Steve Kerr’s NSFW Outburst After Warriors Star’s Turnover Caught Live on Camera

Turnovers triggering a visible, caught-on-camera outburst from Steve Kerr isn't exactly new territory. Back in March, Kerr was filmed screaming "The ball matters!" at rookie Will Richard after a sloppy sequence against the Knicks.

Seven months later, with a new season approaching, Kerr found himself in an almost identical moment. During Golden State's preseason win over the Lakers at Chase Center, cameras caught Kerr erupting on the sideline after a turnover by second-year guard LJ Cryer.

"What the f--- is he doing!" Kerr shouted, visibly frustrated as the possession unraveled in real time.

The play itself was an unforced error. Early in the fourth quarter, with the Warriors running a two-on-one transition opportunity, Cryer opted to fire a high-velocity pass across to Malevy Leons rather than simply attacking the rim himself, and the ball sailed away from his teammate.

For a coach who has spent the entire offseason preaching ball security, watching a clean numbers advantage get thrown away was clearly the breaking point.

Golden State ultimately cruised to a 124-98 win. Yaxel Lendeborg scored 17 points, and Podziemski added 16 points of his own. But the Warriors also finished with 24 total turnovers on the night, extending a problem that has followed the roster since well before this preseason began.

Cutting down on turnovers has been one of Golden State's points of emphasis entering this season. The Warriors finished last year tied with the Wizards for the third-most turnovers per game in the league at 15.7, a number Steve Kerr flagged as something the coaching staff redesigned their offensive concepts around heading into camp.

With Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green all aging further into their 30s, Golden State's margin for error has reduced considerably. It has made making careless mistakes from younger rotation pieces far more costly than they might have been in years past.

That context helps explain why a single preseason turnover drew such a sharp reaction. Cryer, Richard, and Lendeborg are all part of the Warriors' young core expected to get minutes behind the veteran stars this season.

Kerr has made it clear that he wants aggressive, decisive play from that group rather than hesitant or overly ambitious decision-making - like attempting a difficult cross-court pass instead of simply finishing an open transition look.

As with the Richard incident in March, Kerr's outburst says as much about the stakes he's placing on these possessions as it does about any one player's mistake.

He's previously owned up to letting his emotions get ahead of fair blame in the heat of the moment. Still, with ball security already identified as one of the factors standing between Golden State and a return to postseason contention, Kerr's sideline reactions this preseason are shaping up to be a running theme - one that will only ease once his roster, young and old alike, starts taking care of the ball the way he wants.
