Kawhi Leonard Controversy Takes Another Turn as Latest Report Confirms Another Secret Investment

The personal lives of most NBA stars remain tucked away from the public's eye, but Kawhi Leonard takes that to another level. To many, he is an enigma, with very little known about what he does away from the basketball court.

Despite his attempts to keep that side of his life private, though, he has somehow become embroiled in some off-court controversies. Recently, another secret part of what he does off the court was revealed.

While unrelated to his 'Aspiration' scandal, it was learned that the two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year is an investor in the Rhode Island Football Club.

In a collaborative investigation by the podcast 'Pablo Torre Finds Out' and WPRI's Target 12, it was revealed that Leonard, his uncle Dennis Robertson, and former agent Mitch Fenkel invested in the club.

This was confirmed by Brett Johnson, the founder of the football club, to WPRI. He also shared with them that the trio of Leonard, his uncle, and his former agent were small investors.

The report further stated that several people close to the project were caught off guard upon learning of the NBA forward's involvement.

This includes Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee, who claimed in an interview with Target 12 that he had no idea that Leonard was an investor. Although he did say that Leonard was on his fantasy basketball team.

Interestingly, McKee and Johnson were in Los Angeles together on October 24, 2025, the date of the Clippers' home opener. Not only were they in LA, but they were also inside the team's arena to watch the game.

That night, Leonard dropped 27 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists, securing the team's first win of the season, after losing their first game against the Utah Jazz two days prior.

Why Has the Kawhi Leonard Trade Not Pushed Through?

Earlier this summer, the Los Angeles Clippers and the Toronto Raptors agreed on a deal that would send Kawhi Leonard to Toronto in exchange for Brandon Ingram and Gradey Dick.

However, the deal was put on hold due to investigations into allegations that the Clippers circumvented league rules to pay Leonard more money.

According to the investigations, Leonard signed a $28 million endorsement deal with 'Aspiration'. That particular deal is allegedly a move that would allow the Clippers to pay him more money without it counting against their cap space.

Until the league concludes its investigation and decides on the appropriate action, the trade sending him to the Raptors cannot go through.

This has placed not only Leonard, but also Ingram's and Dick's status in limbo.

In fact, according to a recent update from ESPN's Baxter Holmes, there is a chance this could drag on until 2027.

Meanwhile, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver previously expressed his desire for the investigation to conclude before the 2026-27 season kicks off.

Leonard is coming off his highest scoring season yet, averaging 27.9 points through 65 games in 2025-26.

He had already played for the Raptors after being traded by the San Antonio Spurs in 2018.

He played 60 games for Toronto in 2018-19, putting up 24.8 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 5.2 assists, earning an All-Star nod and finishing the season as a member of the All-NBA first team.

He led the Raptors in the postseason that year, averaging 30.5 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. He helped the franchise win its first and only championship, while also earning his second Finals MVP award.
