Klay Thompson Breaks Silence After Taking $10 Million Pay Cut to Join Miami Heat

After just two seasons with the Dallas Mavericks, Klay Thompson has joined the Miami Heat. On Friday, Thompson agreed to a buyout of his contract, taking a $10 million pay cut from his remaining salary. Just two days later, he signed a two-year deal worth $11.5 million—the lowest contract of his career since his rookie deal from 2011 to 2014.

On Tuesday, Thompson was officially introduced as a member of the Heat at his introductory press conference with head coach Erik Spoelstra. Klay received his jersey and stuck with the number 11. The four-time NBA champion then opened up about his decision to go to South Beach and why he was willing to take less money.

"Just the opportunity to play high-level basketball throughout the season, and a chance to make a deep postseason run, those things were so attractive to me," Thompson said. "Obviously, you want to maximize your earning potential as an athlete, but I've tasted winning before, and there's really nothing like it."

Thompson's arrival in Miami solves the Heat's shooting depth. Despite having star players like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, they aren't necessarily the league's best shooters. They're more known for their aggressiveness inside the paint on both ends of the floor.

With Klay by their side, they also bring championship experience, which will likely prove useful as they aim to contend for the title this coming 2026-27 season.

Former NBA Champion Notes One Problem With Klay Thompson

Despite his performance dropping significantly on the hardwood, Klay Thompson could still be considered a reliable sharpshooter when it matters the most. Throughout his career, Thompson has helped the Golden State Warriors earn four championships as Stephen Curry's shooting tandem.

However, one major ability in Klay's bag of tricks that has noticeably gone missing is his defense. Thompson was the perfect two-way player before his major injury during his tenure with the Warriors. He managed to give guys like Kyrie Irving and LeBron James a run for their money when defending them on the floor.

Former NBA champion Antonio Daniels noted that Thompson's role will be limited in Miami because he's a one-trick pony at this point in his career.

"Let's not act like this is the Golden State Warriors Klay from seven years ago," Daniels said on a Monday airing of SiriusXM NBA Radio. "He's no longer considered a two-way Klay Thompson. That's what made him so valuable in Golden State. It wasn't simply the fact that he could shoot the ball, which was obviously huge. But he could sit down and lock up, too."

"In today's NBA, what you're getting on one end, you may not be getting somewhere else," Daniels added. "You're getting the shooting. 100%. You 100% need the shooting with Giannis, Bam, and some of those guys in Miami; you 100% need it. But you also need someone who's going to defend."

While there is some truth behind Daniels' sentiments, the Heat likely brought in Thompson to fill their shooting problem. Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo can easily cover the defensive end of the court. Andrew Wiggins is also another defensive option.

With that in mind, it's safe to assume that Thompson could blend perfectly with the Heat this coming season. It's a matter of whether he can back it up with the numbers.
