Joel Embiid Refuses to Take a Backseat on 76ers Super Team: “Against the Concept”

Joel Embiid has heard the superteam-chemistry warnings before, and history hasn't always been kind to teams that ignored them. Kevin Garnett's run with the Celtics required real sacrifice from established stars to work, and Chris Bosh famously had to reinvent his entire role in Miami's Big Three era just to coexist with LeBron James and Dwyane Wade.

With James now wearing a Sixers jersey, those old lessons are exactly what Embiid pushed back against after Philadelphia's preseason finale.

The Sixers fell 125-120 in overtime to a shorthanded Boston Celtics team missing VJ Edgecombe. It was James and Embiid’s first home game together, and James, Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown all played preseason highs in minutes. James admitted afterward that the team is “still working on our rhythm

Embiid had struggled two games earlier, scoring just six points on 1-for-5 shooting with eight turnovers against Brooklyn. This time he bounced back with 27 points on 7-of-13 shooting, eight rebounds and five assists. Losing to a Celtics team resting its starters didn’t stop him from addressing the central question hanging over his star-studded roster.

"I'm against the concept of sacrificing," Embiid said afterward. “I think the way I explained it was you do what you do best, and we’re going to support you.”

It was a direct rejection of the typical superteam formula, where stars accept reduced roles or diminished touches for the sake of overall fit.

Why Embiid's Stance Carries Real Risk for Philadelphia

The concern with Embiid's take is obvious given who's actually on the roster. Brown, traded to Philadelphia from Boston this summer, averaged a career-high 28.7 points last season as Boston’s clear No. 1 option. Embiid’s “nobody sacrifices” vision doesn’t obviously make room for that role alongside James, Maxey and Embiid himself.

"We're not where we want to be yet," Brown said. "So that's just a part of it. It's a part of coming together, a new group with a bunch of guys, different style, but we just got to keep getting better every day."

Four players who have all operated as a primary option somewhere in their careers will now be tasked with sharing one offense, one shot distribution, and one hierarchy still being sorted out in real time.

Embiid's health adds another layer to the stakes. Given his extensive injury history, there's a reasonable argument that he's the one who should be scaling back usage the most, not insisting everyone else gets to keep doing what they do best.

His comments suggested a belief that talent alone can go around the kind of internal compromise most title teams have needed. A theory the Philadelphia 76ers and their band of superstars will start testing for real once the regular season begins and results, not preseason minutes, are what matter.
