The Clippers' team store has listed Beal's jersey number for the upcoming season as No. 3. The same number last worn by Paul before his retirement this past summer.

According to Paul, via an appearance on Carmelo Anthony's "7 PM in Brooklyn" podcast, the organization had told him the number would be retired once he stepped away from the game. It made the store listing feel like a direct contradiction of that promise.

The frustration is compounded by how Paul's final season with the franchise ended. He was reportedly informed that the team was moving on from him in the middle of the night.

When Paul signed with the Clippers in the 2025 offseason, Beal — who had worn No. 3 his entire NBA career. It goes back to his high school days, and he voluntarily gave it up so Paul could keep the number that's defined his identity as "CP3" for two decades.

Once Brad heard it's a possibility Chris was coming, he said, 'I want to give him my number,' and I don't even think Chris knows this yet," team president Lawrence Frank said at the time, calling it "such a great gesture." Beal spent that season wearing No. 0 instead.

Beal addressed the situation on social media rather than staying silent as the criticism mounted. He made it clear that his intent isn't to erase Paul's legacy.

"He's a legend!" Beal wrote, adding: "The HISTORY and BRAND can't be touched, nor erased!!!"

The timing adds another layer of difficulty for a Clippers organization. They are already dealing with the fallout of the NBA's historic punishment in the Kawhi Leonard investigation - five stripped first-round picks, a $30 million fine, and suspensions across ownership and front-office leadership.

Against all that, a jersey-number reversal involving a beloved franchise icon has become an unwelcome distraction. Fans are framing it as one more example of a franchise mishandling its relationship with a figure central to its identity, even as Beal's own comments suggest the reversal wasn't intended as any kind of slight.
