two years later, the joke has become reality, with the pair now sharing a 76ers locker room.
LeBron James and Tyrese Maxey's relationship goes beyond basketball
The bond between James and Maxey did not begin with Philadelphia's latest roster changes. The two have trained together every summer since Maxey began preparing for the 2020 NBA Draft, and they first became acquainted when Maxey, then 19, spent time with James' sons.
They also share an agent, Rich Paul, and Maxey has described James as a “big brother.” James, for his part, has said their relationship “goes beyond the court” and acknowledged that Maxey was one of the main factors in his decision to join the 76ers.
That familiarity has been visible in the team's early interactions, too. Rookie VJ Edgecombe recently explained that he could not simply add James to a group chat, so he asked Maxey to do it for him. It was a small detail, but one that showed how Maxey has helped connect the new teammates.
The baby-holding moment also arrived during a week when reports of locker-room tension had put the 76ers under scrutiny. The viral exchange did not answer questions about the team's basketball plans, but it offered a more relaxed glimpse of the relationships developing away from the court.
