A photo of LeBron James, Jaylen Brown, and Tyrese Maxey training together in Los Angeles reignited debate over whether the 76ers’ new core can coexist. Shaquille O’Neal quickly weighed in with a blunt warning.
On SportsCenter, O’Neal said, “Championship or bust. You got the great LeBron. You got great Embiid. It was like three, four years ago Charles and I would always say how he’s the best big man. Joker has surpassed him, will be honest, making a name for himself. My question to Joel: does he want it back? And if he does, please show me.”
O’Neal left no room for patience. “I don’t wanna hear next year… this team was put together to win a championship now… they have all the pieces they need.”
James signed a two‑year deal in Philadelphia after calling the move his last decision. The 76ers then added him alongside Embiid, Brown, Maxey, and VJ Edgecombe. In Shaq’s view, that roster ends the conversation about rebuilding.
At 41 and in his 24th season, James did not join Philadelphia to develop a young core; he came to chase a fifth title. If the season ends without a ring, the disappointment will start with James and run through every star who signed up beside him.
The Roster Built for Now, Not Tomorrow
The challenge for Embiid is staying healthy. For James, it is about legacy. O’Neal said he already knows James wants one more championship, which is why the 76ers were assembled this way. A 50‑win season or a conference‑finals run will not be enough.
Brown arrived motivated after Boston traded him. Meantime, Maxey continues to improve. Embiid has to prove he still wants the top spot among big men, and James is the one who cannot claim he didn’t know what was necessary.
Philadelphia has not won a title since 1983. James has won four, each with a different supporting cast and city. This is the first time he will try to do it on a team that asks one star to stay healthy and two others to share the ball.
