Luka Doncic's first night as LeBron James' teammate came with an unforgettable assist. In his Lakers debut back in February 2025, days after the trade that stunned the league, Doncic found James for a highlight pass and called his basketball IQ "insane" afterward. That first impression carried through nearly two full seasons together.
Now that James is gone to Philadelphia, Doncic revealed what their relationship looked like behind the scenes. And it included the texts the two exchanged the moment James decided to leave. In a new Sports Illustrated feature with Chris Mannix, Doncic described reaching out to James directly once the move became real.
"And I reached out to him," Doncic said. "Thank you for everything. Obviously it was amazing being his teammate. Learned so many things."
Doncic was also asked about carrying the weight of being the Lakers' franchise cornerstone while James was still on the roster. A dynamic that produced plenty of outside speculation about hierarchy and ego inside the locker room.
Doncic dismissed the idea that it ever felt like pressure. He described James instead as someone who gave him room to operate on his own terms.
"He just let me be me, and I really respect that," Doncic said. "And the way he approached the game with us, it was unbelievable. It was very respectable. I had so much fun playing with him."
Doncic arrived via a trade that no one saw coming. He inherited the keys to a franchise built around James for over a decade. Rather than a tense transition of power, Doncic has described the handoff as more of a mentorship, with James stepping back to let a 27-year-old superstar run the offense his way instead of asserting the control that a 20-year veteran and four-time champion could easily have.
Doncic was effectively describing a soon-to-be Hall of Famer choosing collaboration over dominance in the final stage of a Lakers career that included four championships over two different stints with the franchise.
James' decision to sign with Philadelphia this offseason ended the partnership before it could chase a title together. But Doncic's account suggests that the relationship itself ended on good terms rather than friction.
Doncic now enters the season as the unquestioned face of the Lakers. A reality he's addressed by saying leading the team "feels great" then and framed it as a challenge he's handled before in his career.
The private exchange with James offers a quieter counterpoint to that bigger transition. A reminder that, however the on-court chapter ended, the relationship between the two stars appears to have stayed exactly as respectful as it looked from the outside.
