After the departure of LeBron James from the Los Angeles Lakers, Luka Doncic has emerged as the team's new leader. What began as a getaway to build chemistry quickly became a masterclass when, as per NBA insider Marc Stein, Doncic introduced the group to a familiar figure from his Dallas days, Dirk Nowitzki’s legendary shot doctor, Holger Geschwindner.

"Holger works closely with Luka on his Total Hoops Approach youth basketball initiatives, as does The Search Institute via funding from Doncic," Stein wrote on X about why Geschwindner was present in their practice session.

Geschwindner is one of the most renowned basketball figures in Europe. Aside from being Nowitzki's mentor, he was also named the captain of the West German basketball team in the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics.

Given how Geschwindner has helped Nowitzki elevate his NBA career to Hall of Fame status, the Lakers receiving private sessions from him could prove to be a much-needed boost in the coming 2026-27 season.

For young Lakers like Bronny James and Dalton Knecht, learning directly from Geschwindner could address gaps in shooting consistency and offensive confidence. Both have spent recent seasons overshadowed by stars like Doncic, LeBron James, and Austin Reaves. A few lessons from Nowitzki’s mentor might help them elevate their roles.

Despite Doncic’s visible commitment, ESPN’s Tim MacMahon cautioned that rival teams are monitoring his situation closely.

"You better believe there's teams around the league that are looking at that situation and saying, 'Hey, if this thing goes sideways, we'd sure like to get Luka in the midway through his prime,'" MacMahon said.

Doncic recently signed a three‑year, $160.3 million contract. He has shown no signs of wanting out, but the Lakers’ ownership turbulence and roster transition leave open questions. The next extension window in 2027 will be the true test of whether this Slovenia trip marks the start of a long Lakers era or just a chapter before another move.
