The NBA community has collectively held its breath as LeBron James continues to take his time before deciding which team he’ll sign with in 2026. It will most likely be his last season in the league, which makes this decision carry immense weight. Amidst all of that, James and his camp appear to be taking a highly secretive approach while also seeming completely relaxed.
The four-time NBA MVP does not appear to be in any rush to make his decision. So much so that teams interested in him seem to be operating with little to no communication and no real knowledge of what he’s thinking.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst shared an update on the race for James on The Hoop Collective, saying that most people are completely clueless about what’s going on.
"Last I heard about it, teams are kinda in the dark and all kind of waiting," Windhorst added.
He likened it to the previous times that James was a free agent. According to Windhorst, the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Los Angeles Lakers all had no idea that James was going to choose them.
For example, he shared a story from 2014, when James entered free agency. That year, the Cavs were reportedly preparing to offer Gordon Hayward a max contract. In fact, the Butler alum was already in the building and was minutes away from signing.
That only changed when one of James' agents called up the Cavs to ask them why they were filling up their cap space.
What’s different this time around, though, is that teams don’t have to worry about tying up their cap space. They can go ahead and sign players as long as they leave enough room for LeBron James.
James does not appear to be motivated by signing with the team that can pay him the most. Some reports even claim that he’s willing to sign for as little as the veteran minimum or as much as the non-taxpayer mid-level exception.
That said, a few teams have emerged as favorites, according to reports. The Cavaliers, the franchise that drafted James in 2003 and where he delivered the iconic 2016 championship, are among them. A return to the Heat is also on the cards, especially with Giannis Antetokounmpo now in South Beach. That’s another familiar destination for the King, having won back-to-back NBA titles with Miami in 2012 and 2013. But another team has also emerged as a reported frontrunner: the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Minnesota Timberwolves Are Going All-in On LeBron James, Per Sources
The Minnesota Timberwolves have already made moves to reshape their roster heading into the 2026-27 season. They formed a brand new backcourt by pairing LaMelo Ball with Anthony Edwards, and are looking to also add LeBron James to the mix.
Per The Athletic's Jon Krawczynski, the Wolves front office firmly believes they offer the best situation for the 41-year-old star.
With their core of Edwards, Ball, Jaden McDaniels, and Rudy Gobert, they think James can go for ring number five in Minneapolis. They also believe that narrative-wise, they can help James get ahead in the GOAT conversation.
Currently, the Timberwolves are among the NBA franchises that have yet to win a championship. Should James arrive and change that, he’d add another accolade to his résumé and further strengthen his case as the greatest player of all time.
Thankfully for the Wolves, James’ agent, Rich Paul, considers them one of the most realistic destinations for his client.
Despite the lack of communication and stiff competition, the Timberwolves offer a compelling situation. Their willingness to go all-in on pursuing James shows just how serious they are about landing him, and that commitment could go a long way in helping him decide where he’ll play next.
