Kevin Durant Sounds Off on Nike After Being Denied of Preferred Project

Kevin Durant's loyalty to Nike has never been in question. Back in 2023, he signed a lifetime contract with the brand, joining only Michael Jordan and LeBron James in that exclusive club, and later that same year he made his allegiance unmistakable when Adidas playfully tried to recruit him after a dispute with Anthony Edwards — Durant fired back on social media that fans would "never see me put a big toe in them."

Three years into that lifetime partnership, Durant is now publicly airing frustration with the same brand he's stayed fiercely devoted to, this time over a project Nike won't let him pursue.

Kevin Durant made his frustration clear in a blunt social media post addressing the situation directly. "Nike told their lifetime athlete that I'm not allowed to make cleats," he wrote, revealing that the company had shut down his attempt to branch into football footwear.

The timing adds extra context to why Durant may have wanted into the football space. He's been expanding his business interests well outside basketball in recent months. He has built out 35 Ventures, his investment and media company, into a vehicle for ventures spanning well beyond the hardwood, making a push into football cleats a logical next step for an athlete clearly looking to grow his footprint across sports rather than stay confined to one.

That's what makes Nike's refusal sting in a way a typical athlete-brand disagreement might not. Lifetime deals, by design, are supposed to give an athlete more creative freedom over the long run, not less. Jordan's arrangement with Nike eventually spun into the standalone Jordan Brand, and LeBron's deal has similarly expanded well past basketball sneakers into a broader lifestyle and apparel ecosystem.

Durant's public comment suggested that he expected a similar level of flexibility once his own lifetime deal was finalized. Instead, he found Nike drawing a hard line around what categories he's allowed to design in.

He's spent nearly two decades as one of Nike's most dependable signature athletes. They've released over 15 shoes in his line and never publicly feuded with the brand the way some of his peers have with their own sponsors.

Even his social media jab at Adidas in 2023 was framed as a show of loyalty, not criticism, making this latest comment a genuine case in his history with the Swoosh.

Whether Nike eventually reverses course and lets Kevin Durant pursue a cleat line remains to be seen. But the public nature of his complaint suggests he's not willing to simply let the decision go unanswered.

For a company that just locked him into a partnership meant to last the rest of his life, managing the moment carefully matters. Especially with Durant increasingly building a business empire that extends well beyond the basketball categories Nike has traditionally confined him to.
